Top 10 New Hair Care Lines

There’s been a lot of hair care hitting my doorstep lately. Some brands I’ve heard of before and some I’ve never even seen a blip of. Since they’ve been arriving in 2016 I’ve been giving them all a go… and so has my husband, son and daughter. Because it’s go all or go home when it comes to hair care šŸ˜‰ Below I’ve picked out a few of my (our) favorites from what’s shown up and discussed why they’re awesome to make up this weeks Top 10 Tuesday – New Hair Care Lines.

1 // The largest collection of products I have to share in this list are from Matrix. This first group is from the StyleLink Collection which is their award-winning styling line. A couple are missing from the photo because my husband stole them… basically his holy grail hair styling product of choice was from Redken and they broke his heart and discontinued it. Around that time all of this stuff from Matrix showed up and he fell in love with the Over Achiever 3-in-1 ($18.00 // ULTA Beauty) and the Shape Switcher($18.00 // ULTA Beauty). He likes to have all-day hold but not have his hair look overly crunchy because then he says his hair looks like it’s thinning =| High maintenance.

My personal faves from StyleLink are the Smooth Setter Smoothing Cream($18.00 // ULTA Beauty) and Height Riser Volumizing Powder ($18.00 // ULTA Beauty). The Smoothing Cream really helps keep my frizz at bay without weighing it down in all the wrong places. Height Riser sucks up the excessive oil in my crown and gives an excellent hold all day.

2 // In keeping with the Matrix love we need to talk about the best smelling line of hair care in all of the land – Oil Wonders Volume Rose. Yes, you just saw “Oil” and “Volume” in the same title. I was a big skeptic because I wrestle with a very oily scalp, yet my favorite product from this line ended up being the Oil Wonders Volume Rose Plumping Mousse ($20.00 // ULTA Beauty). It kept frizz down and added volume… all without making my hair look oily. By days end my style still looked good, though it didn’t last into the next day like with Height Riser. When I’m looking for a sleeker style and the overall appearance of thick hair this one is my choice.

3 // You didn’t think I’d let Matrix swing on by without talking about dry shampoo did you? A lot of dry shampoos cross my path (since I basically need to inhale it to survive my oily headed life) but the Miracle Extender ($16.00 // ULTA Beauty) has me at another level. Super fab second day hair without the residue AND it smells TDF. YAAASSSS.

4 // StriVectin does hair care?! OF COURSE! Their Color Care Line($22.00-$29.00 // ULTA Beauty) is fabulous for not only keeping your dye job in check but will give you the qualities of strength, vibrancy, easy to manage… all those things youthful, untreated hair has. My hair feels shiny and soft even when I’m due for a touch-up at the salon. There are several other collections within the line, so if Color Care isn’t up your alley make sure to check the others out.

5 // If you’re looking to remove impurities pick yourself up some AveenoPure Renewal Shampoo & Conditioner($5.99 // Target). They use natural seaweed extract to refresh and make hair more manageable without over-stripping.

6 // For vitamin-infused, professional hair care you’ll want to look intoMitch Stone Shampoo & Conditioner($36.00 set // Mitch Stone). The line contains VComps which is a “proprietary blend of carefully-curated vitamins, minerals and oils, swirled together in a lush papaya base”. I loved how this worked well for both myself and my daughter (who has dry hair).

7 // When I think about a “pin-up” I’m immediately jealous. Killer bod, gorgeous skin, the best red lipstick and THE BEST HAIR. Beauty and Pinupsis a line I’ve never heard of but I was more than willing to give them a test run because of my pin-up obsession as well as the gorgeous packaging. There is a lot to choose from but my favorite item is the Sway Blow Out Styling Primer($26.00 // Beauty and Pin Ups). It cuts down on drying time while also cutting down on frizz. My daughter, with her dry hair, loves the Flaunt Silkening Shampoo and the Luxe Leave-In Spray On Revitalizing Conditioner.

8 // My holy grail for extending the look of my highlights in between touch-ups (as you know) is the John FriedaSheer Blonde line ($3.59 // ULTA Beauty). This extends the look of highlights for me so that I’m only going every other month rather than every month.

9 // Speaking of extending things you know that the Redken Pillow Proof($20.00 // ULTA Beauty) holds an extra special place in my heart. I use this frequently for getting an extra day out of my style and absorbing oils. I also need to give a major shout out to Braid Aid($25.00 // ULTA Beauty) because it’s literally the only way I can style my daughters hair and Beach Envy Volume Wave Aid ($20.00 // ULTA Beauty) for being my beach wavy hair drug of choice this coming Summer.

10 // Did you really think I’d let a Top 10 go by without mentioning the brand that started my entire frizz free lifestyle? Living Proofholds many faves of mine, most notably the no frizz line. Now they have a No Frizz Nourishing Oil($20.00 // Sephora). An OIL, you say? For this oily head? YES. Because I keep it only from the nape of the neck to the ends. It’s best for coarse hair, so a very little will do ya if you’re just trying to combat weather related frizzies.

Maintain Your Hair Color On a Budget feat. John Frieda Colour Care

My hair is grey. Not all of it is, but there’s a lot more than I personally think is necessary. I’ve always gotten my hair highlighted, but now, because of these greys, I need to go every two months rather than every three months. Expensive and to be honest annoying because my hair girl only works one or two days a week so it’s hard to schedule in with her during time that I also have free.

For the last few weeks I’ve been using the John Frieda Sheer BlondeĀ® Go Blonder system and am excited to share my thoughts with you on the product as well as a few tricks on how to use the makeup you have already in your stash to transform your favorite dark-haired makeup looks into one that’s wearable for your lighter locks.

The deal with the John Frieda Colour Care is to be able to tune-up and maintain your hair color in between salon trips. Essentially extending the time needed in between your appointments. I get a ton of blonde highlights so I chose the John Frieda Sheer BlondeĀ® Go Blonderā„¢ Lightening Shampoo, Lightening Conditioner and the Sheer BlondeĀ® Go Blonderā„¢In-Shower Lightening Treatment.

The shampoo and conditioner aren’t new products but when I’m trying something new I’m in it for the entire line. (I’m sure you’ve seen me on many posts in the past talking about how I hate getting a sample of shampoo but not the coordinating conditioner, especially when the directions say to use them together. Who uses one without the other when it states to use them together?! Who does that?!). When using all three products it’s said you can go two shades lighter and that it’ll look natural.

The In-Shower Lightening Treatmentis new. Even when used alone it says that it will soften dark roots and boost your blonde-ness. Obviously it’s all safe for color treated hair and won’t cause damage. This is exactly what I need.

I use the shampoo and conditioner throughout the time in between salon visits and then I blast my roots with the In-Shower Lightening Treatment at the two month mark to eek out that extra bit of time. I just passed that two month mark and the treatment was a Godsend because I just had an event this past weekend that was last-minute and allowed no time for salon appointments of any kind. Hello, life-saver.

Okay, so where can you get this magical hair love of mine? Right now you’re going to want to pick this up at Target because if you buy 3 John Frieda products you get a $5 gift card back (available until March 5, 2016). You can find them on an endcap display like the one below. Plus, if you follow me on social media you know I’m always at Target so of course I’m going to tell you to shop there.

Also, isn’t it crazy how your favorite makeup look can go completely blah once your change your hair color. That perfect red lip isn’t so perfect any more. As a brunette I feel like I can wear anything. It’s like no eyeshadow or lipstick is off limits. When I went blonder things definitely became off limits. Some tips for keeping your makeup on point with your hair color:

  • When you start off reach for a red lipstick or bold color that’s on the sheer side. This will help you get comfortable with new colors and allow you to play around with what you like so you’ll be able to have a smoother transition into the new shade.
  • Lighter eyeshadows are a must when I’m at my blondest. The blonde is so brightening to the over-all look I feel that when I wear only a dark shade all over my lid it makes my eyes look smaller.
  • Easy on the blush. I don’t know why this is but I feel like as a blonde I can’t get away with super dark blush colors in the berry family. I tend towards a bright, poppy pink that I just dab on lightly.

That’s not to say that blondes can’t wear a matte red lip, mauve blush or dark shadow shades – but you’ll need to play around with what suits your new hair in conjunction with your skin tone. Just because you’re blonde doesn’t mean that you automatically now have a warm complexion, but if may have warmed you up a bit if you were uber cool toned before. The above are just a few tips to help you ease into a new makeup routine without having to spend your money.

Makeup Wars

I wanted to go beyond the general things like brushes, hairdryers, straightening irons, curlers… etc and show you something I love to use when I’m in a pinch and need to refine my style and do it quickly. The

John Frieda Styling Tools by Conair Salon Shape Hot Air Brush

is my go-to for shiny, bouncy and quick hair.

My hair is super long and unruly. For general drying I absolutely have to use a regular ol’ hair dryer or let my hair air dry awhile. Once it’s almost dry I bust out this little beauty and get to styling. It’s quick and especially perfect for bangs or those front pieces that frame your face. Another tip – if you’re having a bad hair day or want to work with second day hair just spritz your hair lightly with water and use the Salon Shape Hot Air Brush to revive your look.

It’s excellent for keeping your hair looking full and even adds shine. Basically, this is the lazy girls best friend when she wants salon like hair.

The John Frieda Styling Tools by Conair Salon Shape Hot Air Brush retails for $39.99 and is available at Ulta.

I know. You’re probably like, “Brooke, you’re not blonde… stop”. I have Blonde highlights in there šŸ˜‰ aka color treated aka definitely lighter! The new Sheer Blonde Shampoo & Conditioner from John Frieda is meant to protect these highlights! (Or your highlights. Any color, really!).

Right off the shampoo and conditioner smell amazing. This is so important to me, almost as much as how well the products do what they’re intended to do. I want a fragrance for my hair that smells awesome, lingers and doesn’t give me a headache. These products cover that.

Next I love bubbles and lather. This shampoo lathers and feels great in my hands as I massage my scalp. The conditioner applies easily and allowed me to comb through my hair without the snags. Both were easy to rinse out.

After drying my hair I noticed the color did look better, to me. I tend to feel like my hair looks brassy in certain lighting, but each time I used this product it almost appeared glowy. I’ve been very, very pleased with this new formula!

Game, set, match, John Frieda… well played šŸ˜‰

These products are also available in Brilliant Brunette and Radiant Red.
