NYX Iced Mocha 617 Jumbo Eye Pencil Swatches & Review

July 15, 2011

Well, I did it. I dug into my bag o’ NYX and tested and used my first product since the whole sale fail mess. I’m still not so willing to buy from them, but I’m ok with giving what I already have here a fair go of it. No point in letting makeup go to waste, and hopefully the swatches & reviews will help others!

This past week I’ve done 2 posts featuring Eye Shadow Pencils from Urban Decay and Wet N Wild. I’ve had a few questions about how they compare to the NYX pencils. I’ve actually never used the NYX pencils before, so that was another reason I wanted to bust this out, because I wanted to be able to answer your questions!

In my bag o’ NYX I had one Jumbo Eye Pencil in Iced Mocha (617) that I picked up some time ago from Ulta. All day yesterday I gave it a go and conducted a few different tests.

From the NYX website:
A radiant eye liner that also doubles as an eye shadow. Made with a blend of mineral oil and powder, our creamy Jumbo Eye Pencils glide on effortlessly—no pulling, tugging or fading—and come in a rainbow of vivid hues. Some call her chubby. We say voluptuous. Available in 28 shades.

The color of Iced Mocha is GORGEOUS and taupes are right up my alley. This pencil is smooth, easy to blend, and VIVID.

What about the wear? Not so happy about the wear. Of course, NYX said nothing about these being crease-resistant, but they DID say they “no fading”… creasing is basically fading, right?

First Application: I used UDPP on the left eye, and nothing on the right eye.

Results: After 1 Hour

Oddly, the side with the UDPP faded/creased more so than the side without. I decided to try it again, this time using UDPP on both sides and setting with an eye shadow. I used Le Metier de Beaute Bronze Topaz, from the Penelope Kaleidoscope Eye Kit.

Results: Second run, After 1 hour

Definitely not as bad this time around, but like the Wet N Wild, the Jumbo Eye Pencil’s from NYX seemed to be used best as a liner, set with an eye shadow.

Basically this creases less than the Wet N Wild but more than the Urban Decay. On my Wet N Wild post, a reader suggested blending them out, which would probably be the best way to go. Personally, I like wearing them thicker to show off the color. So it’s looking like for Eye Shadow Pencils, I’ll be sticking with Urban Decay.

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil’s retail for $4.50 and are available at Ulta or NYXcosmetics.com.
