If you look left you see metallic lips. If you look right you see holo, sparkle or duochrome topcoats for lips. I’ll never shy away from that nude lip trend, but I’d be lying if I said this whole molten metal deal doesn’t have me intrigued. Recently Kevyn Aucoin released Molten Lip Color shades in Molten Metals ($30.00 // Sephora) and Top Coats ($30.00 // Sephora). I dove in.
what is it
Kevyn Aucoin Molten Lip Color is available in 6 shades – one has a high shine finish while the other five have a metallic finish. Because I rarely wear a metallic lip but am obsessed with Rose Gold I bought just one shade… obviously Rose Gold, which has a metallic finish. These are said to be “high-impact, metallic liquid lip colors in highly pigmented shades”.
I was impressed with how smoothly Rose Gold applied. It was also very even and pigmented in one coat (though by one coat I mean one coat on the bottom lip, dip again and one coat on the top lip). What struck me as odd is how wearable this color is. When you think of a metal lip shade wearable is definitely not the first thing to come to mind. But this is a shade I would feel comfortable with wearing out even in the day time. The feel of the Lip Color is comfortable and IMO a 2 out of 10 on the sticky scale. The end look is a metallic gloss and wear time was around 3 hours for me if I didn’t eat or drink.
Kevyn Aucoin Molten Lip Color Top Coat is available in 2 shades – Cyber Opal and Cyber Sky. Of course I got them both because how could you pick a favorite child? These are described as being “high-impact, metallic liquid lip color in two sheer top coats”.
These top coats are SO COOL to play around with. The Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colours came in the other day and I’ve been playing around with combos… my favorite has to be Stone (a matte grey) with Cyber Sky on top. It is the COOLEST outer-space type effect! Is it wearable? God, no…. but it’s FUN and TBH you could totally pull it off with a little confidence and a night out.
The top coats both apply evenly and nicely, Cyber Opal is beautiful even on it’s own and is much more wearable than Cyber Sky. I found them to be comfortable to wear though they’re stickier than the Metallic… I’d say a 4 out of 10 on that stick scale. Wear time was the same, 3 hours if I’m not eating or drinking, however note that they’ll last a little longer when worn on top of an all day liquid lip color (which is nice).

final thoughts
I was impressed with all three of these Molten Lip Colors for different reasons. First off, across the board, the applicator is a thing of dreams. It’s perfectly shaped for precise application whether you’re going at your full lip or at the line. They were much more comfortable to wear than I imagined and also in the case of Rose Gold and Cyber Opal more wearable.
The Kevyn Aucoin Molten Liquid Lip Color shades are available at Sephora, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus.
