July 2015 ipsy Glam Bag Review & Swatches

The theme for the July 2015 ipsy Glam Bag is Summer Lovin’. Five products to “welcome back” Summer – which I don’t get… because it’s already been here… and I’m pretty much over the humidity of it all, TBH.

While this month’s bag was no match for the May Breakups to Makeup bag I did like it much better than last month’s bag. It’s a pretty multi-colored tribal cloth bad with a blue zipper.

What’s inside?

From pūr~lisse, pur-bright ultra skin brightening serum. While I don’t mind when ipsy throws in a skincare sample (because they’re mostly a makeup sub) I’m tiring of pūr~lisse hard. Not just in ipsy… in every beauty bag. I like it, but not enough to have 1000 samples of it laying around… because it’s a sample I can’t review it based on performance, but I’ve liked products from the brand in the past. So this isn’t a bad sample, I’m just over getting them.

From Eva NYC, Freshen Up Dry Shampoo. I heart getting dry shampoos in sub bags. I use the crap out of them. This one does a great job, smells amazing and leaves no white residue!

From City Color Cosmetics, HD Powder. Loose setting powders are my jam because they leave the skin looking matte, which I absolutely require. This particular one isn’t my favorite.. it felt a little too much for me. I like when they’re light enough to never know they were there. In a pinch, this’ll work.

From Nicka K New York, HQ Quad Eyeshadow. A beautiful addition to this month’s bag! A full size eyeshadow palette of pinky plum shades that work well and blend nicely. It looks like two different palettes went out and I likely would have preferred the colors of the other palette – they were bronzy neutrals with a pop of teal.

From Teeez Cosmetics, Read My Lips Lipstick. Everyone got the same shade which is a matte coral called Killing Me Softly. The packaging is to die for! LOVE that. Unfortunately it doesn’t apply evenly at all and tastes like plastic. Unfortunately because the shade and the packaging are on point.

Once again this month I cashed in some referral points for the other versions of the best physical ipsy bag of all time – the Breakups to Makeup bags. Three versions are available and you got one with your May ipsy shipment. For 500 points each you could get the others. It totally drained my balance but I’m totally okay with that because IT’S BREAKUPS TO MAKEUP!

This months bag was definitely worth the $10 – there are a ton of awesome products in there! That quad is awesome and you know no sub bag can go wrong by putting some dry shampoo in my bag.

Ipsy has profile pages, so here is mine. There is also a pretty decent referral program in place. You refer friends and redeem points to get a sweet little bonus in your next bag (use the points to choose your own!). I’ve gotten some really fab full sized products but definitely read the description because some of them are a lot of points for just a sample size. Previous bonuses have been from NYX, Tarte, Revlon and more! Note: These points DO expire. I didn’t know that until recently when I was logged in and noticed my point total… I left for dinner and came back and it was 300 points less. I wish I’d have known that ahead of time so I could have spent them, but hopefully this message will help you out so you don’t lose your points!

June 2015 ipsy Glam Bag Review & Swatches

The theme for the June 2015 ipsy Glam Bag is Swim Into Beauty. Five products that are Summer beauty must-haves, so says the glamazons of ipsy!

The bag is no match for last month’s bag which was made by Breakups to Makeup, but none-the-less it’s black with a fun hot neon coral zipper. It’s got a spongy feel which I’m not totally a fan of.

What’s inside?

From Formula X, Nail Color. I got the shade Power Source which is a bright, cheerful rosy pink shade. It’s a mini size and completely adorable! I love polish minis!

From Lavanila, The Healthy Body Butter in Pure Vanilla. I love how Lavanila body butter feels but I cannot stand the scent of vanilla. It gives me a migraine and just isn’t for me =( Luckily a lot of people love it so I can easily give it away.

From Smashbox, Photo Finish Foundation Primer. I’m one of the few people that is just not a fan of this cult fave product. It doesn’t do anything for me but sit on my face and feel awful. Maybe I’m too oily for it? I have found primers that I love, so if you’re like me check out the ones from PUR Minerals or the Murad Invisiblur (which is spendy but amazing).

From OFRA Cosmetics, Turquoise Eyeliner. I LOVE OFRA! Their products are wonderful and this is an awesome, full-size product to get in this month’s ipsy bag. The shade is totally on point for Summer and is easy to apply. Also, it lasts all day. WIN.

From tre’StiQue, Mini Shadow Crayon. I got the shade Kona Coffee which is a deep brown, but 3 other shades are also floating around. I was shocked to see how easily this pencil glided and how pigmented it was. It creases so make sure you use a secondary primer underneath if you check this one out.

Again this month I cashed in some referral points for one of my favorite products of all time – the skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels. Since I had some points expire I’ve been nervous about the ones I have left so I’m trying to use them up before it happens again lol However I am obsessed with these eye gels and I’d have bought as many as possible if I weren’t limited to one.

This months bag was definitely worth the $10 even with not liking 2 of the 5 products. The OFRA pencil was my fave and full sized and even though the polish and eye crayon were mini’s they’re those mini’s that I’ll get a lot of use out of.

May 2015 ipsy Glam Bag Review & Swatches

The theme for the May 2015 ipsy Glam Bag is Jetsetter. You guys. The actual bag is so fabulous there could be samples of turds inside and as long as it didn’t stain or ruin the bag I’d be okay with it.

I’ve seen a few versions of the bags floating around, all are created by Breakups to Makeup for ipsy. Mine says VIP: Very Important Products and it’s true… your smaller makeup bag does hold your most important beauty items. Those items that you can’t live without all day.

What’s inside?

From Jesse’s Girl, Pure Pigment Eye Dust. The shade I got is in Brown Sugar which is a matte brown. At first glance it looked orange toned in the pot, so I wasn’t too excited, but when I opened it up and swatched it’s the perfect terracotta brown shade. It’s very light and not incredibly pigmented but I feel like it’s meant to be that way because it looks good and works for what you need it to. I’m not the biggest fan of a loose eye shadow powder, I find it messy and tedious to work it out of a sifter, but for this shade I’ll do it!

From NUXE, Rêve de Miel® Facial Cleansing and Make-Up Removing Gel. To be honest I didn’t even try this one. For some reason I’m having a break out issue on my chin and I didn’t want to make things worse by trying a new skin care product from a brand I don’t know much about. My skin is sensitive and reacts easily to new products. At this point it’s not a risk I’m willing to take. It’s also touted on the ipsy site as being for dry skin, which I don’t have. The scent of it is also pretty foul. It’s surprising this was sent to me, since I filled out on the form that I have oily/combo skin.

From Chella, Eyebrow Color Pencil. The shade I got is in Tantalizing Taupe, which probably does well for most as a universal shade match. Personally most taupe shades always look a bit off on me. This wasn’t the case with the Chella pencil. I found that this shade matched perfectly and was very easy to use. My brow hair is sparse so the thin pencil made it easy to draw in a more natural look.

From Balanced Guru, Style Me Hair Oil. This is a nice oil for use at the ends of my hair. I also like to use oils like this on my feet for ultimate hydration. The light peppermint scent is refreshing and not overpowering.

From Urban Decay, 24/7 Glide on Lip Pencil. I got the shade Ozone and it’s one of my faves from way back. I love to wear red lips when I go out and Ozone is wonderful for keeping reds and other dark shades in-bounds. The mini size is perfect to keep in the makeup bag and pairs up well with this months bonus item which is a generous sampling of two of Urban Decay’s new Revolution High-Color Lip Gloss shades in Failbait and Bittersweet. The only thing that stinks about the lip gloss bonus is that the pots of product can get a bit messy. They gave so much product which is wonderful, but once you open them you can’t take them anywhere with you.

(L-R: UD Failbait, UD Bittersweet, Jesse’s Girl Brown Sugar, Chella Taupe, Vincent Longo Ambrosia Mist)

Maybe you’re wondering about the Vincent Longo Ambrosia Mist. I had some referral and review points and I was nervous they would expire and disappear so I picked this up to check it out. It’s actually a gel eye stain (bet you thought I would say lip stain) and I was shocked it was so sheer. IDK if I should be doing this, but I wear it on the lips lol ah well. I wasn’t a fan of it on my eyes so make it work.

Obviously I loved this months bag to death. Absolutely worth the $10 with the bag alone. I love the new UD Lipgloss formula (I have several here to review) and the other makeup items were surprise loves also, two of them appear to even be full sized!

April 2015 ipsy Glam Bag Review & Swatches

The theme for the April 2015 ipsy Glam Bag is Flower Power. I’ve said it before but I think the bag this month really is my all time favorite bag. And I’m not talking about the contents, I mean the actual bag!

This month the bag is straw with black, blue, pink, tan and white fabric woven through. Perfect for keeping in a beach bag or pool bag, or even to use as a small clutch on the boardwalk!

What’s inside?

From LATHER, Ultra Light Face Lotion. I love the LATHER Lip Balms and this is right on par with that fabulousness. A lovely lotion for day time and it smells good too!

From theBalm Cosmetics, NUDE Dude Eyeshadow Single. The shade I got is in Flirty and it’s a shimmering golden violet. Beyond all things gorgeous. I’ve always been a huge fan of products from theBalm and this shadow is right on par with what I’ve come to expect from the brand. Pigmented and easy to apply an blend. One of my fave items in this bag!

From Mullein & Sparrow, Mini Lip & Cheek Tint. There isn’t much of a tint to this one and I found it to be okay on the lips and pretty worthless on my cheeks. It smells okay but overall this one isn’t anything to write home about.

From MicaBeauty, Eye Primer. This was really awful, I couldn’t even use it. The formula was incredibly dry and difficult to apply and blend.

From Hikari Cosmetics, Blush in Tango. A beautiful and vibrant peachy pink shade. Super pigmented and soft. It’s also a generous, full-size making it one of my fave items in this month’s bag!

I was only half-impressed with this months bag. My fave products were the eyeshadow I got from theBalm and the blush from Hikari. I was definitely happy to add another LATHER product to my arsenal also, but the other two items are basically throw-aways. The $10 was still worth it, the blush definitely got us there.

March 2015 ipsy Glam Bag Review & Swatches

The theme for the March 2015 ipsy Glam Bag is Flower Power. I love the bag this month but I love the contents even more 😉

This month the bag is mostly blue with pink, yellow, grey and white floral on one side then completely blue on the other side.

What’s inside?

From Evelyn Iona Cosmetics, Concealer. Of everything this was my least favorite item to get in this month’s bag and TBH it really wasn’t all that bad formula wise – I just didn’t feel it really matched my skin tone. I wish sub services would stay away from skin color specific items since it’s so hard to know what will be perfect for each individual person.

From Pixi by Petra, Mesmerizing Mineral Duo. I got the shade Apricot Glow, which was made exclusively for ipsy. Pixi makes amazing eye shadows, always super smooth or easy to blend, and I’m always happy for more!

From NYX Cosmetics, Butter Lipstick. These lipsticks are incredible! The shade I got is in Pops but other subscribers could’ve also got Hunk or Little Susie. I love how pigmented these are but they apply so smooth and feel lovely.

From skyn ICELAND, Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels. As soon as I opened my bag this month I saw these and I shouted YES! These eye gels are my favorite thing for under my eyes EVER and they sent two pairs. Legit these are amazing for those days when you don’t sleep, are crying.. anything that makes you look like you have the bags. Um… can you tell I’m obsessed?

From Equitance™, brightening serum & spot corrector. While it’s hard to speak on the long-term effects of a small skincare sample I’m excited to use any spot cream I can on the small melasma spots I have on my cheeks. If this wows me after just a few times of use that the sample will allow I’ll definitely purchase.

Another insanely awesome month for ipsy. Awesome makeup products and a double up of my favorite eye gel patches of all time. Keep it up, ipsy! SO impressed!

Ipsy has profile pages, so here is mine. There is also a pretty decent referral program in place. February 2015 ipsy Glam Bag Review & Swatches

The theme for the February 2015 ipsy Glam Bag is #ipsylove. Clearly a perfect choice of theme for the month of love.. and I am sooo in love with this month’s bag.

This month the bag is pink, grey and white with diamond shapes on one side then completely pink on the other side.

What’s inside?

From Eva NYC, Up All Night Volumizing Spray. This spray is said to add volume and also protect from the heat. I can’t say it gave a ton of volume but my hair did feel soft. It also has a very light, soft scent to it that I love.

From Luxie Beauty, Large Angled Face Brush 504. Who doesn’t love getting makeup brushes in their subscription bags? This type of brush just happens to be my favorite (don’t even ask me how many MAC 168 brushes I own) for applying cheek products and this one from Luxie Beauty is amazing.

From ModelCo, BLUSH Cheek Powder. Why is this my new favorite blush of all time? I received the shade Peach Bellini which is a golden peach with a serious luminosity to it. So pigmented, easy to apply and blend… is it too much to say obsessed?

From “Pencil Me In” Cosmetics, Natural Eye Liner Pencil. This has nice pigment and decent staying power (just not on the waterline but normally I’m hard-pressed to find anything that is). I thought it was easy to apply and I loved the color. It’s so nice getting a shade other than black! (all ipsters received the shade Amethyst).

From CARGO Cosmetics, Mini Lip Gloss. Super shiny in a pretty pink shade (all ipsters received the shade Anguilla), not sticky at all! I can’t wear this particular color on it’s own but it’s the perfect shade for layering over lipsticks and the mini size makes it perfect for living in my makeup bag.

Oh, hi, ipsy.. you knocked it out of the freaking park this month. SO MANY makeup products and then one hair products. THIS is what I love and THIS is what it should always be about. Fantastic, best ipsy bag EVER.

Ipsy has profile pages, so here is mine. There is also a pretty decent referral program in place. You refer friends and redeem points to get a sweet little bonus in your next bag (use the points to choose your own!). January 2015 ipsy Glam Bag Review & Swatches

The theme for the January 2015 ipsy Glam Bag is Fresh Start. Definitely an expected theme for the first month of a new year!

This month the bag is textured with white on one side and royal blue on the other. There is a contrasting orange zipper and dangly ipsy tag. I’m actually loving the bag this month, it doesn’t seem as immature as some of the other ones we’ve received in the last few years.

What’s inside?

From J. Cat Beauty, FANTABULOUS Gel Eye Liner. The shade I received is in Blue Black which I am super excited about because I just do not want another black eye liner lol This is a fabulous color when you want something more amped up than black and don’t want to go to crazy. The formula on this liner was smooth and easy to use, lasting all day!

From Manna Kadar Cosmetics, Sheer Glo. The shade included is described as a Universal Shade, but it does seem to lean warm. As it’s blended out it becomes a glowy golden peach. This will be lovely to use particularly in the Summer for a subtle highlight.

From Pacifica, Natural Mineral Coconut Eye Shadow. The shade I got is in Ethereal (others may receive the shade Treasure) and it’s a pearly cream shade – perfect for highlighting the eye or using at the inner corners. The formula is soft and nicely pigmented. Love this!

From Real Techniques, Fine Liner Brush. This is a wonderful product to get in this months bag and it paired perfectly with the gel liner! Real Techniques brushes are great quality and while this isn’t my favorite brush for applying liner (I like a firmer, slanted brush) I will definitely get use out of it.

From Nourish Organic, Renewing Eye Cream. This eye cream includes Argan oil and is said to provide rich hydration around the eyes. I can’t speak to long term benefits but it did feel nice and absorbed quickly. I wasn’t a fan of the scent but it’s not a deal breaker.

Also shown is a set of Nail Decals from Wrap Artist, which I turned in some of my ipsy points for. I haven’t used them yet but I have a few nail art ideas coming up that will hopefully work out & I can share them with you!

This month has a nice mix of fabulous makeup products – I really think that liner is going to be a new staple. This month was definitely worth the $10 I paid between that liner, the full size shadow and makeup brush.

Ipsy has profile pages, so here is mine. There is also a pretty decent referral program in place. You refer friends and redeem points to get a sweet little bonus in your next bag (use the points to choose your own!). December 2014 ipsy Glam Bag Review & Swatches

The theme for the December 2014 ipsy Glam Bag is You Are a Creative Genius. My first reaction? I KNOW, RIGHT?! 😉

This month the bag is black with fuchsia trim and a matching dangly heart from the zipper. So cute!

What’s inside?

From Tarte, Lights Camera Lashes 4-1 Mascara. This is a deluxe sample size of one of my fave mascaras (review). I love to layer this one with Milani Total Lash Cover!

From Beauty Without Cruelty, A.H.A. 3% Facial Cleanser. This cleanser was just okay. I can’t speak to how well it performs over time but it smells nice and my skin felt clean after use.

From Sexy Hair, 450° Blow Out Heat Defense Blow Dry Spray Mini. This actually worked great on my hair and didn’t make it look dirty or weighed down. I see a few people weren’t a fan of the scent but I found it to be fruity and really nice! Definitely a good product that I’d repurchase.

From NYX, Butter Lip Balm. Subscribers will receive one of four shades – mine is in Marshmallow. That isn’t the shade that I’d ever want my marshmallow to look like but it sure does feel amazing on and tastes yum. I’m not a fan of the color on my lips.. it sort of deadens the pigment and washes me out. (swatched below on the left side of the pic).

From CAILYN Cosmetics, Just Mineral Eye Polish. I love everything from Cailyn that I’ve tried and this shadow is no exception. The shade is called Orchid, which makes me think of purple, but this is more of a darker tan shimmer. It’s a gorgeous shimmer accent if you’re doing a lot of mattes. (swatched below on the right side of the pic).

This month has a nice mix of fabulous makeup products and one of my new fave hair products. The only kind of dud was the cleanser. It’ll get used, but it’s nothing I’d write home about. I definitely think it was worth the $10 I paid.

Last Minute Gift Guide // Beauty Edition

Press Sample/Affiliate Links

Zero hour. Christmas Eve. You forgot someone. I did it this year and I’m kicking myself hard in the you know where. Obviously you need to pick up something and you want it to be nice but it’s not necessarily going to be right off the recipients wish list. However, it also doesn’t have to be junky or thoughtless. This is now the time to get that pre-packaged gift set – and here are some of my faves from this season (a mix of beauty, bath, body… you name it – it’ll cover someone on your list):

IT Cosmetics. You can basically buy anything from this brand and it’s a winner. They have some beautiful gift sets including this Buki Brush Set* ($48.00, exclusive to QVC) as well as other limited holiday kits and brush kits (see more on Top 9 Luxury Beauty Buys).

Fresh. They are so on point with gift sets this year. Sugar Legends is my fave but if you have a skincare lover you need to get them The Mask Bar*($108, check in store for availability) or any of the other ones still available online. All are great products and a great value!

Murad. This brand hosts some of my favorite skincare products like the Clarifying Cleanser and Makeup Removal Wipes. Now they have a Youth Builder Bodycare Preview Kit*($18.00 // Murad) that I’m loving just as much as the skincare! The set is a great price and the perfect gift for a skincare lover.

BITE Beauty. If you love the Agave Lip Mask (which most all do) you’ll definitely want to gift yourself and those you forgot love with the Lip Love Kit($36.00 $25.00 // Sephora). This is currently on sale at Sephora for $25.00 (along with many other products) and you can get another 20% off of the sale price with code EXTRAROUGE (use it now if you’re VIB Rouge) or EXTRA20 (Dec 25-Jan1).

Also, subscription boxes are where it’s at. Everyone loves getting mail every single month and the boxes available cover all budgets and all genres. Here are some of my faves for beauty/fashion:

Have a Happy Holiday!

Top 9 Luxury Beauty Buys

Press Sample/Affiliate Links

Probably even more annoying that shopping for your SO is shopping for the girl (or guy, for that matter) that has every.damn.thing. Maybe it’s a friend or relative… or someone you pulled during a Secret Santa moment at the office. Regardless… that ish is rough. Here are a few ideas on what to buy for this person whether you’re on a budget or if money is no expense – luxury does not mean designer it just means awesome!

  1. My number one gift for the person who has everything is a monthly subscription box. For a lot of these you can purchase just one month, three, six or even the whole year. Making this budget friendly for just about everyone. Depending on your budget you have options so I’ll list them in order from least expensive to most expensive – ipsy ($10/month – reviews), Birchbox ($10/month – reviews), Beauty Box 5* ($12/month – reviews), Scentbird* ($14.95/month – reviews), Glossybox* ($21/month – reviews), Wantable ($36/month – reviews), POPSUGAR Must Have* ($39.95/month – reviews). There are obviously MANY, MANY more, but these are the ones I currently subscribe to and have the experience with. I’m hoping to hop on a few new ones for 2015! Any recs?
  2. High end makeup storage. For those with a high or unlimited budget consider the Sherrieblossom ICEbOX*. This is a makeup/beauty organizer that is made with only the finest acrylics. You can absolutely see the difference, especially in person. It holds up well, cleans easily and comes in several sizes. Check out mine here!
  3. Personalized Jewelry. Onecklace* offers personalized jewelry that comes in a beautiful gold box complete with an authenticity certificate. Not only is there currently a Christmas Sale going on, BUT you can also get 10% off of your order using code GIFT10! Check out mine on Instagram (or purchase your own here)!
  4. Personalized Nail Polish. It does exist. Pretty Please Nail Polish allows you to pick a shade and give it any name you desire! It’s only $12 a bottle but wouldn’t it be fun to call it Will You Marry Me or something to that effect? Ahhh… a bloggers beauty dream proposal 😉
  5. Candles. I’m not talking Yankee. I’m talking high-quality soy, organic goodness from right here in Pittsburgh (but you can order from anywhere in the US!). KTHOM Beauty offers seasonal and spa collections for only $18.00. Flat Rate shipping is only $2.00 which for a heavy candle is AMAZING.
  6. Specialty Bath & Body. It’s easy to walk into a Bath & Body works and grab something, but I’ve talked to many people that say that getting body care from there is very impersonal and makes them think that you forgot and needed something quick. If the person you’re buying for is into bath and body products consider A Girl’s Gotta Spa. Energizing Citrus Body Wash (8 oz. – $26), Energizing Citrus Body Lotion (8 oz. – $28), Energizing Citrus Salt Scrub (10 oz. – $35 only available on the website), Energizing Citrus 3-Piece Gift Set – $84 comes in a silver matte gift box tied with a guava colored ribbon so it is ready for gift giving. (only available on the website, $5 savings) All of the products have vegan ingredients, are 94-100% natural and certified cruelty free by Leaping Bunny. Best of all, they are incredibly hydrating and smell wonderful! (products are also available on Gloss48 and Amazon however if you purchase on the official website you get a 15% off code when you sign up for emails!).
  7. LUSH. Few things personally make me happier than a gift set from LUSH. There is one to suit every one in every single price range. You absolutely cannot go wrong. They’re Limited Edition so shop soon!
  8. Makeup Brushes. NO ONE has enough makeup brushes. IDC if you have a million, you need more. No one likes to wash them, so the more, the merrier. IT Cosmetics makes affordable sets of their 5 star brushes (shown in the main pic – Your Beautiful Basics* (3-piece Face & Eye Travel Brush Set $19.50) and Your Airbrush Masters* (6-piece Face & Eye Advanced Brush Set $65.00). You can get these sets plus a plethora of individual brushes at Ulta.
  9. Beauty Gifts that give back. Some brands partner with charities and devote a portion of product proceeds to a good cause. Laura Mercier Bonne Mine Palette($48), Lip Glacé in Peach Hope ($25) and Bracelet of Hope($35) all give 100% back to the Laura Mercier Ovarian Cancer Fund; Kiehl’s has released their 6th Annual Limited Edition Creme de Corps Holiday Collection where 100% of Kiehl’s net profits from this collection, up to $100,000, will benefit Feeding America.

Of course, in the end, it helps to know who you’re shopping for. Obviously, specialty lip balm isn’t going to be okay for someone who doesn’t like to put anything on their lips. In the age of the internet, it’s not hard to get to know who you’re shopping for. Go ahead and stalk a little on Facebook… I won’t tell.
