Top 10 Nail Care Products

Nail Care products are available by the thousands.. maybe even more. For this Top 10 Tuesday I’m narrowing down my top nail care products to just ten. Oddly, I didn’t have 10 of any one item (such as cuticle oil or base coats, etc) to narrow this down with. It seems when I find a nail care item I love I stick with it, which is good news because you’ll know these items are HG for me and not just a passing fancy!

In no particular order:

  1. Cult Nails Glass Nail File. I’ve had this for at least a year, maybe two? I think I paid $10 way back but now they’re $15 and come with a case. But that’s how long this lasts! Well worth the investment!
  2. I am loving Revlon ColorStay Gel-Shine Top Coat for an incredibly glossy finish….
  3. ….but if I need my polish to dry super fast and still be glossy I go for Seche Vite.
  4. Sally Hansen Insta-Grip Fast Dry Base Coat. I love this so much! It dries like the wind. I started using it after I ran out of another fave – Butter London Nail Foundation (not pictured).
  5. Julep Essential Cuticle Oil. This has a roller ball, which excites me way more than it should. It’s also a great oil.
  6. Butter London Handbag Holiday Cuticle Oil. This is just a go-to of mine for the last year, fabulous moisture!
  7. Nicole by OPI Oil to Go. This just recently released, but it’s perfect for keeping in your purse. I’m always running out the door and I look at my nails and I’m all… ew. Especially in the winter, moisturize those cutes!
  8. LUSH Lemony Flutter. Is there anyone out there who doesn’t use this?! I smear it all over my hands, pop on some gloves and hang out. It’s a savior.
  9. Gloves. Seriously. Get yourself manicure gloves and soak that cream and oil in. Remember SOAK and LOCK!
  10. Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream. I got to try this through BzzAgent and I’ve been rebuying ever since! It’s coating, but sinks in. Fabulous!

December 2012 Julep Maven Box Swatches & Review – Bombshell

I seriously love the holiday season. How pretty are the beauty releases? The makeup, the nail polish… even the skin care glows. Glitter and glam just makes me smile. Warms my heart!

For December 2012Julep even tossed a fun craft into the Maven Box! And, although it was quite tasty, I’m not talking about the peppermint. In addition to two gorgeous nail polishes and a warming foot scrub, they also included a ring and instructions to make your own nail polish jewelry!

The two polishes included in the Bombshell Box for this month are Cindy and Hilary. Cindy is a beautiful apple green shimmer and Hilary has a clear base with copper and gold glitters.

Also included for this month is a warming foot scrub (my freezing feets thank you!) and a ring with a Cabochon stone to create your own bling!

Creating nail polish jewelry has always intrigued me. I’m not the craftiest person you’ll ever meet, so I never even looked into it. But, let me tell you, it’s addicting! I thought my ring turned out pretty cute:

When my hubs came home I made him push in the prongs better so the stone wouldn’t pop out. If tools are involved I’ve learned it is smart to wait.

So. You wanna be aMaven? You know you want to make some jewelry. If I can do it, you certainly can!

Being a Maven is SIMPLE. Sign up here and take the style quiz. After you sign up you’re eligible for all of the perks – including 20% off on all products plus free shipping on You can also add in more items to your box at a low cost.

November 2012 Julep Maven Box Swatches, Review & GIVEAWAY – Boho Glam

Last Summer I signed up for the Julep Maven program. I ended up not renewing because I wasn’t impressed with the quality of the polishes at the time. Recently Julep approached me to review a Maven box so I thought… it’s been a year, let’s give it another go. Finding a navy one coat wonder makes me SO GLAD I DID!

The Maven Box that I chose is Boho Glam. This box included two nail polishes in Toni(dusty vintage lilac cream) and Michelle (navy cream), Essential Cuticle Oil, and two pots of glitter, one in blue and one in purple.

Toni only needed two coats for full opacity and Michelle was a one coater! I am much more impressed with the polish formula this time around, though it was slightly runny (nothing out of hand) and I had to be careful.

I ADORE the Julep Cuticle Oil. I adored it a year ago, as well. It’s in roller ball form and works perfectly.

The glitters are fine and ridiculously pretty. They are also messy. In the photo you can see the card where Julep suggests sprinkling over the nail and then using a top coat. I thought dipping my nail in the pot was a better idea and, as you can see from the hot mess below, it coated my nail completely lol then I tried to smudge it out and do a gradient. IDK. For my first attempt with glitter I’m a smidge proud. But I know all you nail aficionados out there are beating your heads off of the desk haha.

Clearly, I’m no artist and I also don’t play one on TV. Below is my “art” which I like to call Glitter Fail. I am DETERMINED to get the hang of glitter, because it’s GORGEOUS and I love to look blingy.

Don’t be too harsh! And, PLEASE share your glitter tips with me in the comments!

So. You wanna be aMaven? You know you want to be as glitter-tastic as me 😉

Julep CARRIE and ALFRE Nail Polish Swatches and Review

In August, I signed up for the Julep Maven program. Since that time, a lot of things have gone down. In a nut shell, Julep was not living up to their end of the deal on referrals and some people were being double charged. You can read more about that HERE (right click/open new window) on The Polishaholic’s blog. She posted everything very eloquently and truthfully.

I got my Maven box pretty quickly after my initial sign up, and was really pleased with the packaging and the contents. If you’re interested in seeing my initial review of the box and program, please click here (right click/open new window).

Because of everything happening as outlined in The Polishaholics post, I cancelled my Maven subscription. I wasn’t double charged, and I did receive credit for 3 referrals, though I have no idea if that is accurate. The reason I cancelled was as a preemptive measure so that the things mentioned WOULDN’T happen. I figured once I tried everything I could sign back up if I liked the products and the company got their act together.

I will not be signing back up for the program. I have no idea if Julep has redeveloped their program or fixed anything, but I wasn’t pleased with the quality of their polishes. You can get a much better quality polish for a lot less $$ wise. AND I’ve tried to email them twice and neither email has been answered. This says to me, that as of now, nothing has changed. Hopefully, they’re working on it, because this program is a GREAT idea and a GREAT deal. They need a re-vamp on their program AND their customer service.

Now, on to the swatches!

Even though I wasn’t pleased with the polishes or the program, some of you out there might be! What good do these polishes do if they aren’t swatched?! Might as well, right?!

I love the Barbie/bubble gum pink that is Carrie. But I found that this cream polish did not coat evenly, and was RUNNY as all get out. I had tip wear within a day and a pretty decent sized chip on my pointer finger. I used 3 coats for the swatch photo.

I really love the color of Alfre as well. But as a frosty polish it was streaky and runny, though it did coat much better than Carrie. I also had tip wear rather quickly with this one, and for some reason it wouldn’t dry. I used 3 coats for the swatch photo.

Julep does recommend two coats with their polishes, but 2 coats was still REALLY sparse and I felt it definitely needed a third coat. As a side note, they are a 3-free brand.

The quality just isn’t there. For $14 you could go to Ulta and buy almost 2 of another polish (from OPI, Orly, Zoya, China Glaze) that is better quality and has more product in the bottle. If the polish is quality, regardless of the price, I’ll sing it’s praises. (For example, Le Metier de Beaute polishes are $$$ for their size BUT the quality is outstanding).

Julep Nail Polish retails for $14 and can be purchased on their website.

ETA – I did just email them regarding using my credit and a possible overcharge, I received a response within 5 minutes. That’s what I’m talking about, Julep! Awesome! Very happy with that =)

August 2011 JULEP MAVEN – Classic With A Twist

Well, I found a coupon code and signed up for another program. This one is called the Julep Maven Program. I’ve been reading a lot about Julep nail polishes, and have been interested to try, so when I saw a coupon code for $10 off of the normally $19.99 box I couldn’t pass it up – $9.99 for 2 nail polishes (the as yet unreleased Alfre and a pretty pink Carrie), Julep Nail Therapy, a full size Julep “Facial For Hands” Glycolic Hand Scrub, as well as a sample of the Scrub and a Cream. It’s a retail value of $76, so for $9.99 I’ll take it!

What happens is, you sign up, and you do a little short quiz, and they pick the maven box that the quiz deems best suits you. The BEST part about this is that you can change it to your liking lol I did. I messed around with the thing a couple times to get what I wanted, and I’m pretty happy with the selections. When you sign up you can cancel at ANY time or skip the month if you don’t like anything or just feel like passing. You also have the option to gift your box that month to a friend!

Here are some shots of how the box arrived and what was inside. I’ll be doing separate reviews of the products in the coming week.

So, what do you all think? Worth the retail of $19.99? At first impression, I’ll definitely be keeping up with the program for another month, to see how they treat the mavens after the initial launch.

If you’re interested in signing up yourself you can click below for a referral code and I’ll get $15 toward my next Julep order! Let me know if you DO sign up, they’ve been having issues with the referrals going through and people getting the credits.

Save $5 on your first order by using the code WELCOMEFB.

The program thus far appears interesting to me. I love trying new beauty items, and I must say I’m happier with my first month as a Julep Maven than I was with my first month of Birchbox.
