Fashion trends are so fleeting. When I was younger I didn’t mind picking up a new purse every season. As I got older I’d stare at the piles of unused bags from trendy seasons past and got sick. I really blew a ton of money every single season on the hottest handbag in the coolest print then tossed it aside after a month or two.
As I purged these bags I decided to get smart. I could still have nice handbags but they should be functional and they should work year-round and with multiple outfits. The purses should be high-quality, durable, sized for my needs and not too heavy (because I plan to load them up with stuff).
Here are some of my favorite bag styles, all of which are high-quality and will stand the test of time. During this sale time at Macy’s they’re ALL under $200. Once the sale ends they’ll likely go up to their full price but still watch for sales and coupon codes you can use to get a savings discount. I would imagine that throughout the season we’ll be seeing more of them. Also I’m a bit of a brand snob so apologies in advance for that ?.

When shopping this way I’ve found that it’s important to (1) stay away from “signature” type bags where it’s all canvas and logo – some are okay like this one. (2) Stick to well-made, strong materials. You’ll be able to tell the minute you touch a bag, regardless of the material, if it’s flimsy. (3) Steer clear of most prints (like floral, for example, which only seems to shine in the Spring/Summer. Something like this is ok because it’s not colorful) and (4) if you’re looking to buy a white bag make sure it’s a year-round muted white like this one rather than a bright, summery white. (5) Color is okay but if you go too bright you’re looking at more seasonal style restrictions. When it comes to choosing any year-round hue, muted tones are best.
You will always be tempted with the trends, collabs and the latest, greatest thing. When I was looking for my picks for this post I saw a Coach x Wizard of Oz collab that almost made me throw every one of my rules out the window. Be strong.
I’ll leave you with this. When you decide you need/want a new handbag – think before you shop. What will I wear this with? When will I wear this? Will I still be able to use this in a year? In 5 years? In 10 years? Is this on sale? (because trust, it will be eventually)
What is your favorite handbag to use all year, year-round?
