Never did I ever think that I’d be the parent that got my kids an iPhone before they were 16. Here we are, at 12 and 14, and they’ve had their iPhones for years. How did my husband and I come to the decision to let them have iPhones? In a nutshell, it’s easier. By easier I don’t mean in ways of distraction, I mean easier in terms of safety. In this day-and-age, safety is of the utmost importance.
Gone are the days of using a payphone (raise your hand if you were one of those 1-800-COLLECT kids that said “MomImReadyPickMeUp” instead of saying your name) to keep in touch with one another. Kids and parents are busier than ever and not having a phone just doesn’t cut it. Once our kids started sports that became apparent.
When the kids were super little, it was okay that they didn’t have a phone. But around 8 or 9, when All-Star sports start kicking up with a ton of practices and games… they really needed a phone. We really needed them to have a phone.
Practice ended early? No big deal, they can call you to come get them. They want to run into McDonald’s after school with friends? No big deal, they can call you to ask. Trouble on the way walking home from school or an injury? No big deal, they can call you or 911.
We opted to get each of the kids an iPhone for several reasons. Mainly because we’ve always been iPhone users and it’s what we’re comfortable with. The features are easy to use and we know how to restrict and enable things easily. There are also apps you can put on them to track locations, which was a LIFESAVER when our daughter accidentally left her phone in the book section of Target.
We use Verizon Wireless for our service because, again, it’s what my husband and I have always used. I’m turning 41 this year and I’ve been a Verizon Wireless customer since I was 17 (my sorority sister actually co-signed for me on my first phone because I was still underage when I started college lol) and have never once left my service. I’ve been a loyal customer for 24 years. When working, traveling, and even driving around mountainous areas of Pennsylvania, the coverage can’t be beat.
In addition to all of that, the iPhone deals are incredible. When we got the kids their first phones we sprung on a deal and right now you can too!
Just in time for Back-to-School, Verizon Wireless has a buy one phone get one FREE offer! (ends 8/10/2021)

Of course my kids (and, hey, even myself) would LOVE to have an iPhone 12. Who doesn’t love an upgrade?! Just look at it! That purple is *chef’s kiss*.
We have rules surrounding the phones and it’s taught them responsibility. They’re accountable for their phones and what is on them. There are rules that they’re expected to follow with no exceptions. Keep in mind, learning what rules work for your household will be a continuing learning experience for everyone. For example, my kids learned they could block each other (I mean… lol… but no, it’s not safe to block your sister/brother). Set the rules, make sure they understand them, and you’ll be amazed at how they’ll adapt and especially at how well they’ll do!

When I and my wife were taking care of our nephew here, we noticed a huge pattern of him being sleepy and tired at online school (we have it online here because of pandemic) and the culprit is the phone and internet. We got him to sleep earlier by surrendering his phone to us during weekday nights.
