So you want to start a designer handbag collection? But where to begin? What is the best investment? Obviously if this is your first designer pick you don’t want to go full tilt with buying a Louis Vuitton or Chanel, yet you also want to step up from what’s available at Target.
The best way to get started in buying designer handbags is to find a fantastic designer that makes a bag that’s not only trendy, but sturdy. You want this to last and contrary to popular belief buying designer doesn’t necessarily mean your bag will hold up. One of my absolute favorite handbag designers is Rebecca Minkoff. Her designs are always on trend, the bags are made well and they usually sport similarities to other handbags that most of the population desires but can’t easily afford to purchase.
Here are some of my current favorites from Rebecca Minkoff:
Now that we have the designer how else can you save money? Shop.the.sales. My favorite website to buy Rebecca Minkoff from is Shopbop. Not only is there a wide selection of items like handbags, accessories and clothing from Rebecca Minkoff (and other brands) but they usually always have at least one or two marked on sale and, like RIGHT NOW, they’ll have extra sales where you can save even more money!
From now until October 14, 2016 (11:59pm EST) you can save 25% off of purchases of $500 or less and 30% off of purchases over $500 using code MAINEVENT16 at checkout! Click here for more info.
Since August (!!!!!) Holiday makeup collections have been out in full force and they’re showing no signs of slowing down. Because I love to shop I thought it’d be fun to share with you a few beauty items I picked up and a few that are on my wishlist (based on reviews from websites and other bloggers). Note: these items are, for the most part, limited edition. Shop early!
In alphabetical order:
Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette($42.00 // ULTA Beauty). I bought this when it first released and am obsessed with it. You know you’ve heard of it, you know you want it. I also need that Mario palette!
beautyblender® + Too Faced Holiday Kit($40.00 // Sephora). I’m obsessed with this. It’s baby pink AND it has an awesome beautyblender AND one of my favorite TF highlighters AND a blotterazzi that I LOVE. Everyone just go ahead and buy me this for my bday. I’ll wait.
BECCA Blushed With Light Palette($34.00 // Sephora). BECCA blushes are just so pretty and glowy… one of the few brands where I don’t mind my blushes to shimmer a bit because it’s not overkill and doesn’t accent pores.
Benefit Cosmetics Sassy Lassie “Chick Picks” Beauty Bestsellers Kit($39.00 // Sephora). So many new products, so little time. This kit features 4 of the must-have products from the brand, all of which I love!
Bobbi Brown New York Palette($65.00 // Nordstrom). Sure, the colors are something you might already own… but you guys know how I love packaging. Also how much I LOVE New York. There are also kits for Paris and London!
Burberry Beauty Festive Set($115.00 // Nordstrom). Military Red Lipstick is one of my fave reds ever and it’s in this kit. That along with nail polish and a lot of glow make it a NEED.
Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Muse Luxury Palette($52.00 // Nordstrom). Excellent shadow quality from this brand PLUS all the gold tones you need to do holiday in one palette.
IT Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Essentials Your Superhero Eyes Must-Have Eye Set($28.00 // ULTA Beauty). Oh, that’s a mouthful… but Superhero MATTE shades that you can transform into non-matte shades? Great product performance and a fabulous price. Own you some IT.
Jouer Powder Highlighter($24.00 // Nordstrom). Particularly in the shade Rose Quartz. Citrine seems to be the hot seller… but Rose Quartz is where it’s at.
Kat Von D Everlasting Mini Liquid Lipstick Set($49.00 // Sephora). Though Lolita 2 is my fave (and not in this set) there are a ton of shades that I’d love to try and the color palette is one I gravitate towards. Except for maybe that purple… but I’d try it 😉
LORAC Mega Pro Palette 3($59.00 // ULTA Beauty). LORAC has always had wonderful shadows and I love their palettes… but Mega Pro 3 is really speaking to me in all the ways.
MAKE UP FOR EVER Artistic Lip Ink and Brush Set ($40.00 // Sephora). I love a good red and I love how different the product is. Definitely a good shade for the holidays!
PÜR Cosmetics The Perfect Matte 5 Pc Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick Collection w/ Lip Oil($34.00 // ULTA Beauty). Another long product name but you have no idea how long I’ve wanted to try this liquid lipstick. I work fo the brand and can’t get my hands on them! Insanely popular, must have.
Sephora Favorites Trending: Beauty’s Most Coveted($75.00 // Sephora). Fave brands + fave products = gift set win. Give to yourself 😉
Tarte Tartelette Treasures Eye Set ($59.00 // ULTA Beauty). Tartelette in Bloom and Tarteist Mascara are some of my favorite products. I haven’t tried the Double Take Eyeliner but at a $92.00 value for just $59.00 I’ll take my chances.
Urban Decay Junkie Vice Lipstick Palette($35.00 // Sephora). The only lip palette I’ve ever LOVED. It’s a good deal and full of must-have cold weather shades.
It’s time for the ULTA Beauty 21 Days of Beauty Sale Event! From now until September 24 you’ll get to shop the “beauty steals” from your fave brands that are up to 50% off – as well as much more! Make sure you check the ULTA Beauty website every day or stop in. These daily deals are while supplies last, so if you’re making a big drive I’d call ahead to check quantities if you can’t be there right when they open.
Let’s get to the daily deals! Click the pictures below or the links to shop direct!
It’s my favorite time of the year – the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! With a lot of personal things going on this year I wasn’t able to get to the store to shop on day one so I picked up a few things online and I do plan on going in at a later date to check out more items. The sale begins July 14 for any Nordstrom Debit or Credit Cardholders and then begins on July 22 for everyone else. Check out my picks below and make sure you let me know what you’re going for!
*AHAVA Mineral Hand Cream Duo($29.00). The first time I ever got this was during a Nordstrom Anniversary Sale maybe 2 years ago and it’s been a staple in my life ever since. The scent is perfection and it feels amazing. I keep it by my bed and slather it on before bed. It’s not greasy but it is moisturizing so you can drift off immediately after applying. IDK why I didn’t think that other products would also exist but there’s a AHAVA Mineral Body Lotion Duo($48.00) too! Life is good.
*Burberry ‘Glow-to-Go’ Set($76.00). My favorite eyeshadow of life is in this set (Pale Barley) along with several other killer items in a beautiful Burberry pouch. Yassss yasss yaaaaaassss.
*Clarisonic ‘Mia Fit – Pink’ Skin Cleansing System($153.00). Last month I got this as a press sample and I love it even more than the bigger size! It’s much easier for me to hold and maneuver around with the same results. After the sale the price will go up to $219.00 so grab it now!
*Drybar ‘Beach in a Box’ Collection($140.00). I’ve never personally tried these items but I hear they’re good and they’ve been on my “someone buy me this for my bday” list for a while. Hair clips, curling iron, brush, styling products… anything for that beachy look, amiright?!
*Kiehl’s Jumbo Creme de Corps with Pump($52.00). If you’ve never tried this cream out before then you’re missing out. This jumbo size is a great deal during the sale and will last you a long time.
*Murad ‘Perfectly Beautiful’ Skincare Set($89.00). The Invisiblur™ Perfecting Shield is one of my fave items, but it’s pricey. This set takes the sting out of the cost by pairing it up with two other awesome products!
*adidas ‘Superstar’ Sneaker($59.90). I can’t even tell you the last time I owned just a plain white sneaker, but these call to me. I love them more than anyone should love shoes ever.
*Alex and Ani Wrap Bracelet($29.90). I don’t wear much arm candy but this one in Gold, vintage looking and is exactly what I love to wear to dress up. The price is perfect, too!
*Alexander Wang Darcy Lambskin Leather Tote($598.90). TBH I’m not much of a hobo bag person lately. I tend towards a bag that can easily be worn crossbody. BUT. Look at the Rose Gold studs on the bottom! AHHH! So beautiful.
*Kendra Scott ‘Elisa’ Pendant Necklace($32.90). There are four options but Pyrite is my fave. I have a few of these necklaces and they just wear so well and match everything. If you don’t own at least one get on it ASAP!
*Tom Ford ‘Alicia’ 59mm Sunglasses($253.90). I have been coveting Tom Ford Sunglasses for awhile now and I think I’ve finally found the perfect pair for me in these shades!
*UGG® ‘Cobie II’ Block Heel Bootie($129.90). I have an older pair of black booties that have seen better days. UGG shoes are always comfortable for me and wearing a thick heel makes me feel sturdy and tall… I need all the help I can get with tall!
Since 2012 when Rebecca Minkofffirst hit my radar I’ve been slightly obsessed. Mostly with the bags but I do have quite a bit of jewelry and even shoes! I love the edgy look, the colors, the shape of the bags… basically every thing just works with me and my style. All of my Rebecca Minkoff items are no longer available, but I did just purchase a few more things and extend my wishlist a bit. It’s below in case you need any ideas on what to buy!
The items show in the pic are listed below starting at the top left going to right. By the descriptions they should be easy to figure out 😉 The original price is listed and crossed out with the sale price already figured out for you beside it.
I’m telling you what… I already have a black quilted Rebecca Minkoff Cross Body and I’m STILL ready to buy that one pictured because of the oil slick colored metal… so gorgeous!
How have I acquired so much Rebecca Minkoff over the years? Mostly through online shopping on SHOPBOP. A lot of times the items on Shopbop are exclusive to the site, but the biggest reason that I buy a lot of my Minkoff items there is because of the SHOPBOP SALES. One of which is going on right now!
Click here & use code INTHEFAM to save 25% on your Shopbop purchase!
The sale is site wide (with some exclusions, none of which involve the Rebecca Minkoff brand) and if you’re a registered Shopbop customer you can use the code now. If you’re not registered with them you can shop starting on April 5, 2016. The sale ends on April 7, 2016 at 11:59pm PT.
On the heels of one of my purge/de-stash sessions and a bit of organization the Beauty Spotlight Team started a series on Beauty Storage & Organization. This is my week and, let me tell you, it really needed done. Yes, again.
A month or two ago I went through some of my makeup and got rid of it – and I tried to be as ruthless as possible. It was just time. The items I got rid of were either old (and now live that garbage life) or were something I never reached for (given to friends/family). Of course, I couldn’t get rid of everything that I don’t reach for constantly (what kind of beauty blogger/collector would that make me?!). One of my favorite places that items went were to a nursing home. I sent my husband in to work with a huge box of items and one of his co-workers took ALL of the nail polishes to a nursing home where volunteers painted the residents nails. It’s now a “thing” there and I’m so excited the polishes went to a good home and are making people smile and feel pretty!
When my day for this series approached I realized I still had a lot more to do. I’d purchased a few more items to help me organize things as well as bought a new mirror and I hadn’t even opened any of it yet. Below are pics of most of my makeup storage – don’t worry, I’ll be more descriptive underneath. 😉
My vanity is from Kirklands, I believe. My husband bought it for me at some point in time during the first year we were dating (so this is back in 2003). There’s also a matching full length mirror. I’m trying to be an adult and get a new one, but you know in your head when you want something you have to find exactly that and you can’t settle or be happy with anything else? I’m on the hunt for an antique vanity. The problem is, they’re expensive and people are rarely selling them (around here, anyway) unless they’re all busted up to the point where you can’t redo anything.
On top of the vanity I have the Zahra Beauty x Coffee Break With Dani 5 Slot Organizer ($25.00 // Zahra Beauty). This is a recent purchase and I thought it would be fabulous for keeping all of the brushes, eye liners, lip pencils and mascaras that I use the most frequently right where I can see them. Too often I’m digging around in my liners and I can never find what I’m looking for. Now, it’s right there in front of my face. I believe it’s limited edition, so if you love it, pick it up now! In front of that I got theIsaac Jacobs Acrylic Makeup Organizer ($13.90 // Amazon) just to hold a few more easy-to-grab essentials like lipsticks, glosses, primers… I also finally picked up a simplehuman Sensor Mirror ($200.00 // Neiman Marcus) and got rid of my old one. The look of the simplehuman really cleaned up the vanity and gave me a lot more space.
Under my vanity is a 3-drawer Organizer Cube that I picked up at Michael’s. It was my original storage for my polishes and now holds hair products for myself and my daughter. I also have a lazy-Susan in that Tiffany blue shade… I picked it up at Ross or Marshall’s… something like that… and it’s probably for crafting but it holds makeup brushes. Before I got the 5 Slot Organizer from Zahra it held ALL of my brushes. Now it holds extras and back-ups.
To the right of the vanity is a tall jewelry armoire that I found on Craig’s List (and lived to tell the tale, woooo!). Originally I gutted the inside to hold my makeup but grew out of that pretty quickly and moved it all to the Sherrieblossom ICEbOX Wide ($415.00 // Sherrieblossom) on top. In the ICEbOX are more items I use frequently enough to not put them back in my beauty room. In the jewelry armoire I now have only jewelry and some skincare.
Below is the beauty room, aka where the magic happens! It holds everything I can’t bear to part with and favorite items that I use for special occasions, bright or bold looks… etc. To build the desk we went to IKEA picked up two Alex Drawer Units($79.00 // IKEA) and a long table top. I keep all my “beauty to do” and flower props on top of it and it’s never this clean and organized. Ever.
Underneath are bags of product to give away on the blog and also to give to friends/family/donate. Fun fact: this room was supposed to be a master bathroom when we built our addition. Momma needed a beauty room! Some day we’ll figure it out and make it a bathroom lol
On the other wall is a tall white storage cabinet. Two of the shelves are used to hold nail art items, makeup bags and some backups of my favorite beauty products. The rest of the cabinet has items for my etsy Sticker Shop, scrapbooks and play-doh. Because, mom life.
I also have a lot of lotions and body washes… shampoos and those types of things in my bathroom, but I felt like this post was definitely long enough lol We can save bathroom beauty storage for another time 😉

This weeks Makeup Wars got me in a splurge vs. steal frame of mind and I got to thinking what else would be good to share? Then I was shopping online and saw the most ridiculous things… some of which are THOUSANDS of dollars (some of the bags, though… never in a million years no matter what the price). Most of us out there can’t afford to throw down money on a trend… even if they are on the cute end of the spectrum. Regardless, there’s definitely a less expensive option out there for you in just about every style and I wanted to share few of my favorites!
Handbags. If you are going to spend a lot of money on a handbag you need to do your research. If you want to save some money you have a lot of options in this category thanks to Target. Until 2/6/16 you can also save $10 off a $35 handbag or jewelry purchase at Target with code STYLE. I pulled a few of my faves but you can find a lot more on the website.
You get your patches at the patch ceremony. If you didn’t get the Troop Beverly Hills reference we can’t be friends. Patches aka stickers are big. Personally, I don’t get it. My daughter has Shopkins stickers that she puts everywhere. That, I get (unless it’s on the furniture which is not okay). Adults putting a patch or sticker that costs over $100 on a bag that cost them thousands blows my freaking mind. And you guys KNOW I love me some planner stickers and stickers in general. Regardless, you can still shop this trend somewhat affordably.
When is the acceptable? When your bag is damaged in some way and you need to cover it up. In which case keep it affordable. Maybe you found your dream LV on consignment but it’s got a weird stain or scratch. The sticker is an excellent way to cover that up.
If you’re going to take the plunge and make a big purchase do your research. This is a big investment and you want something that isn’t a trend. You want classic so it stands the test of time. You want wearable so you can use it often. You want durable (yes, there are SO MANY designer bags that are complete crap) so it lasts. Join Facebook groups, forums… stalk Instagrams and YouTube to check reviews – a lot of people will do a “1 year later” video or even a video of their first purchase luxury bag to show you how well it held up.
Buy consignment. Shopping at consignment stores is a fantastic way to get luxury items for less. I’ve personally used TheRealReal to buy and sell a few high-end items and have been extremely happy with their service. New members get a $25 credit and they even offer discounts up to 20% off items – even on brands like Louis Vuitton (right now promo code HITS gets you 20% off until 2/14!)! Please do your research before buying from any website to assure the items you’re getting will be authentic.
The deals and the sales. If you must buy the splurge wait until there is some kind of deal or sale going on.
Neiman Marcus does a deal quite frequently where you can get $50 off a $200 qualifying purchase or sometimes even earn up to a $500 gift card back. Sign up for the emails and you’ll get 10% off your purchase.
Websites like Shopbop also do sales several times a year as do stores like Nordstrom.
If discounts are your thing and you’re on point use sites like Hautelook or Gilt to snap up designer fashions and beauty.
Cash back. Shop with sites like ebates to get cash back on your purchases.
What are your tips for shopping trends and saving money?
Beauty lovers are the easiest to shop for. It’s almost as though the options are limitless! This week, for Makeup Wars, we’re giving some recommendations on stocking stuffers. Below you’ll find Stocking Stuffer Ideas for a Beauty Lover – and there’s sure to be something that you know they’ll love 😉
COVERGIRL Outlast Longwear Lipstick* (find it at ULTA Beauty). The shade shown below is called Sofia in Love and was made for Sofia Vergara to wear on her wedding day to Joe Manganiello! That basically means it’s the perfect red – there are many other reds to choose from so be sure to check out Red Siren, Red Revenge or Red Rogue!
Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick (find it at Macy’s). You’ve heard the hype and it’s real. It’s the lip color that won’t quit so it’s the perfect gift! I’m wearing Heathers in this photo and I was SO impressed with how well it lasted through a Christmas party full of eats and drinks.
NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick (find it at ULTA Beauty). If you’re looking to save money these are the next best thing to the Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks. The color selection is decent and you have a lot more neutral options than with ABH. I’d recommend buying them online, though… my stores are always sold out of the best colors!!
LUSH Santa Baby (find it at LUSH). My fave lip tint is now in a tube! Seasonally appropriate and it smells, tastes and looks amazing. Buy buy buy!
Hooked on Hair:
Redken* (find it at ULTA Beauty). Three products I’ve been using and loving from Redken are the Pillow Proof Blow Dry Two Day Extender, Express Primer and Diamond Oil. It’s been a whole other level of hair care for me. The oil is the only one I’ve tried that doesn’t seem to travel up my strands and into the crown of my head making it even more oily. It stays where you put it and to me that’s a miracle. If the giftee enjoys hair care, they need this trio.
For the Brow Obsessed:
Salon Perfect* (find it at Walmart). Have they whined about how they want to try awesome brow gels and powders but they’re so expensive? Hook them up with the Salon Perfect ones at Walmart. Same thing, a third of the cost!
Salon Perfect Lashes* (find it at Walmart). If lashes are worn then you can never ever own enough. I know for my cousin if I handed her a stocking full of false lashes she’d love me forever. The Salon Perfect lashes are available at Walmart and look really good on.
Nudestix* (find it at Sephora). The Nudestix line is full of perfect multi-taskers. Travel-friendly and easy to use you’ll find items that work well on lips, eyes, cheeks and brows! So, if you’re not sure what they’d like this line will cover every single base with minimal product purchasing.
Gaga for Gadgets:
Real Techniques* (find it at ULTA Beauty). If they’re into brushes you need to get them some of the Bold Metals line from Real Techniques. They’re so pretty and the metal handles make them seasonally perfect.
Salon Perfect* (find it at Walmart). Affordable beauty gadgets abound! Who else not only has lashes and brow products but also a handy tool for helping you apply those lashes?! Get on it.
Because They Love Skin Care:
AVEENO* (find it at Target). There is some skin sensitivity up in this house and we are good with Aveeno. If the person you’re stuffing a stocking for is picky about what they can put on their body this line is an excellent choice. There are wonderful items available for the body and also the face.
Murad* (find it at ULTA Beauty). I put a lot of Murad on my face and have recently become very obsessed with the benefits of Vitamin C. They have a lot of products to suit any skin issues (or non-issues) but if your recipient hasn’t checked out the “C” line you must introduce them!
Lather* (find it at lather.com). If you follow me on Instagram you’ve seen this one already – but it smells so good it’s landing here too so no one misses out! Lather has 4 options of stocking stuffers that smell amazing. It’s a candle/soap duo that you can get in Lavender, Lemongrass, Vanilla and Cranberry Orange.
OPI* (find it at ULTA Beauty). OPI has released some gorgeous nail polish sets lately full of fun ways to jazz up core colors. You can also currently find their new Starlight collection in stores now!
Sally Hansen Nail Art Pens (find it at Target). I’m not the greatest at nail art but I love to use these pens when I want to doodle a bit on my nails. If your person loves nail art these will be an excellent way for them to customize their looks.
Sinful Colors Nail Polish* (find it at Walgreens). For budget friendly nail polish options Sinful Polish gives you a ton of colors, both neutral and loud. Because they’re so reasonably priced it’s an easy add on to a gift or even easier to fill up an entire stocking with!
Pretty Perfect Nail Polish* (find it at prettyperfect.com). I talked about this brand last year – you can pick a polish and put ANY name you want on it. Everyone likes to see their name on things 😉 Ask someone to marry you with one… there are endless options!
If You’re On a Budget:
ELF* (find it at Target). I originally posted these items on my Instagram but they’re perfect for this post as well because they’re the best at being budget friendly! Basically anything you choose will work so pick what works best for the recipient. There are also some amazing holiday kits out!
Hard Candy* (find it at Walmart). If your recipient loves to bring the fun and flash then Hard Candy is the budget friendly beauty pick for them! Beautiful picks are available for holiday including palettes, kits, lip gloss and even a Disco Lip Gloss ball!
PIXI Beauty* (find it at Target). PIXI has a fabulous collection of core items as well as holiday picks. You’ll find everything you need in this section from holiday sets to lip balms to liners to shadows… anything you can think of!
Pick from the list and mix it up or stock them up on their must-haves (if they love lashes they can never have enough)!

*A * denotes that the item was received as a press sample. This post also contains affiliate links.
One of my favorite ways to give gifts is by filling up a stocking full of fantastic items. It’s so fun to hand over a stocking full of things you’ll know someone will love versus just a gift card or a sweater. Don’t get me wrong, you can include such things…. but the stocking fancies it up and when you add in a few extras makes it that much more special.
First you want to find the most special stocking you can. To make it special you have to pick one up that would best suit your girlfriend. Does she like frills? Sports? Fur? Clearly if you’re reading this she’d be more the glam/frilly type – high-maintenance but worth it 😉
Next, find your inspiration. Marie Claire magazine is loaded with gift giving ideas for the beauty lover, the fashionista, the fragrance aficionado…. just go ahead and use this as your shopping Bible while you’re out and about and buy all the things.
After you find the items you want to include in the stocking you can wrap a few, leave a few unwrapped… do all, don’t do all… whatever you’re into. Presentation matters (why would you want to give a beautiful stocking with beautiful gifts and have the items shoved and stuck all around in there?! No. Just don’t.
I picked up a few items recommended by Marie Claire in the Beauty Workbook – She’s All That – the OPI Nail Polish, the Chanel Joues Contraste (which is covered by the plant but it’s seriously gorgeous) and a red lip which is the MAC Dita Von Teese Lipstick – not on this particular listing but they did speak to Dita Von Teese briefly in this issue and I just love her… and did I mention it’s red?!… so it’s in there. I also like to put in some yummy things that I know they’ll love… think luxury and decadence!
Because Marie Claire helped you along make sure to also include a copy in the stocking. The magazine is loaded with how-to guides, workbooks, editorials, fashion, tips… a ton of fashion and beauty education resources as well as seasonal trends that your girlfriend will definitely enjoy.
What would you like to get in your stocking from loved ones?
I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.
