Never in a million years would I have ever thought that I’d look good in a metallic lip color. Sure I’ve loved me some sheer-ish metallic shades in the past, mostly in gloss form, but never did I ever think I’d fall in love with a matte metallic lip color. But I have fallen in love, with two shades in fact, from the MAC Retro Matte Metallic Liquid Lipcolour line.
what is it
The MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour Metallics are a twist on the classic Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour. The full collection has 15 shades available, 12 of which are part of the original launch while 3 are completely new to the line. All of the shades are said to provide “a jolt of pure matte metallic colour in a liquid-suede finish that lasts and lasts”.
15 shades are available in Softly Rockin’ (soft pinky beige), Pearl Punk (dusty pink), Metrochrome (gold bronze), Foiled (rose bronze), Coral Plated (orange), Crowned (blackened purple), Buzzed Out (fuchsia pink), In Retrograde (yellow red), Love Weapon (deep blue red), Atomized (violet), Moon Landing (blue), Silver Spoon (gunmetal), Quartzette (beige), Gemz & Roses (bronze rose) and Metallic Rose (r0se gold).
The four shades I’ll be sharing with you today are Gemz & Roses, Coral Plated, Crowned and Silver Spoon.
review
The packaging on the MAC Retro Matte Metallics is the same as the original Retro Matte. The applicator is also the same – tapered, slanted and sponge-y with a little well in the middle to hold product. One dip gave me more than enough product to completely cover my lips.
The coverage on the four shades that I tried range from perfect in one swipe to in need of some touching up. Gemz & Roses and Crowned are perfection. Completely opaque right off the bat and of the four colors I received they’re obviously the most wearable for me. Coral Plated almost looked perfect but upon a closer inspection I noticed it did need another, light layer to be 100% opaque. Silver Spoon is semi-opaque on the first application however some spots were slightly patchy. That being said its easy to touch up in spots that need it to make it completely opaque.
As for wear time I’m ridiculously impressed. I applied Gemz & Roses, let it set for maybe 5 minutes while I took some pics and then went in on a sandwich. There was absolutely no color transfer to the bread or my tumbler straw. After I ate I looked in the mirror and the lip color appeared completely untouched. While this formula does feel slightly drying to me I’m incredibly impressed in pigment, performance and longevity. I tested the other three shades through meals and had the same experience on wear time.

The four shades that I received are swatched below on dry skin with no primers.
availability
The MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour Metallics retail for $21.00 each ($25.00 CAD) and are currently available at ULTA Beauty, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdales and maccosmetics.com. It seems as though all but 3 shades have the “limited edition triangle of death” over on the MAC website so if you’re wanting to grab a couple colors I wouldn’t wait.

It’s just Gemz & Roses – no base and no liner. I use the tip to help line and then fill in the color with the flat part. HTH!
