SPF is more than just the lotion you see popping up in abundance the minute Valentine’s Day ends. Here are a few SPF products (non-makeup) that I’ve been playing around with this Summer and have been loving!
Coppertone has got a plethora of SPF… 9 out of 10 times it’s probably the very first drugstore SPF brand that you’ll think of. Some of my personal faves are the Clearly Sheer* ($6.99 // Target) because it’s light and doesn’t make me break out and lotion wise I love the Kids Tear Free* ($8.99 // Target) because it has no fragrance, oils or dyes and with my daughters sensitive skin I need to be careful about what we use in terms of a lotion.
I also like a few spray SPF items from Coppertone. Before you get all Judgey McJudgerson about spray SPF I mainly use the Ultra Guard* ($9.99 // Target) on myself because it’s quick and I can pop it in the Cabana Boy Spray Applicator (see below) to easily get at my back. The Coppertone Water Babies Lotion Spray ($7.99 // Target) is pediatrician recommended and I keep it on hand because my kids go to a day camp where they ask that you send your child with SPF so they can reapply throughout the day. The counselors aren’t allowed to rub a lotion on your child (obv) so they tell you spray only unless your kid is older and can do it themselves. Mine are too lazy about SPF still to bother with a lotion. Spray it is. This particular spray is one that I purchased at Walmart and it came in a pack with a face stick so that they aren’t spraying at their faces, which you shouldn’t be doing anyway.
Cabana Boy Spray Applicator* ($9.99 // My Cabana Boy). I reviewed this last year but it’s still one of my fave Summer things. You can’t always have someone around to apply spray lotion to your back and maybe you just don’t want some random touching you (who would?!). This is great for getting the hard to reach places when you’re alone and heading out into the sun.
It’s clearly no secret I’m obsessed with Aveeno products and have been for a long time. This brand was one of the first I found, even before starting my blog 6 years ago, that didn’t make my skin itch. Back then the internet was around, but blogs weren’t what they are now so to find something that worked for you without having any type of expert to lean on was a big deal. They’ve got moisturizers available specifically for the face like the Protect + Hydrate Lotion Sunscreen* ($7.99 // Target) and also other skin friendly SPF’s in the Protect + Hydrate Line* ($7.99 // Target) as well as in the Positively Radiant Line* ($11.59 // Target). I love these because they’re light and my skin never takes issue with ANY of them.
Can I get an AMEN for the Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield* ($65.00 // Sephora). I don’t know if you can tell from the pic, but it’s already half gone (which actually isn’t that bad – I’ve used it several times a week since April). It saved my makeup wearing butt while I was sweating in Las Vegas and saved my face from burning while we walked around. Couple that with the Murad Essential-C Day Moisture* ($60.00 // Sephora) for extra SPF and skin repair and you have yourself a major Summer winner! These are the priciest items you’ll find on this list and I’d absolutely repurchase them over and over.
Kiehl’s makes fabulous skin care all around so when you couple an amazing brand with sun protection there are sure to be some fabulous picks. A couple of items I’m loving from them lately are the Super Fluid UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50+* ($38.00 // Nordstrom), the Activated Sun ProtectorTM Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Water-Light Lotion for Face and Body* ($25.00 // Nordstrom) and the Clearly Corrective™ Dark Circle Perfector with SPF 30* ($38.00 // Nordstrom). This trio protects as well as provides the extra benefits of skincare.
SPF for your hair?! TBH I’d never heard of it until I saw the new items from Sun Bum! I love to use the Sun Bum Beach Formula Shampoo* ($17.99 // ULTA Beauty) to cleanse the oils out of my hair and then use the 3-in-1 Leave In* ($14.99 // ULTA Beauty) before I head out the door. When I want a beach look I skip conditioner and go right for the Sea Spray* ($14.99 // ULTA Beauty) for lazy waves or I pack it in my beach bag to look halfway decent after pool hour. I’ve also been digging the Sun Bum Zinc Oxide* ($10.00 // Nordstrom) because it’s clear and has Aloe & Vitamin E. I use this as extra protection for the places on my body that burn the easiest like my chest and shoulders, though this is also good for the face.
For those of you that have scars (and let’s be honest most of us have at least one) know that there’s a scar cream out there to protect scars as well as reduce their appearance. Mederma Scar Cream + SPF 30* ($20.99 // Walgreens) is clinically shown to improve the appearance of scars while the included SPF will help prevent sunburn on your scars. Might as well kill two birds with one stone!
What is your favorite non-makeup SPF item? I’d love to discover some more new ones!

I love that you shared so many options with people! It’s so easy to make sure you get SPF into your routine. I think a lot of people don’t realize that you don’t have to use regular sunblock.

I have a very limited arsenal of sunscreens, I use UV protective sunnies, big hats, seek shade, stay indoors during peak sun hours… Living in AZ has taught me how to protect myself from Old Sol.
