The first time anyone saw the likes of an Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow Palette there was only one (Infinity) and it was exclusive to Barneys. Now all six of them have released and are currently available at Sephora ($58.00), where I purchased mine. As much as I wanted to pick up all of them the price point kept me at only two – Infinity and Obscura.
The packaging is like that of the Ambient Lighting Palette but on a smaller scale. It’s got a sturdy feel, a secure closure and a generously sized mirror on the inside.
Obscura (Earth Tones) – cream, smokey brown, rose gold, coffee, cool bronze
In the eye look below I started off with UDPP and applied the rose gold shade all over the lid. The cool bronze shade is in the crease and smudged under the lower lash line. The coffee shade is at the outer V, brought into the crease and blended. The cream shade is at the inner corners and to highlight. The eye liner is Charlotte Tilbury Verushka Mink ‘Rock ‘n’ Kohl’ Iconic Liquid Eye Pencil with the smokey brown shade smudged on top and the mascara is Physician’s Formula Eye Boost Instant Lash Extensions Kit.
Infinity (Warm Neutrals) – warm ivory, dusty rose, bronzed mauve, cool taupe, dark cocoa
In the eye look below I started off with UDPP and applied the bronzed mauve shade all over the lid and through the crease. The dusty rose shade is a bit above the crease with the cool taupe shade above that, all blended together upward. The warm ivory shade is at the inner corners of the eye and to highlight with the dark cocoa shade at the outer V. I also smudged the bronzed mauve shade under the lower lash line. The eye liner is Urban Decay Hustle 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil and the mascara is Milani Total Lash Cover.
I’m sure by now you’ve heard about quality issues with these palettes. All seem to have a lot of powder kick-up and a few have pigment issues. In terms of the powder kick-up – Yes, I did experience this. It actually didn’t bother me as much as I expected it to. When I used the shades I was simply careful and didn’t go crazy with digging my brush in. The shadows are super soft so powder release will happen. It’s probably just more noticeable because of the style of the palette with the five eye shadows sitting on top of each other in waves.
I did not experience any issues regarding pigment with either Obscura or Infinity. Both palettes contained soft shades that were easy to apply and blend. My tips? Use good eye shadow brushes, be aware of the powder kick-up so that you can keep it at a minimum and use with a primer so the shades stay all day long.
Based off of my experience with these two palettes I do plan on picking up Exposure and Color Field. Have you bought any of these yet? Which ones are you lemming?
Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow Palettes are available now at Sephora and hourglasscosmetics.com.
These look so pretty, but I just haven’t pulled the trigger yet. The looks you created are beautiful

I still need to buy the Ambient Lighting Palette, nevermind these gorgeous new shadow palettes, haha! Love the colors (of course, I always love neutrals, haha) and love the look you did!

Infinity is so pretty! I’ve been eyeing Exposure but keep telling myself I don’t “need” another palette.

Maybe when the next Sephora sale comes around. I think they’re so beautiful, though.

I’ve thought about these a lot but I don’t know if I am buying any. I have those colors over and over. I think it’s the design that draws my eye to them.

I’m kind of torn on these because I’ve seen so many bloggers that either love it or hate it…personally, I think $58 is too much for just 4 shades, I really would have loved to see 8-10 for this price point!

I hear ya. It’s 5 shades so it breaks down to roughly $11-$12 a shade, which isn’t too off point in today’s market. There is definitely some powder but on the posts/videos I saw they were REALLY stabbing the brush in to show the powder coming off. I think just being aware of it and using it normally with good brushes shouldn’t be too bad. Again, it may just be the two palette colors that I picked up. I don’t have any experience with the others yet.
Those shades are gorgeous on you. The look of the palettes is just so modern and artistic. What’s a little powder kick up?!

It really wasn’t that bad IMO. Maybe it was the shades I picked up, but I also wasn’t going at the colors like I was stabbing someone lol
I’m thinking they may have retooled the formula a little from the press samples and first runs.
