8 Holiday Gift Ideas for the Nail Polish Lover

Press Sample

Nail polish by the singles and by the sets are really some of the easiest things to pick up for stocking stuffers or small gifts. Below are a few ideas for the nail polish lover in your life. Some of these are a little lesser known, but still fabulous and unlikely to already be in your recipient’s collection.

  1. OPI. Every year, all year OPI makes beautiful gift sets. This year for holiday they have a Take 10 set ($24.95) filled with 10 minis of some of their most popular shades. Another fave set of mine is Top This! ($27.00). Which is a full sized trio of top coats – regular, matte and the sparkly Snowflakes in the Air – which is exclusive to this kit.
  2. NYX. Precious Pearls are so cool and popular as an accent nail or as an all over mani. These kits are affordable ($9.99 each) and easy to use. It even includes a funnel to return the escaped, unused pearls back to the bottle! Three shades are available in Black, White and Opal.
  3. Incoco. These nail polish applique’s are high quality, easy to apply and available in a multitude of shades and designs. At only $7.99-$8.99 they’re budget friendly for stocking stuffers or even to add into a holiday card.
  4. Salma Hayek. Beautiful shades of polish ranging from pearls to shimmers to creams. There is a wide selection of colors and all of the ones shown below were opaque in one to two coats. This line is available only at CVS and each one retails for $5.99.
  5. Nailtini. Who doesn’t want to mix their own polishes at home? Nailtini offers sets of “You Call It” so you can mix and layer your own shades! $24.00 each and endless possibilities!
  6. Sally Hansen. This line is certainly popular in drugstores, but these holiday lacquers from “Bling in the New Year” are so sparkly and beautiful! You absolutely must gift them to your friends. Four shades are available for $7.99 each.
  7. Jamberry. This is a DIY nail application with an insane amount of design and color options. They’re more expensive than others ($15.00 each) but there are a lot of designs to choose from. Place an order, host a party or join the team!
  8. Megan Miller. ($12.00 each) I love the look of these bottles, with the cork toppers. It’s different and makes me think of wine, which is always a happy time. And, that rhymed… I swear I’m not on wine….

NYX sets:

Swatches of Salma Hayek Nail Lacquer:

(L-R: Goldstone, Evening Haze, Cayenne, Lilac, Red Sienna, Prickly Pear, Honey Blossom)

November 2013 ipsy Glam Bag Review & Swatches

It’s got to be so repetitive hearing me go on about how amazing the ipsy Glam Bag is every single month. The value in each bag is always around 5-7 times what you pay plus more. For yet another month, I continue to be not just impressed, but completely blown away.

The theme for the November 2013 ipsy Glam Bag is Glam It Up.

What you see above is a gold metallic faux croc bag with a pink zipper. This bag is so perfect because it can be your makeup bag but can also double as your wristlet.

The card is basically there to give you the run down of the discounts you can get by visiting the Glam Room on ipsy.com. As usual, there are a ton of deals, specifically 30% off EM Michelle Phan!

What’s inside?

(L-R: GLAMGLOW YOUTHMUD, Pixi Subtly Suntouched Bronzer, Starlooks Amethyst Gem Eye Pencil, Be a Bombshell Lip Crayon in Hot Damn)

From GLAMGLOW, the YOUTHMUD™ Tinglexfoliate Treatment. I’ve totally heard of it, but never remember to buy it. I actually made a squeal noise when I saw it in this months bag lol I put it on but took it off after about a minute or two. It tingled but wasn’t painful. It says to leave on 10 minutes but I definitely don’t think my skin could handle it. I was left with soft skin that appeared to be brighter. I don’t know if it’ll replace my ExfoliKate, but I’m definitely happy to try it out before I go off and buy one.

From Nailtini, the Straight Up Color Nail Lacquer in Caviar Cocktail. Normally I’m a fan of this brand, but I thought this particular shade applied oddly and dried heavy on the streaks. However, only one coat of polish was needed for full opacity. The other shade given out was Champagne, which likely would have been more to my taste.

From em michelle phan, the Lash Gallery Dramatic Volume Waterproof Mascara in Black. I’m not a huge fan of waterproof, but every gal needs one on hand, right? This is a full sized product in this months bag, and I’m over the moon to try it! I thought it lengthened well… but drama? No. Volume? No. (scroll down to the pics below to see my FOTD & the NYX palette to see this mascara in action). Happy to try it, but won’t be purchasing it later on. However, I did already use the 30% off code and bought a few items from the website that I’ve heard wonderful things about!

From Be a Bombshell, the Lip Crayon in Hot Damn. This was actually very moisturizing and I loved that it had a moderate amount of pigment at first swipe but was buildable to a very bold shade. Another shade was available in Shameless, which people are saying is a wine color. That’s probably more of my go-to shade than a bright pink, but I’ll definitely still use this since the formula was lovely. I’m also wearing Hot Damn in the FOTD look below.

From Starlooks, the Gem Eye Pencil in Amethyst. This is definitely not me at all. At first I thought it was a pretty, silvery lilac, but it wears much more metallic purple rave girl… which I feel like I’m way too old for on a normal basis. There was also a Topaz shade that members could have received instead of this one.

From Pixi Beauty, the Bronzer in Subtly Suntouched. This is just gorgeous, though way too light for me to consider for a bronzer (see fotd below). The powder was soft and easy to blend and it’s definitely glowy so it will make an excellent highlight shade to use with a bronzer. Other members also could have received Summertime.

Definitely worth the $10 and then some. I am absolutely in for December since the value from ipsy remains fabulous and keeps getting better and better!

Ipsy does profile pages now, so here is mine. There is also a pretty amazing referral program in place. You refer friends and redeem points to get a sweet little bonus in your next bag. I’ve gotten some really fab full sized products as my bonuses, but, something new, you can use your points to choose your own bonus! I cashed in last month for a full size NYX Cosmetics Bronze Smokey Look Kit (see photos and swatches below, retail is $12.99!). Soooo go sign up because you’re missing out!

July 2013 ipsy Glam Bag Review & Swatches

Open letter to ipsy, I love you because you give me oodles of goodies for ten bucks. Love you long time. Infinity times infinity. Keep this up and no one in their right mind would cancel. Anyways….

The theme for the July 2013 ipsy Glam Bag is Beach Beauty.

What you see above is a clear, neon pink plastic cylindrical makeup bag. Probably not a makeup bag I’d buy, but I appreciate the new type of shape and clear bags are the “thing” now. Plastic is much better for a pool bag anyway since it will repel water rather than soak it in.

The card is basically there to give you the run down of what is in your bag and the discounts you can get by visiting the Glam Room on ipsy.com. There are quite a few this month, which is exciting!

What’s inside?

From Big Sexy Hair, Weather Proof Humidity Resistant Spray. This product works to set your hair style against humidity and keep it looking like it did right after you styled it. The reviews look good, so I’m excited to give this a whirl, as my hair is very defiant towards any sort of styling.

From Nailtini, Nail Lacquer in Mai Tai. Love this shade hot coral for Summer, it’s truly that perfect beach shade. Below is two coats.

From Coola, Mineral Face SPF 20 Unscented Moisturizer. Well, the biggest thing I love about the Glam Bag is the lack of skincare samples. However, I can’t complain too much about this one, because we all need SPF and the small tube is great for keeping in my makeup bag. You only need a small amount and it absorbs quickly, but there is a paste like odor to it and it felt slightly sticky on my skin.

From BH Cosmetics, California Collection Eyeshadow. This was actually intriguing. I’d heard of BH Cosmetics and seen their insanely huge palettes, but never made the move to purchase and test the quality myself. I found the formula to be dry, especially on Hollywood and San Francisco (Pink Sith actually drew little faces to represent the quality of each shadow, I die). Just not impressed with this one.

From Pop Beauty, Pouty Pop Crayon in Coral Crush. Three different shades went out to Glam subscribers and I received a pretty, bright pink with a slight hint of coral. This was glossy and creamy. My fave part of this months bag!

For having referrals, ipsy included this Nicole by OPI Nail Polish in Pretty in Plum(Selena Gomez Collection, January 2013). I already own this one, you can click the provided link to see swatches, so this will remain unused and go into a giveaway at some point. Supposedly referrals granted an UD shadow or this really cute bracelet… but a nail polish is just as lovely of a surprise!

Definitely worth the $10 and then some. I am absolutely in for August since the value from ipsy remains fabulous and keeps getting better and better!

Ipsy does profile pages now, so here is mine. And now they finally are offering a referral program, basically refer two friends get an UD shadow and a BaubleBar bracelet for free in your next bag (or, apparently a NOPI polish?!). Soooo go sign up because you’re missing out!
