The best way to keep your blonde hair from turning brassy isn’t just purple shampoo (though this one is my current fave). You really have to find a good hair stylist in your area.
I’m lucky enough to live in near the city of Pittsburgh, PA where Copacetic Beauty Lounge is home to a talented group of women that are truly the best at what they do.
You might wonder how I even stumbled on a hair salon that is over 30 minutes away from my home. YEARS ago I had a major problem.
I’d been going to the same local stylist for a decade (I’m nothing if not loyal) and a few days before our appointment she had to cancel on me. I loathe change and don’t trust just anyone with my hair. I know it’s just hair and it’ll grow back, everything is fixable… blah blah blah.
Thankfully I knew a few makeup artists in the Pittsburgh area and I sent the one with the most beautiful head of hair an SOS on Facebook messenger. Danielle Mock always looks on point, she is one of the most talented makeup artists probably in the world and she’s also an actress – of course she’s going to know the best in hair.

Copacetic Beauty Lounge in Pittsburgh, PA – hair salon/stylist review + the place you NEED to go for blonde highlights!
In my SOS I stated I needed someone who did awesome blonde highlights and could fit me in for an appointment within the next two days. She immediately replied back with “Copacetic Beauty Lounge in the North Hills – anyone that works there will do a fabulous job”. I called in, told them what I needed and when I needed it. They said Allyson is fabulous and she can see you Friday. Perfect.
Allyson and I hit it off immediately. The entire experience was like sitting there chatting with someone I’d been close friends with forever. The entire environment of the salon is classy, fun and flirty. You relax and hang out, sometimes even chatting with others sitting by you that are also getting their hair done. It sounds weird but nowhere else are people that nice. Ever.
In the 2+ years that I’ve been going to Copacetic Beauty Lounge I’ve learned some things about my hair. My hair pulls majorly warm toned. I never knew that.
Because of the heavy warm tones the strands turn brassy within a few days regardless of toner or shampoo. It can only be helped to a certain point. After a few visits Allyson concocted the perfect mixture to keep my hair at the beige-ashy blonde level that I had been craving. As time went on I was able to go more and more blonde and…
I’ve never been happier with my hair.
I’ve also learned it’s important to use the right products. The salon introduced me to Wella Brilliance Shampoo & Conditioner and I’ve also been using that off and on (mostly on) since.
As far as purple shampoos/conditioners go they recommended several. I tried out Pravana The Perfect Blonde first and while I liked it I wasn’t wowed by it. This time around I decided to try another recommendation, Joico Color Balance, and am much happier using that. It’s not only better performing (IMO) but it’s less expensive. I am to use this once a week and have found that it really helps maintain my color.
Styling-wise I’ve long been a fan of Peter Coppola . Since I had bought the Joico Color Balance and they were Buy 2 Get 1 Free at ULTA Beauty I decided to try out the Joico K-PAK Smoothing Balm. It’s the most AMAZING styling product of life. If you have frizzy hair and want it to look sleek but not oily, YOU NEED IT.
Since the time of my SOS (looking back on messenger it was in September of 2016!) I’ve continued to go to Allyson for all hair cuts and color.
If for some reason Allyson had to cancel I’d trust ANY of the girls out there to do my color. The right stylist makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE in keeping your hair from looking or becoming brassy. Make sure you go off of recommendations and get someone that knows what they’re doing.
