UPDATE: The End of the Makeup & Beauty No-Buy

June 23, 2020

My makeup & beauty no-buy ended on April Fool’s Day of this year (see my no-buy one month update here!). I’d say that even without the no-buy being in effect all of 2020 has been a wild ride. Talk about a stressful time to try to stop leaning on your crutch cold turkey! When I began this no-buy I thought that April 1st would be a day I lost my mind a little and spent some money on some makeup. Now, here we are well past April 1st and I still have little desire to buy anything beauty related.

In these last few months, ALL of our worlds have upended. It doesn’t matter if you live alone, if you have a large family, if you’re wealthy, low-income, living in the US or in Europe…. all of our lives have changed. They’ve changed forever whether we like it or not.

Fenty Beauty Snap Shadow in 7 Cadet + UPDATE on my makeup & beauty 3-month NO-BUY!

This wasn’t something I formally announced but in early-mid March I started a new job as a Target Beauty Consultant. I applied for this job in February and also interviewed in February. A few days later I was hired and about 2 weeks after that I had my orientation. Of course, I realized that, realistically, being around so many beauty items could be a realllllyyyy bad idea… but none-the-less I was excited.

I’m just past the three-month mark and I still love my job. I truly feel like this is where I’m meant to be. It’s been incredibly busy but enjoyable. I have fantastic co-workers and the management team is the best I’ve ever encountered (and I’ve worked A LOT of retail).

In addition to my hours at Target, I was also homeschooling both of my kids (they just finished up 7th and 5th grades). My husband is doing what he can to help as well, but he’s also working from home. We’re fortunate that his job is also essential and within the medical field but requires a more technical approach. He’s currently holed up in the basement in a makeshift office. Now we’ve just received word the kids’ school has closed and we had to scramble to look for a tour a new one.

Due to all of this by the end of the day, I’m exhausted and my blog plus my socials (other than my Twitter lol) have basically fallen dead silent. Since homeschool is over and we’ve finally found another school, I’ll have some extra time again and I plan to update this blog 2-3 times a week. If you have any requests for things you want to see, let me know in the comments!

Beauty Products I HAULED?! During My 3-Month Makeup No-Buy

Now, as for closing out this no-buy…

In month 2 I did make one small purchase of 3 items from Fenty Beauty - Snap Shadow in 7 Cadet, Gloss Bomb in $weet Mouth, and Pro Filt’r Mini Setting Powder in Banana. Lately, with the bulk of my purchases, I haven’t been impressed with many of them. This probably helped more than anything with my lack of purchasing much throughout April and now May. My heart isn’t in buying new beauty anymore. It’s like the pictures and swatches get you so excited and lately it’s been nothing but a major let down when it arrives. (editors note: it’s now June and I did make some purchases, but that is for another post!)

Of the above mentioned I really only liked the Gloss Bomb. I didn’t like the Snap Shadow at all. The matte shades were dry and hard to blend. Once I worked through the top layer they were a little better but I’ve come to expect more from a brand like Fenty.

The setting powder was okay, but nothing special. I’d originally thought I just got the wrong color (and I did) so on my next beauty buy I purchased a lighter shade from Sephora (on April 21, during the sale). Still not impressed. It’s not terrible, just not great. During that sale, I also purchased a mini size of the Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist and LANEIGE Lip Glowy Balm in Berry. Both of those are just okay. The mist has a weird scent so I’ll stick to the masks. The lip balm is good, but since I started working at Target I’ve fallen in love with the very inexpensive Aquaphor Lip Balm.

Other than that, the only other beauty products I’ve purchased were on April 23 and that was the Tatcha Liquid Silk Canvas (which I do like, but I like the regular Tatcha Silk Canvas better) and a beautyblender Cleansing Soap (because I was out of mine).

For me, this is monumental. My no-buy is over and I’ve purchased very little. AND I work in the beauty department of a large retail chain.

Fenty Beauty Snap Shadow in 7 Cadet + UPDATE on my makeup & beauty 3-month NO-BUY!

I’ve been working on this post for months. Changing things around, editing things out, rewording… It’s just so funny to me how a simple 3-month no-buy changed my outlook on buying makeup. This past month (we’re in June now! Ahhhh!) I did splurge some, but I made sure the purchases were thoughtful and I left them in my cart(s) for a while before I placed the order.

I’ll absolutely do another no-buy but it’ll likely be a low-buy because I think it’s important to be able to grab your necessities without feeling guilty that you’re breaking some sort of self-imposed rule.
