One of my favorite things about Summer are the outdoor parties. It’s relaxing to let the kids run around and play outside while us parents can get some adult conversation in! Parties are also fun because it gives me an excuse to do something on-theme with my nails and also get to the body pampering so I can have great legs to match! Since the 4th of July is coming I decided I wanted to muster up as much talent as I could for nail art and create something Independence Day inspired.

I headed to Target to check out what new Summer goodies they had out. I picked up some new products from Sally Hansen (Color Foil abounds!) as well as some of the necessary tools. Of course, the Banana Boat Sport Broad Spectrum SPF and Schick shaving products were sitting there as well, reminding me hairy legs aren’t okay and I need to get on that asap.

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, for nail art I’d rank around a 2. MAYBE a 3 if you’ve been drinking a lot of lemonade. The Sally Hansen Nail Art Pens are made for people of all levels of nail artistry. I have actually kept away from nail art pens of any kind because of past bad experiences but the ones from Sally Hansen are really fabulous – very easy to work with and control.

I used the above items to create the manicure below, which I like to call a Splatter Mani Nail Hack. I don’t enjoy messes and spitting polish through a straw onto your nails… that just doesn’t sit well with me. If you’re with me on that one, you’re going to love this.

Paint a base coat of your desired shade (I used Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Pucker Up & Pacific Blue) then make random streaks across the nails with your Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Pen (I used White, obv). Next grab a dotting tool, (for some reason mine is shy, but it’s from the Sally Hansen Nail Art Tool Kit) which works better than a brush when you’re using the Color Foils, and streak as many shades as you want around the white. For my mani I used Leaden Lilac and Liquid Gold.

After all of that is dry place a coat of Sally Hansen Color Frenzy (I used Red, White & Hue) over-top and add a top coat. No clean-up required! It ends up looking somewhat like splatter nail art, but without the extreme mess.

If you’d rather spit on your hands when you splatter you can still have some fun nail art times with the Sally Hansen Color Foils. Below I used Liquid Gold as a base and made a funky french mani by painting Leaden Lilac at the tips. Festoon your accent nail by painting Sally Hansen Great White Triple Shine Nail Polish as your base and add a coat of Sally Hansen Color Frenzy Red, White & Hue.

Now, just because your nails look festive, does not mean that it’s time for you to head out the door. Give thought to the entire package and shave the legs (as I’ve said many times before on this blog my go-to is the Schick Hydro-Silk Sensitive Care razors and Skintimate Shave Gel). After you’re smooth always remember to add your SPF. The Banana Boat Sport Performance Cool Zone is fantastic because it’s clear and instantly cools & refreshes.

Now it’s time for you to show off your Summer Look!

Makeup Wars – My Beauty Diary

This week for Makeup Wars we decided to do a beauty diary. Basically a “my day in beauty”. I tried to be diligent in writing down what I was using all day, so hopefully I don’t forget anything! Here’s what happens to my face, bod & hair throughout the day (beauty wise!).

Good morning!
I wake up around 7-8am (God willing, sometimes insomnia visits and that becomes around 3am). After my son is out the door I hop in the shower and hit my mug with Murad Clarifying Cleanser and my Clarisonic. I also like to use a lip scrub from LUSH. Currently I’m still using Santa Baby from Christmas. Once or twice a week I exfoliate my face with Kate Somerville ExfoliKate. For the bod I’ve been using Dove Pistachio Cream with Magnolia Body Wash & Body Bar. When shaving happens I generally use Schick Hydro Silk and Skintimate Shave Gel. Hair gets the AMAZE-BALLS OGX Sea Mineral Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner. I haven’t even been using a hair mask once a week, because the OGX is that good.

Out of the bathroom I start by applying Kate Somerville Anti-Bac Acne Treatment Lotion all over my face. Then I apply a spray lotion all over my body – something like the Vaseline Spray & Go or St. Ives Fresh Hydration Spray. The hair gets a generous hit of Living Proof No Frizz Styling Cream (starting at the ends and putting very little at the crown) and Agadir Argan Oil at the ends. My fave perfume is Chanel Chance EDT but lately I’m also reaching for Chloe Roses de Chloe.

In the interest of saving time I’ll just go through my daily makeup routine when I’m not actually going anywhere but the store or to pick the kids up from school. Generally (unless something is being tested) I start with the eyes and apply Urban Decay Primer Potion. MAC Utterly Becoming Paint Pot is an excellent base for all things eye balls and on top of that I go easy with Urban Decay Naked Basics or Hourglass Suede Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo. Lately I’ve been getting at my brows with Vincent Longo Eyebrow Micro Pencil and NARS Oural Brow Gel. For a liner I reach for something neutral like Marc Jacobs Ro(Cocoa), Urban Decay Hustle or MUFE Aqua Eyes in 24L. Mascara is usually IT Cosmetics Tightline and/or Milani Total Lash Cover. Face Makeup is IT Cosmetics Celebration Foundation, IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye/Hello Light Liquid Brightener and IT Cosmetics Full Coverage CC+ Cream. On the cheeks I’m using NARS Olympia for contouring and one of the six Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blushes. For my lips, when it’s just an easy day like this, it’s always some sort of sheer-semi sheer gloss like my current fave YSL Gloss Volupte in Golden (20).

Through the day…
During the day I usually just touch up as needed. Generally that just means a dusting of IT Cosmetics Celebration Foundation on the nose and reapplying gloss. More often than not, though, I just end up slicking on Jack Black Lip Balm (of which I’m obsessed with).

Nighty Night!
The makeup removal process is quick for me. I remove my eye makeup with MAC Gently Off Eye & Lip Remover. My makeup is removed by using Murad Clarifying Cleanser & the Clarisonic. Lately I’ve been obsessively staring at wrinkles by my eyes, so I start out my skincare regime with Le Metier de Beaute Revive Eye Concentrate and then I smooth on StriVectin SD Advanced. Because that isn’t moisturizing enough for me in the evening I also use Kate Somerville Oil-Free Moisturizer. I can’t fall asleep with dry lips so I always dab on a bit of LUSH Honey Trap Lip Balm. I also check for stray eye brow hairs that managed to pop up and get at them with my Tweezerman Tweezers.

After all of that I settle down to watch a show and slather on some LUSH Lemony Flutter & pop on my gloves.

I seriously didn’t feel high maintenance about myself until I wrote this post. Tell me I’m not alone!

Schick Hydro Silk Razor and Skintimate Moisturizing Cream Shave Revitalizing Review

My legs feel SO good right now. If you haven’t been weirded out by that statement, and are still with me, I can tell you why. I am about to introduce you to the best razor I’ve ever tried in my life. It’s the Schick Hydro Silk Razor.

I have incredibly sensitive skin. The only lotion I can use daily is from Aveeno or I get horrible itchy skin and hives… complete with an expensive trip to the Doctor for two prescriptions. It’s because of this I’m a little wary of trying new things and I have to be careful what razors and shave creams I use.

Some facts on the Schick Hydro Silk Razor (from the included press release):

  • Water-activated moisturizing serum throughout each shave.
  • 5 curve-sensing blades deliver an incredibly close shave.
  • Unique skin guards help protect skin from irritation.
  • Compact oval cartridge shape for closeness and hydration in all zones.
  • Beautiful, ergonomic and soft aqueous handle.

The Schick Hydro Silk Razor is said to “hydrate skin like no other razor”. After using this product in conjunction with the Skintimate Moisturizing Cream Shave (which is extra gentle and revitalizing as well as provides maximum hydration), I can 100% say that it does. After I towel off I usually have to immediately add on my lotion or my skin starts to feel itchy and uncomfortable. I didn’t get that sensation after using the Cream Shave and the Schick Hydro Silk Razor. It was an amazing feeling that I can’t even begin to describe unless you’ve gone through similar reactions to your skin.

I was able to shave my legs quickly and efficiently with absolutely no irritation or nicks and cuts. I recommend these products a million times over.

The Schick Hydro Silk razor is available as of January 2012 for $9.99 for the razor and $14.99 for a 4-pack of refill cartridges.

The Skintimate Moisturizing Cream Shave is now available and retails for $3.99.

You can find these products at supermarkets, drug stores, and mass market retailers nationwide.
