The theme for the August 2019 Boxycharm is Totally Boxycharm. It definitely gives off that pink, totally awesome Barbie vibe! Let’s see what is inside.
what is boxycharm
Boxycharm is a monthly beauty subscription box filled with 5-6 luxury items, 4 of which will always be full-sized. The monthly cost of Boxycharm is $21 but if you subscribe for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months you’ll receive a slight discount on the monthly boxes (down to $19.25). Renewals are automatic but you can cancel at any time.
Each Boxycharm box has a minimum value of $100 and you’ll receive anything from makeup to skincare to beauty tools. With some products shades can vary though with other products all boxes will have them included.
To find out how to best use the products received in the monthly box you can check out tutorials and looks shared by the “Charmer” community on social media.
Members are treated to exclusive offers from the best brands in beauty. You’ll also be eligible to win free products through giveaways and receive reward points which are redeemable in the Boxycharm Charm Shop.
what’s inside
BECCA Hydra-Mist Set & Refresh Powder ($39.00). I received the shade Original (sheer, creamy beige). This powder is said to be ultra-translucent and weightless powder that sets and refreshes makeup for a silky smooth, invisible finish.
TBH I like how this works but I’d never purchase it. It’s half full in the jar and you’re only getting 10g of product for $39 vs. something like the new Anastasia Beverly Hills Loose Setting Powder which is only $36 for 25g of product. That is a HUGE difference + the ABH works incredibly well for me. Also when you take the sticker off of the BECCA powder explodes everywhere and you’re losing a ton. This product is just way too expensive and that’s coming from ME who doesn’t mind the price if I love something.
Everyone will receive this item in either Original or Golden Bronze.
Wander Beauty Glow Ahead Illuminating Oil ($42.00). This “multitasking beauty elixir” is said to “instantly hydrate and absorb into the skin revealing a bouncy, youthful complexion no matter what skin type you have”.
While this doesn’t contain alcohol or synthetic fragrance I’m still very wary of putting any oils on my skin. I have a couple that I like but I’m so breakout prone I rarely try anything new in this regard. Unfortunately this is the priciest item in this box and one that I won’t be able to get any use out of.
Everyone will receive this item.
Tarte Big Ego Mascara ($23.00). An ultra-black, vegan mascara that lifts your lashes and is said to deliver “fully-loaded flutter for up to 16 hours”.
I was pleasantly surprised with the way that Big Ego thickened and gave a nice, slight curl to my lashes that lasted all day. I also didn’t have any issues with flaking (even on my lower lash line). I’m not sure it would take of the place of my current fave Tarte mascara (Lights, Camera, Lashes) but it’s super close!
You will receive this item or Peach & Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum.
PUR x Barbie Glitterally Pink Brightening Peel-Off Mask ($26.00). Created to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Barbie (YAY!) this mask has “licorice extract, skin-nourishing green tea, vitamin B, ginseng and 26 key botanicals to help brighten the skin’s appearance without unwanted irritation for a visibly renewed complexion.” The glitter formula is said to be non-plastic.
There has been more skincare type items than I care to deal with in this month’s box. Which I can allow, I guess, since it’s rare that it happens (which is a major reason why I love Boxycharm).
In the case of the PUR x Barbie Glitter Mask… there is alcohol in this. I’m talking like the third ingredient is straight up alcohol and the second ingredient is polyvinyl alcohol (which is common in peel-off masks) but can cause skin irritation. If not for straight alcohol being the third ingredient I might give it a try, but no way, no day. I’ll break out like the champ of all zits. Unfortunately this is another item in this months box I won’t be getting any use out of.
Everyone will receive this item or Ace Beaute Glimmer Shadow Duo in Set 1 or Set 2.
Lashaholics Instaglam False Eyelashes ($14.99). These lashes are 100% vegan made from premium silk fibers to give your lashes dimension, natural-looking length and volume. The website states they’ll work for all eye shapes especially almond, wide-set and hooded.
Soooo… I really don’t use false lashes. I’ve never heard of this brand but the lashes themselves feel nice and they’re dramatic looking without being too ridiculous. If I ever did need to throw a pair on I would try them out. It’s a lower value item in this months box but again, one I won’t get use out of.
Everyone will receive this item or a Steve Laurent Lip Liner (shades will vary).
final thoughts
Was the box worth the money? For me? Meh…. this is the first month I’m going to say not really. The value was there, for sure. I think that the products included would have excited someone, but a lot of them just aren’t for me. This is one of those. times I wish Boxycharm would let us opt out of certain things such as skincare (or at least skincare with alcohol in it) and false eyelashes.
What is always interesting to me about Boxycharm is that there are always products included that I’d never think to buy myself but I always end up discovering I love at least one of them. In this particular box I was excited to try out the Tarte Big Ego Mascara. I’d been looking to purchase this myself so that helps offset the price of not liking the rest of the box, being that the Tarte mascara retails for $23 on it’s own. I also like the Becca powder, but the fact that it only looks half-full is bizarre to me and I’d have been really upset to pay retail in the store for that. IMO it’s way overpriced in comparison to others on the market.
Overall, though, I’m still loving that this box continues to contain products from highly trending brands as well as products I’ll get use out of.
You can sign up for Boxycharm here. HURRY, space is limited month-to-month. (Please note, there is a chance you won’t get the same box as me each month, as most of the products are variation items & there is also a chance you’ll get the next month’s box instead).
To my knowledge all of the products listed above are FULL SIZE (except if noted otherwise).
For reference – my box is VERSION 9.
The retail value of the entire August 2019 Boxycharm? $144.99! This boxes’ retail value is higher than last month’s box, and obviously that retail value is well worth the $21 investment.
