Topsy Twist Bun Hair Tutorial

*This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #GoodyStyle #CollectiveBias

Not too long ago my brother-in-law got married. At the same time I was recovering from surgery so I wasn’t exactly mobile. But, I have a now 7 year old little girl who has some seriously out of control hair and needed an updo. She hates when I brush it because it’s always knotted (no matter how often we get at it) and it pulls/hurts her. That day she was being extra difficult and I just couldn’t battle…. so, to do her hair, I did a topsy-tail…. but I kept topsy-ing and twisting… and the Topsy Twist Bun was born.

For this hairstyle you’ll need the following: Goody Ouchless Girls Oval Brush, Goody Ouchless Elastics, bobby pins and hairspray.

The Goody Ouchless Girls Oval Brush is essential because the FlexGlide Bristles made it possible to brush my daughters hair entirely without her feeling any pain and without any fighting. The bristles are strong enough to get through all of the knots and mess but in a gentle way so as not to cause her any pain. (She actually said “WOW, mommy, I can’t even feel this”). My girl is DRAMA. If she could feel it, I’d know about it. I wish I had this brush the countless times before when we did this style!

The Goody Ouchless Elastics give a comfortable and secure hold to your hairstyle and are completely void of that metal piece that snags in your hair causing you grief all day.

Now, it’s likely that the Topsy Twist Bun already exists, all hair styles seem to at this point. This is just what I call it and it was discovered by me on accident. A parenting fail became a parenting win, if you will. Since that time this hairstyle has been a go-to for us on just about every occasion – fancy or not. I’ve gotten pretty good at it so I feel like I can give you some good tips on how to make it easier on you and your daughter.

My daughters hair is fine, but thick. It’s actually rather thin on top but thicker as it goes down. It’s bizarre, to be sure, and also has an impossible cowlick at the back left crown area. Hairstyles ain’t easy in this house. Hopefully the tutorial below will help you out, it’s so easy you probably don’t even need the pics, but they’re there just in case. 😉

Tutorial:

  1. Begin by taking the Goody Ouchless Girls Oval Brush and brushing through the hair completely, making sure there are no knots. Since my daughters hair is fine and silky once it’s brushed I spritz in some hairspray and brush that through as well.
  2. Choose one of your Goody Ouchless Elastics (I used a pink one for the tutorial because that’s her preference). Unless your daughter has very thin and fine hair you won’t be able to see the color of the elastic at the end, but Goody does offer Goody Ouchless Elastics in small, clear bands (shown in the main pic).
  3. Wrap the elastic around so it’s in a low ponytail.
  4. Right above the elastic split the hair into equal halves.
  5. Take the ponytail upwards and slip it down through the center of the halves.
  6. Pull through so it looks like two separate twists.
  7. Repeat step 5 and 6.
  8. Tighten by pulling the long hair left on the ponytail apart.
  9. Keep flipping what you have left on the ponytail through the center of the halves (step 5) until there is no hair left. You may still have random strands sticking up, but that’s okay. See step 10! 😉
  10. Secure with bobby pins and spray again with the hair spray. I don’t have any actual tips on where to place the pins, but I do them all over and I make sure if any hair has escaped that they’re placed in the bun securely.

The style is quick and easy with a result perfect for all of the upcoming Easter festivities and, of course, the impending wedding season!

I found the Goody brand products used to complete this hair style at my local Target. From now until March 19, 2016 you can use your Cartwheel app to save 20% off on Kids Accessories and 20% off on Goody Hairbrushes. Make sure you KEEP CHECKING your Cartwheel for new Goody product offers and visit the Goody Facebook Page for more hair talk!

What is your go-to hairstyle for your kids? Fancy event or otherwise, I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

WTF Fashion Trends & How to Save Money // Splurge vs. Steal

Affiliate Links

This weeks Makeup Wars got me in a splurge vs. steal frame of mind and I got to thinking what else would be good to share? Then I was shopping online and saw the most ridiculous things… some of which are THOUSANDS of dollars (some of the bags, though… never in a million years no matter what the price). Most of us out there can’t afford to throw down money on a trend… even if they are on the cute end of the spectrum. Regardless, there’s definitely a less expensive option out there for you in just about every style and I wanted to share few of my favorites!

Handbags. If you are going to spend a lot of money on a handbag you need to do your research. If you want to save some money you have a lot of options in this category thanks to Target. Until 2/6/16 you can also save $10 off a $35 handbag or jewelry purchase at Target with code STYLE. I pulled a few of my faves but you can find a lot more on the website.

Rebecca Minkoff Love Crossbody $295.00 // Merona Quilted Crossbody $29.99
(A major splurge would be to get the Chanel Qiulted Boy Bag which retails upwards of $4,000.00)

Celine Trio$850.00 (sale: $544.00) // Triple Compartment Crossbody Handbag $29.99
This is one of my dream bags. I love when things can be organized! Tom Ford also has one for $1,190.00 if you’re so inclined =\

Michael Kors Susannah Medium Quilted Tote $358.00 // Mossimo™ Quilted Tote $39.99
If money is no object the Salvatore Ferragamo Ginette retails for $1950.00 and is drool-worthy!

Are you coveting the Fendi Bag Charm? The most expensive one I’ve personally seen is $1,200 (here). If I’m spending that much money it better be an entire bag. Here are other options:

Fendi $900.00 // Sophie Hulme $295.00 // Michael Kors $48.00 // Diane von Furstenberg $48.00

You get your patches at the patch ceremony. If you didn’t get the Troop Beverly Hills reference we can’t be friends. Patches aka stickers are big. Personally, I don’t get it. My daughter has Shopkins stickers that she puts everywhere. That, I get (unless it’s on the furniture which is not okay). Adults putting a patch or sticker that costs over $100 on a bag that cost them thousands blows my freaking mind. And you guys KNOW I love me some planner stickers and stickers in general. Regardless, you can still shop this trend somewhat affordably.

When is the acceptable? When your bag is damaged in some way and you need to cover it up. In which case keep it affordable. Maybe you found your dream LV on consignment but it’s got a weird stain or scratch. The sticker is an excellent way to cover that up.

Anya Hindmarch $225.00 // Skinnydip $9.00

Shopping Tips

If you’re going to take the plunge and make a big purchase do your research. This is a big investment and you want something that isn’t a trend. You want classic so it stands the test of time. You want wearable so you can use it often. You want durable (yes, there are SO MANY designer bags that are complete crap) so it lasts. Join Facebook groups, forums… stalk Instagrams and YouTube to check reviews – a lot of people will do a “1 year later” video or even a video of their first purchase luxury bag to show you how well it held up.

Buy consignment. Shopping at consignment stores is a fantastic way to get luxury items for less. I’ve personally used TheRealReal to buy and sell a few high-end items and have been extremely happy with their service. New members get a $25 credit and they even offer discounts up to 20% off items – even on brands like Louis Vuitton (right now promo code HITS gets you 20% off until 2/14!)! Please do your research before buying from any website to assure the items you’re getting will be authentic.

The deals and the sales. If you must buy the splurge wait until there is some kind of deal or sale going on.

  • Neiman Marcus does a deal quite frequently where you can get $50 off a $200 qualifying purchase or sometimes even earn up to a $500 gift card back. Sign up for the emails and you’ll get 10% off your purchase.
  • Websites like Shopbop also do sales several times a year as do stores like Nordstrom.
  • If discounts are your thing and you’re on point use sites like Hautelook or Gilt to snap up designer fashions and beauty.

Cash back. Shop with sites like ebates to get cash back on your purchases.

What are your tips for shopping trends and saving money?

4 Pumpkin Spice Favorites for Fall

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Burt’s Bees at Target for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

It’s Fall so I’m sure you’ve heard many people shouting about pumpkin spice all the things. Maybe you’re tired of hearing about it. Or maybe you’re like me and you’re tired of hearing how basic it is. There is nothing basic about Pumpkin Spice. Pumpkin Spice anything is amazing. Food, drink, beauty… I’d wear Pumpkin Spice if I wanted someone to chase and eat me.

Because of my long-term love of Pumpkin Spice here is me sharing four of my favorite PS things.

Pumpkin Spice Latte. Yes. I’m that girl. There is no shame in walking up to the counter and ordering the largest Pumpkin Spice Latte you can get your hands on. I don’t even crave it until Fall hits and then I can’t get enough of it. It’s tasty, smells amazing and warms up your insides. Somehow I never get tired of it, either!! All year I’m just straight “coffee, please” until that Pumpkin Spice season.

Pumpkin Spice Cinnamon Rolls. I had no idea these things existed (I’m no baker so trust me, no creating is happening here) but it’s almost like finding a unicorn in the Fall. A unicorn bathing in pumpkin spice among the fallen leaves. How’s that for a picture? Obviously these taste better than fallen leaves would… maybe this is how unicorns taste?

Burt’s Bees® Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm. Speaking of unicorns Burt’s Bees® Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm is BACK AT TARGET! Why am I freaking out? Because I thought I missed it. I’ve been seeing it all over social media but it only just now popped up in my store. This lip balm is everything you need on your lips this Fall and it’s exclusive to Target for a limited time. Stock up because this is not a flavor to be missed!

Burt’s Bees® lip balm is 100% natural and infused with flavors of creamy pumpkin and just a hint of spice. Beeswax and other beneficial nutrients are naturally conditioning to the lips providing a ton of moisture. It’s free of parabens, phthalates, petrolatum and SLS. Because I love the Pumpkin Spice flavor so much I have several stashed around the house (in my desk, bedside, vanity) and even one in my car. If you like the sounds of how this makes your lips feel and Pumpkin Spice isn’t your deal then make sure to check out the variety of other yummy flavors!

Burt’s Bees® Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm is Available Only at Target! I found mine at the top of the display on the side of an endcap (see below). Grab yours as soon as you see it because it’s limited edition!

Pumpkin Spice Latte Pizza. This is not a drill. I repeat, this is not a drill. 2015 marks the first year I’ve seen or heard of this amazing creation. It’s reminiscent of a S’more but on a whole other Fall level. If the Pumpkin Spice aspect wouldn’t have gotten me the toasted marshmallows totally would have.

When Fall hits what’s the first Pumpkin Spice thing that you grab for?

Great Legs + Splatter Mani Nail Hack feat. Sally Hansen

I am a member of the Collective Bias® Social Fabric® Community. This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper amplification for Collective Bias and its advertiser. #MySummerLook #CollectiveBias

One of my favorite things about Summer are the outdoor parties. It’s relaxing to let the kids run around and play outside while us parents can get some adult conversation in! Parties are also fun because it gives me an excuse to do something on-theme with my nails and also get to the body pampering so I can have great legs to match! Since the 4th of July is coming I decided I wanted to muster up as much talent as I could for nail art and create something Independence Day inspired.

I headed to Target to check out what new Summer goodies they had out. I picked up some new products from Sally Hansen (Color Foil abounds!) as well as some of the necessary tools. Of course, the Banana Boat Sport Broad Spectrum SPF and Schick shaving products were sitting there as well, reminding me hairy legs aren’t okay and I need to get on that asap.

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, for nail art I’d rank around a 2. MAYBE a 3 if you’ve been drinking a lot of lemonade. The Sally Hansen Nail Art Pens are made for people of all levels of nail artistry. I have actually kept away from nail art pens of any kind because of past bad experiences but the ones from Sally Hansen are really fabulous – very easy to work with and control.

I used the above items to create the manicure below, which I like to call a Splatter Mani Nail Hack. I don’t enjoy messes and spitting polish through a straw onto your nails… that just doesn’t sit well with me. If you’re with me on that one, you’re going to love this.

Paint a base coat of your desired shade (I used Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Pucker Up & Pacific Blue) then make random streaks across the nails with your Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Pen (I used White, obv). Next grab a dotting tool, (for some reason mine is shy, but it’s from the Sally Hansen Nail Art Tool Kit) which works better than a brush when you’re using the Color Foils, and streak as many shades as you want around the white. For my mani I used Leaden Lilac and Liquid Gold.

After all of that is dry place a coat of Sally Hansen Color Frenzy (I used Red, White & Hue) over-top and add a top coat. No clean-up required! It ends up looking somewhat like splatter nail art, but without the extreme mess.

If you’d rather spit on your hands when you splatter you can still have some fun nail art times with the Sally Hansen Color Foils. Below I used Liquid Gold as a base and made a funky french mani by painting Leaden Lilac at the tips. Festoon your accent nail by painting Sally Hansen Great White Triple Shine Nail Polish as your base and add a coat of Sally Hansen Color Frenzy Red, White & Hue.

Now, just because your nails look festive, does not mean that it’s time for you to head out the door. Give thought to the entire package and shave the legs (as I’ve said many times before on this blog my go-to is the Schick Hydro-Silk Sensitive Care razors and Skintimate Shave Gel). After you’re smooth always remember to add your SPF. The Banana Boat Sport Performance Cool Zone is fantastic because it’s clear and instantly cools & refreshes.

Now it’s time for you to show off your Summer Look!

There will be an Instagram contest going on from June 26th until July 10th! $2,250 in Target gift cards will be given away to get you summer ready! Do the following and you’re entered! Simple Sally!

  • Take a photo of yourself getting summer ready

Sonia Kashuk Beauty Means Luxury for EVERY BODY

I post a lot of high end, designer products on this blog. Those products are clearly not very economical and sometimes the quality isn’t worthy of the extreme price tag. But, I just can’t deny the luxury of fine cosmetics. If you’re the same and lust for the quality but don’t want to blow your paycheck on one eyeshadow then you need to get yourself to a Target and get your hands on some products from Sonia Kashuk. Sonia Kashuk is a makeup artist that works directly with Target so that there is no middle man. This eliminates extra distribution costs, making the price point of her products more realistic without the quality suffering. This lifestyle beauty brand focuses on accessible and affordable products to fulfill all of your wants, needs and desires. The quality rivals any prestige department store brand at a fraction of the cost. For more information, check out the video where Sonia Kashuk herself talks about her line and relationship with Target. If you’re new to the brand definitely be sure to check out my swatches below of some of my favorite products by Sonia Kashuk. There is also a video embedded at the bottom of this post where I’ll talk more about each of them.

Pink Innocencia Eau de Toilette – this fragrance is amazing. It’s a sweet floral that isn’t overly strong but provides a fun and sophisticated scent that I love to wear day or night.

Sonia Kashuk Tools Dense Blush/Powder Brush No. 24 & Chic Luminosity Blush/Bronzer Duo in Glimmer – You’ve probably seen me talk about the other color duo Glisten before (I reviewed it last year!) and I love how I can blend the colors of the blush/bronzer duo together so that a swipe of the brush can give my cheeks a luminous, peachy, flawless color. The Dense Blush/Powder Brush aids in adding the perfect amount of color to the cheeks. My favorite part of this brush is that it’s just firm enough to apply the ideal amount of powder to the face but isn’t flimsy and hard to control.

Eye Couture Palette in Eye on Neutral Shimmer – This palette is fantastic because it combines several of the most popular nude palettes out there into one affordable and compact palette. Every shade in Eye on Neutral Shimmer is wearable day or night, blend like a dream and wear all day long over a primer. The texture of the shadows is soft and the pigment of the shades is impressive.

Here is a video with a little more detail about these products:

Apps You Need: Target Cartwheel & $1,000 Target GiftCard® GIVEAWAY!

This may come as a shock to some of you, but I LOVE to clip coupons. I always have! I remember when I was little I used to sit there with the ads and clip every single coupon out, even if it was for cat food… and we never owned a cat. This was the 80’s and way before the binders of extreme couponers, so our storage solution was a huge shoebox. Here’s the part that won’t be a shock… I always forget them at home. What the heck is the point in all that coupon clipping when you don’t even bring them to the store?! I still clip, I still forget, even 20-some years later. Old habits die hard, I guess. Target got into my head while I was either sleeping or having a pre-senior moment and developed an awesome app for people like me. Cartwheel is an app for your desktop, tablet, mobile web (iPhone or Android) that has over 700 offers (read: coupons) on in-store purchases. If you’re using on your phone all you need to do is scan the barcode on an item in-store and it will immediately tell you if that item has an offer. Each barcode generated by Cartwheel is unique to you and holds all of the offers on your Cartwheel list. All you need to do is simply scan the barcode one time at the point of purchase (after scanning any other coupons, discounts, etc.) and all the discounts on your list will be applied! Easily sign up with your Facebook info to see what your friends are buying. Don’t worry, if for some reason you want to use an offer for something secret simply make your list private and it won’t post publicly. For your eyes only! If you don’t have Facebook you can also sign up with your Target login information (email). Okay, all of you extreme couponers… this is for you – yes you can stack coupons and discounts (use Cartwheel with any other Target discounts or coupons, manufacturers’ coupons and REDcard discount) and also take advantage of multi-use offers (restrictions: limit of 4 items per offer, per transaction; limit of 6 Cartwheel scans per day). Another fun aspect of Cartwheel is earning badges (which makes this all the more addicting for me). Badges are awarded for reaching savings milestones ($10, $25, $50, etc.), interacting with Cartwheel (adding an offer to your list), and via social sharing (an invited friend who joins Cartwheel). For each badge that is earned, a new spot on your Cartwheel list is opened (each guest starts with 10 spots on their list. More spots are earned when badges are awarded). They also offer Cartwheel collections which are curated lists of offers that make it easy for you to add items to your list on-the-go. The collections are created to support seasonal offerings and categorical offers (grocery, women’s apparel, baby items, etc.). Collections are not comprehensive lists of all offers. No more clipping, no more storing, no more saving scraps of paper in a shoebox… ahhhh… organization and de-cluttering makes me crazy happy. Comment below and tell me what products you’d use Cartwheel the most on to earn an automatic entry into a random drawing for a $1000 Target GiftCard®! One lucky winner will be picked from participating blogs. Sweepstakes Rules: No duplicate comments. You may receive (2) total entries by selecting from the following entry methods:
