When it comes to beauty products the product names and packaging are what grab my attention first. Pretty Vulgar Cosmetics has both of those down in spades.
what is it
Pretty Vulgar Cosmetics is a cruelty-free makeup line whose products feature a vintage aesthetic and tout sassy names. The line is said to be created by “a collective flock of cosmetics industry veterans, innovators and makeup artists who wanted to create a brand that embodies the fact that people are beautiful multifaceted contradictions”. Mysterious and intriguing!
review
Secret Weapon Poisonous Pout Plumping Lipgloss ($22.00). Secret Weapon is described as a soft pink.
This one was a no-brainer necessity after watching Casey Holmes rave about it on her YouTube video. The applicator is a flat sponge with a rounded tip. The formula isn’t very thick so it feels light on the lips and the color itself is semi-sheer.
Generally, when I purchase a lip gloss that is “plumping” I can’t expect at least a bit of a tingly, stinging sensation. With Poisonous Pout the sensation is very cooling but still gives the impression of fuller lips. There is a flicker of a tingle after maybe 5 minutes of wear, but it’s hardly noticeable. I think I really only noticed it because I was waiting for it. Those that want a full lip look but can’t stand the “pain” of other plumping glosses will love this! It’s a bit sticky, but I don’t find it to be overly so and it’s not bothersome to me at all.
Wear time was normal for me, around 2-3 hours without eating or drinking a lot.
Prissy Ballerina Liquor Nail Polish ($20.00). Ohhhhh you pricey, pricey work of art…. Prissy Ballerina is a cream nail polish that is described as a pale pink. I almost didn’t buy it because of that price tag… $20 is in the mid-to-high range when you remember that a Chanel Nail Lacquer is $28 and Dior is $27.
I’m mostly obsessed with the packaging on this, and that’s what clinched it for me. I love the brush too. The formula itself is a little thick and doesn’t exactly glide on the nail. This particular shade took three coats to get it to be fully even, which was a shame because I think it would’ve been opaque in two coats otherwise. That being said this type of color is always a PITA for me so I’m open to trying other shades… because I love the brush and bottle… packaging gets me every time.
The Wing Master Eyeliner Brush ($20.00). I bought this because my HG Urban Decay slanted eyeliner brush was discontinued (which I found out only when I did my favorite makeup brushes post) and I’m in the market for a new one. What makes this intriguing to me, though, is that it’s double-sided. So one end you have the slant and on the other end you have a point to make a smaller line or be more precise – which normally I use a separate liner brush from Bobbi Brown for. It’s my two faves in one! Overall I was impressed with the performance and quality of this brush… I’d totally buy another!
final thoughts
There aren’t a ton of products available (currently 25 in total) but the brand did an excellent job of making sure the basics were covered and that there is a decent color selection. There isn’t anything I noticed product-wise that was stand-out different than any other brand BUT that packaging is more than enough to make up for it. From what I’ve tried and other reviews I’ve seen the products appear to perform well overall and are wearable. If you’re not opposed to the price tag it’s worth picking up a few items, even if it’s just to be a collector of pretty things.
Up next on my shopping list? Definitely another nail polish, I’m thinking Tickle my Fancy or Frisky Whiskey. I also want to pick up more products to maybe do an entire look with – the mascara, a blush, bronzer… definitely Nightingale Eyeshadow Palette. I almost bought that palette but I have so many similar shades right now I backed off. DEFINITELY want more of the plumping lipglosses… Could this be my shopping list for the next Sephora Sale? You never know!
