MAC calls their latest eye liner release a “one-stroke wonder”. An “easy-glide formula” that has a “silky, soft texture perfect for rimming the sensitive waterline”. Waterline, you guys. You know I love me some waterlining. If you also love to waterline then you also know it’s next to impossible to find a liner that will stay on your waterline for more than 2 minutes. I have some hits, but I have even more misses. Let’s see where the MAC Modern Twist Kajal Liner ($17.00 // Nordstrom) falls.
In addition to all of the claims mentioned above this twist-up liner is also touted to be transfer-resistant, waterproof, smudge-resistant, long-wearing (they claim 10 hours), high-coverage and, most importantly for me, ophthalmologist tested and safe for contact lens wearers. I wear contacts and my eyes are extremely sensitive to eyeliners, let alone ones that I waterline with. I also have allergies, so that coupled with the contacts and sensitivity makes for watery eyes. Making me a very hard customer to please when it comes to eyeliner.
Upon application of Nothing On (which has a matte finish) I was impressed with the color and how easily it applied to the waterline. I checked on it 15 minutes later and it had significantly faded. After an hour had passed it was all but gone. I tried Groundbreaker (which has a shimmer) next and it didn’t even apply to my waterline. It applied well and lasted on my upper lid and below the lower lash line, but I couldn’t get it to actually adhere to the waterline at all. I have better luck with the regular MAC Eye Kohl (Teddy has been a long-time favorite of mine). While those don’t last more than an hour or two it’s much longer than the Modern Twist Kajal Liners.
As stunning as these shades are I don’t recommend them if you want to waterline. If you just need a liner to use under the lash line or on the upper lid you’ll be fine, as they do last all day there. I wonder how the deep matte shades would work out for me, since Nothing On seemed to work out a little better than the other three that I tried, which all have shimmers. I’ll pick up a few and update!
The MAC Modern Twist Kajal Liner is available in 13 shades, four of which are shown swatched below in Nothing On (light beige), Grey Tide (platinum), Groundbreaker (warm rich bonzy brown) and Swamped (deep khaki green).
If you picked these liners up how did they work for you? Any waterline application tips for me?
Each MAC Modern Twist Kajal Liner retails for $17.00 and is available now at Nordstrom, Macy’s and maccosmetics.com.

These are really striking shades! They are worth picking up to try even if they don’t end up working on my waterline!

I’m lucky to get an eyeliner to stay on my lid, much less a waterline. I gave up on that pipedream years ago….

I just used a gold Anastasia one yesterday and it wore on my waterline like IRON. When I go to the mall next week I’m going to pick up a few more in case it was a fluke lol

That green is LIFE 😀

I love the colors. I don’t really use mac eyeliners as much anymore, but I’d give these a try.

The shades are very nice. The waterline is a tough one since that’s where I like to wear eyeliner too. Nothing On really needs to work on the waterline!

Grey Tide and Swamped look so pretty on your swatch, but too bad these kajal liners doesn’t perform as promised 🙁

I’m hoping the matte ones are better. I ordered two to check them out!
