Teaching kids about Earth Month can easily be worked in to even the most hectic of lives by incorporating ideas and products into the things that we do every day anyway. The argument that there isn’t time to do your part just isn’t valid. We can all do our part in some way or another, beyond the recycling bin our community requires us to fill up and put out every week.
When you teach your children to help out in these small ways, even at a young age, they feel like they are contributing and are empowered to do more, learn more and educate others. As they grow and understand even more the contributions multiply. Imagine what can be achieved if they all do this? Below are a few ways you can begin to teach the little ones how to help the environment and stay healthy:
1. Educate. This isn’t done in a “school” way, but rather as you blow through your chores and errands look around you. Do you see a new tree that was planted? Let your kids know that planting trees helps the environment by providing oxygen. Before you leave the house have the kids run around and make sure all of the lights are off. As you load them into the car explain that doing so conserves electricity and saves energy, all of which isn’t easily replaceable. If your kids are anything like mine this will open the doors to a world of questions. If you don’t know all the answers check out the interwebs and learn together.
2. Personal Hygiene. During every day it all begins and ends with hygiene. Which is also always a battle. WHY do we have to force our kids to be clean?! To make my life easier I also look for products that are good for my kids and also fun.
Tom’s of Maine products are not only made with natural ingredients but they’ve also saved my butt in terms of getting my kids to brush their teeth on their own without a major bedtime battle. They love a good strawberry flavor and the Tom’s of Maine Children’s Silly Strawberry™ Fluoride Toothpaste also has adorable packaging… which obviously makes them want to use it even more.
As for the adults we go more for the minty flavors (though I can’t even lie I totally sneak the Strawberry when they’re at school).
Whole Care® Spearmint Fluoride Toothpaste
Whole Care® Peppermint Fluoride Toothpaste
Antiplaque & Whitening Peppermint Fluoride Free Toothpaste
Right now my kids are too little for deodorant but it’s also important as adults to teach by example. Plus kids are nothing if not honest and they’ll totally tell me if I smell. Tom’s of Maine Long-Lasting Deodorant in Fresh Apricot is not only effective but aluminum free. Once your kids are of age to wear deodorant themselves this is a great one to get them started on.
I found these products locally at Walmart.

3. Read a Book. Even our busiest days end with a book. After a shower it’s the simplest way to wind down and get those babies eye lids to droop. Some of our favorite Earth Day books are Curious George Plants a Tree (my kids have always been obsessed with that mischievous monkey!) and Green Start: Little Helpers.
These are all things that can be done daily, year round – not just in April! How would you easily teach your kids about Earth Month?

My girls would love that toothpaste!
My family has been using Tom’s of Maine for years. My kids actually prefer the minty flavors over the strawberry. Whatever gets them to brush their teeth! #client
I haven’t tried any TOM’S products yet, but I’ve heard good things.
My son is all about Earth Day! He has taught ME some things this week!

I just switched my son over to Tom’s for his toothpaste! He’s getting to the stinky boy age too, so I’ll probably pick up their deodorant for him as well

Great tips mama. I remember as a child but being the oldest, I usually check on my sibling’s (and cousins when they visit) if their toothbrushes are wet coz if not, I know they didn’t brush their teeth and I’ll get hella mad, LOL
