Not all mascaras are created equal in the eyes of everyone. For me, not much has been able to come close to IT Cosmetics Superhero, let alone top it. When I read the claims of the new Urban Decay Lash Freak Mascara, I definitely thought I was about to achieve my mascara nirvana.

Urban Decay Lash Freak Mascara is described by the brand as “intensely volumizing mascara with an asymmetrical brush that lengthens and lifts lashes for a dramatic, wide-eyed look.”
In addition, and this part is important to remember, “the brush was designed to give extreme volume and definition to lashes. The tip defines and separates, while the curved side adds lift. The mascara’s long-wear formula lasts up to 20 hours and is both smudge- and sweat-proof.”
The first time I wore Urban Decay Lash Freak Mascara I was sold. It was my new favorite, no one could touch it, best mascara ever. One coat was all that I needed to make my entire day and the little ball on the end was small enough to get at every lash – even at the inner and outer corners of the eye.
Below is a pic where I have no mascara on the left eye and one-coat of Urban Decay Lash Freak Mascara on the right eye (no eyelash curler or primer used). I tend to have lashes that criss-cross no matter what but during the first few wears of this mascara that didn’t happen. Plus, my lashes were lengthened and lifted so nicely! Bonus – it lasted all day without flaking.
After another week or so of wear I started to notice that it was clumping horribly, I believe due to the fact that the product was collecting so much on both sides of the wand. The bristle side begins to collect product more and more with each use. I’m not sure if this is because the little spikes don’t have a deep enough space in between, but it causes the product to really goop up in there. All of the goop then deposits on your lashes instead of combing nicely through them. The other side of the wand is completely barren but still somehow collects product which, again, manages to deposit and goop on your lashes. Bottom line: when using UD Lash Freak alone, you’ll have to use a clean spoolie brush to really comb through them thoroughly.
As I got more frustrated with how time-consuming it was to make this mascara look good I decided to try layering it. I am SO GLAD I did!
Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara has always been a favorite of mine. It thickens my lashes and adds a great curl. Using one coat of Urban Decay Lash Freak and one coat of Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes allows me to achieve my own personal mascara nirvana. This tag-team is truly giving me everything I want in a mascara and more. The lift, length, and curl still lasts all day without the flaking and without product migrating down my face – and you wouldn’t believe how much I sweat at work running around wearing a mask for 8 hours.
