My lids are hooded like they’re about to rob banks and my eyes don’t want anyone to notice who they are. Like, it’s BAD. I’ve always had the worst time trying to get that winged liner look that everyone craves. My wings were always too skinny, too small or completely wrong. Then I came across this old YouTube video from Jaclyn Hill on how to apply winged liner (it’s around the 9 minute mark). She gives this tip to start the wing at the bottom of the lower lash line and go up. I was inspired.

EASY Winged eye liner tutorial for hooded eyes
Tutorial
My eyes are a bit more hooded, so I had to play around and adjust, but it was that video that got me doing a decent wing. Here is what I do:
- I do my eye makeup first – before any face makeup even. (easier clean up later if you need to sharpen that wing)
- Begin drawing the wing by starting below the bottom of the lower lash line. Just a hair under where Jaclyn showed in her video. Extend it out as far as you like but remember you’ll probably add some more length in later. (pic 1)
- Draw a line from the tip of the wing down to your upper lash line. I start the line just below the point and I don’t make it too thick at first, but also not too thin.
- Color in the triangle and draw a thin line at the upper lash line (again, you can thicken this up later as desired – I usually do).
- How thick do you want it? I generally go a bit thicker on the upper lash line and the wing. To do this I start about mid-way down the triangle and draw a thin line to the center of the lid.

There you have it! My wing! My eye lids are not twins by any means so I always have to play around with the thickness of the liner to get them to look even while I have my eyes open. You may also have to play around a bit to get your perfect sizing but hopefully this small tutorial will help you out a bit!

How to get the perfect winged eyeliner look with hooded eyelids
I use a few products to get that perfect wing and I’ve come across a few makeup products and brushes that have made things a lot easier for me:
- Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. This is my favorite in terms of a liquid eyeliner. It’s pigmented and fluid. I tend toward the brown shade because I always feel like black looks harsh on me. The brown is also deep enough that it doesn’t look noticeably brown but it’s definitely not black.
- MAC Fluidline. I find these are the easiest to use for me and they don’t dry out quickly. Because I’m not a fan of straight black colors for liner my fave in the permanent line is Lowlights.
- Bobbi Brown Ultra Precise Eyeliner Brush. I love this for the details, like a sharper point or evening out my lines.
- Urban Decay Perversion Angled Brush. This just gives me the perfect shape and makes it easy to get a smooth line. Unfortunately I found out while doing my Most Repurchased Makeup Brushes post that this doesn’t exist anymore, but I hope that this brush is just as good – yes, I’ve ordered it lol.
Products Used in This Look
The eyeshadow used in this post is actually the OFRA Cosmetics x NikkieTutorials Everglow Highlighter shades, the mascara is L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara, the top liner is Kat Von D Mad Max Brown Tattoo Liner and the bottom waterline is Clinique Slim Sable Skinny Stick.
For my brows I used Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof #3 and Gimme Brow #3. My brows are also microbladed (post coming) but I use these products to perfect a bit more.

How do you wing? Let me know in the comments and don’t forget to also tell us your eye shape!
never put shimmer in the crease!
Wow!! Amazing. I will try those products out.
Yass, girl preach! Your eyeliner look is on point! I have hooded eyes, too, and it always pains me to see that I pretty much have no lid space when my eyes are open. That’s one of the reasons I do very simple eye makeup – it’s all gonna be hidden anyway, so for me it’s all about the liner.
Thank you! I’ve seen you with a wing, though, and you do it up flawlessly! You always look fab. If I had your skin I’d probably never even bother with anything more than some blush and mascara. Though, I’d probably still collect all the rest because it’s so pretty lmao
Your winged liner is on fleek! Unfortunately, just the last few years my lids have started sagging and I have a lot of trouble getting a nice wing. My daughter wears it everyday.

Thank you!!! Gravity is an evil thing. I just said to Marcia how nervous I am to go under the knife especially messing with the eye area but I might not be opposed to an eye lift in a few years lol Who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky and winged liner won’t be a “thing” then!
Your eyeshadow shades are fabulous. I want!!! You did an amazing job with your eyes and wing. My eyes are droopy so I never seem to get a wing looking right.

Thank you!! The copper in that highlighter was so pretty I had to get it on my eyeballs! I feel like my eyes are drooping more as I age and as much as I hate to mess with eyes I’m over here not even opposed to an eye lift in like 10 years lol if gravity keeps kicking my butt, anyway!
I have very hooded eyes as well and it is an art applying liner lol!!!
I look back at when I started and I was like WHAT THE EFF WAS MY LIFE.
Perfect! I love seeing how people do their wings!

Life with hooded eyes can be a challenge, lol. Mine are doing all sorts of strange and not so wonderful things now I’m getting older (46years). Thank you for the post I’m gonna try it out soon!
I feel like mine droop more every year too =( stupid gravity.
My eyes are downturned & somewhat hooded now that I’m older. I’ve tried this method & I have to try it again. Love your bronze eye look and your wing is perfect!

Thank you! Winged liner is a PITA until you get the right technique. I know mine will just keep getting more and more hooded as I age =(
