Back in my high school/college days there was no one artist on this Earth that I idolized more than Aaliyah Haughton.
Best known for songs like Try Again (my personal favorite), Are You That Somebody, Rock the Boat, If Your Girl Only Knew and One in a Million Aaliyah spent her way too short singing and acting career working with the likes of Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Jet Li and more. When Aaliyah passed in 2001 it was shocking and, even though I didn’t personally know her, absolutely sad.
When rumors began circulating of a collaboration coming with MAC I knew I’d need it in my life, and I plan to pick some it up. For now I’m excited to share with you a couple of the pieces that were sent to me as well as some more info on the makeup collection in it’s entirety.
what is it
The MAC x Aaliyah Makeup Collection is a 12 piece line consisting of 4 Lipsticks, 4 Lipglasses, 2 Lip Pencils, a Bronzing Powder and an Eyeshadow Palette.
This line was done in collaboration with Aaliyah’s estate. I imagine interest was gauged by the petition started 3+ years ago for MAC to collab with the icon, particularly after her brother Rashad stated that Aaliyah was a huge fan of MAC products.
Now for Summer 2018 we have what we’ve all been wishing for!
Lipstick ($18.50). Four Lipstick shades are released in Street Thing, Try Again, Hot Like… and More Than a Woman. Street Thing is the one I received and it is described as a pure black frost with shimmer.
Street Thing is semi-sheer with a good bit of sparkle throughout (which isn’t as noticeable in the swatch pic below as it is in my Instagram highlights so I added in that pic also). It didn’t apply evenly but it’s not uncomfortable to wear and I love how it layers with the coordinating Lipglass and Lip Pencil also shown in this post.
Lipglass ($17.50). Four Lipglass shades are released in 1 in a Million, Brooklyn Born, At Your Best You Are and Li Li’s Motor City. 1 in a Million is described as a deep rich purple.
1 in a Million is semi-opaque but applies evenly. For me I find the MAC Lipglass formula to always be comfortable though some people don’t like the slight sticky feel that they’ve always carried.
Lip Pencil ($18.00). Two Lip Pencils are released in Nevermore and Follow Your Heart. Nevermore is described as pure black.
Nevermore feels a little dry so it doesn’t apply very smoothly, though it had excellent staying power on me. Obviously since this is a lip pencil and it’s likely you’re using it as a base for your lip color you don’t have to worry about any sort of patchiness as you fill it in but it is worth noting just in case you do like to wear them on their own.
Overall it’s clear I’m excited for the collection. When it releases I plan on picking up Age Ain’t Nothing Eyeshadow Palette, Try Again Lipstick and Li Li’s Motor City Lipglass. I’m thinking maybe Brooklyn Born Lipglass also because my nickname is Brooklyn and I can never resist a sheer nude lip gloss!
What will you be grabbing?
The MAC x Aaliyah Collection swatches below are done dry and on bare skin (no primers):
This was the photo I posted to my Instagram stories which shows off a bit more of the multi-dimensional shimmer of the lip products.
MAC x Aaliyah will be available online beginning June 20, 2018 and in select stores on June 21, 2018. This entire collection is listed as limited edition.
