MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator Photos & Review – Heavenly Creature Skincare

July 24, 2012

You’ve heard of it.  But probably as fast as you’ve heard of Volcanic Ash Exfoliator by MAC it disappeared.  I know bloggers who bought FOUR back-ups (names omitted to protect the innocent lol)!

So, whats the deal with this stuff?  In all the years it’s been released (I think at least once a year since 2008) it’s like mass hysteria.  I haven’t ever tried it.  I got a sample once but it ended up leaking everywhere.  Fate said “None for you”.

Finally, it’s in my hands.  On my face.  Giving me happy thoughts….

What the MAC website has to say about Volcanic Ash Exfoliator:

A highly effective, dual-purpose foaming, cleansing and exfoliating scrub blending natural Volcanic Ash with fine sugar crystals. Refines and unclogs the skin, adds instant moisture: leaves skin feeling soft and comfortably clean. Mineral-rich. May be used effectively on any part of face or body. Rinses off with warm water.

100 ml / 3.4 US fl

When you squeeze a bit out (and you don’t need much) Volcanic Ash Exfoliator has the appearance of wet coffee grounds.  Luckily, it smells better and has what I believe to be better results on the face than coffee grounds would.  It’s gritty (hello, exfoliator, duh) and as you first smooth it out sort of feels like clay.

My skin can lean towards sensitive, but even though VAE feels rough, it didn’t hurt or dry my skin out in the least.  After I was all cleansed my skin was left feeling soft and supple.  And, it didn’t break me out.  YAY!

Originally (back in 2008, I believe) this was sold in tub form.  I do love this squeeze bottle better.  It’s a lot more sanitary, and it allows for more controlled use.  Usage on this is one to three times a week.  I have only been doing it once a week, and that’s been working well.  Because of this, I know it’ll last a longggg time.

Worth the hype?  Yep.

For more information on this collection, please see the Official Press Release.

MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator retails for $28.00 and is available at your local MAC counter (try Nordstrom) or store, as well as online at maccosmetics.com.  This item is, once again, Limited Edition (I just spoke to MAC chat)… BUT as of this blog posting, is still available.
