Top 10 Hair Masks for Oily Hair + How to Use Them!

Press Sample/Affiliate Links

Yes, your hair is oily. YES, you can still use hair masks! My hair gets oily 12 hours after I wash it (barely lasting a day) but I still treat my locks to a deep conditioning treatment once a week. Just because my scalp gets slick quick, doesn’t mean it doesn’t need love too!

How to use a hair mask when you have an oily scalp: When wearing a mask I apply beginning at the roots working up to the mid-length area (like where a low ponytail would begin), because that is the area that requires the most attention. I comb that through using a wide toothed comb and then comb all the excess product through my root area and down. After that, I simply follow the instructions on the packaging. Maybe it’s a 2 minute mask, maybe it’s 20. When it’s time to wash it out I always begin washing out the product at the roots, working my way down to the bottom.

Here are a few of my faves!!

  1. Phyrra Pretty Little Elixir ($15.99, Future Derm). I love that I can coat my hair top to bottom with this and it’s not oily or wet looking even after I’ve dried it. Sometimes when I OD on a hair mask that happens. This is currently on sale for $15.99 (down from $39.99) so stock up now!
  2. Aviva Hair Rescue ($32.95 for 7.0 oz, Aviva Hair)*. This is a Keratin Renewal Masque that is safe for color treated hair. My favorite part about this is that you only have to leave it on for 3 minutes (but up to 10, if you wish) and it still makes my hair look, feel and smell amazing. Yes, the scent is to die for… fruity but not overly so. The price is a bit higher than you might care for, but do note that there is a 30 day money back guarantee, which personally always makes me feel better about trying something new and spending the cash.
  3. LUSH R & B Hair Treatment ($22.95 for 3.5 oz, LUSH). Control the frizz, control the flyaways. This mask is fantastic for when I need my hair to be extra silky smooth (let’s face it, that’s all of the time).
  4. LUSH Shine So Bright ($9.95 for 0.4 oz, LUSH). I don’t know if I can really count this as a mask, but I love to work this into my split ends so I don’t need to get my hair trimmed as much. It’s a hair treatment that we all need in our bathroom!
  5. Novex Brazilian Keratin ($14.99 for 35.3 oz, Sally Beauty Supply). I got this in my August Beauty Box 5 and I am able to get several uses out of one packet. This is another one that keeps my hair smooth and silky. Did I mention it’s also super affordable?
  6. Agadir Argan Oil Moisture Mask ($14,63 for 1 pack at Amazon). This mask is amazing at making your hair not only look good, but also stop breaking (which I had major issues with when I went crazy blonde last year).
  7. Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment ($42.00 for 8 oz, Sephora). When I first used this mask my hair was in dire need of help from the Summer heat. The frizz is real, you guys. I love the No Frizz line of products and this mask falls right in with that collection as an HG hair item!
  8. OGX Quenched Sea Mineral Moisture Surge Treatment ($7.99 for 6.7 fl. oz, Ulta). When I bought the Sea Mineral Shampoo and Conditioner I picked up this treatment as well. It really makes my hair soft and manageable. The conditioner is so good that this treatment works along the same lines, but I like to use this better because the packaging is more user friendly. The conditioner bottle makes it hard to get product out, this type of squeeze tube is much easier!
  9. Neutrogena Deep Recovery Hair Mask ($7.99 for 6 oz, Ulta). I love this for my ends because they just get so dehydrated and almost dead looking. This mask is an inexpensive way to put softness and life back into them.
  10. Marc Anthony Oil of Morocco Deep Hydrating Conditioning Treatment ($2.99 for 1 pack, Ulta). This mask contains Argan Oil AND Keratin AND Grape Seed Oil for a saturating hair treatment. It’s basically a hair cure-all. I can’t use it weekly, but once a month I like to coat my ends in this and let it sit.

Top 10 Beauty Timesavers

Press Sample

We’re all busy. It’s okay, that’s life. But why should our outer beauty and skin suffer because we’re short on time? Your friendly neighborhood beauty bloggers are here to help you crunch those minutes, people – it’s time for the Top 10 Beauty Timesavers.

These are in no particular order:

  1. Makeup Wipes. This is truly the lazy girls way of removing makeup, and luckily there are some great wipes out there that remove makeup quickly and efficiently without harming your face (no rinsing required). Korres Pomegranate Cleansing & Make Up Removing Wipes* are awesome for oily/combination skin & Korres. Of course, you know if you’re super acne prone I definitely recommend the Cleansing Wipes from Murad. I also love Tarte Fresh Eyes Maracuja Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover Wipes
    for removing eye makeup.
  2. Spray SPF. Who has time to slather their entire body with layers of lotion? Not me. Not ever. However, I also don’t have time for cancer, wrinkles or other forms of sun related damage so I reach for an SPF that sprays. Usually I buy Banana Boat Sport but I’m not above using my kids stuff.
  3. Cabana Boy*. Oh, you want SPF on your back but can’t reach? No time to find a buddy or hot pool boy? Use My Cabana Boy. Well, not MINE, but get your own. This device makes it easy to spray your favorite SPF (Banana Boat, Coppertone, Neutrogena + more) on your back and other hard to reach areas. It was easy to load, easy to use and I never plan to be without it. Who needs a man, anyway 😉
  4. Dry Shampoo. I have no idea why, but my hair holds curl so much better if I have this in my hair. Some of my faves are by Christophe*, Tresemme, Dove and Batiste*. I finish up with Agadir Finishing Spray* and it’s all day waves.
  5. Infiniti Pro by Conair Curl Secret*. Amazing, uniform, perfect curls. Your hair stays gorgeous all day long and it doesn’t take all day to make it happen. Everyone should own one of these.
  6. IT Cosmetics Celebration Foundation*. You don’t need concealer, you don’t need liquid foundation… dust this on and it’s full coverage. End all be all of ALL BEAUTY PRODUCTS.
  7. Nail Wraps. There are so many out there, but not all are created equal. INNI Nails is a new company to the US and you can actually turn any picture into your nail design. Just snap a photo (even with your iPhone!) and create it over on the INNI Nails website. Scratch Nail Wraps also has an awesome monthly subscription program and their nail wraps are unique & amazing as well! I also love wraps from Sally Hansen, which are easy to pick up at the drug store..
  8. Fast Dry Top Coats. Seche Vite is a big love, but it doesn’t work well for some people. I also have been loving Wicked Fast from Cult Nails.
  9. Tinted Moisturizer. You can moisturize and hide some crappy mccrappy-ness on your face. Laura Mercier has a popular one with SPF 20, Jouer Golden Luminizing Moisture Tint, and Beauty Addicts Mineral Sheer Tint* – also with an SPF of 20 but mineral based.
  10. Liquid Lipstick. It’s a gloss, it’s a lipstick. BOOM. If you’re really short on time use a nude shade, but if you have a few extra minutes of course reach for that red. I’m loving L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Extraordinaire Liquid Lipstick in Nude Ballet.

Makeup Wars – My Beauty Diary

Affiliate Links

This week for Makeup Wars we decided to do a beauty diary. Basically a “my day in beauty”. I tried to be diligent in writing down what I was using all day, so hopefully I don’t forget anything! Here’s what happens to my face, bod & hair throughout the day (beauty wise!).

Good morning!
I wake up around 7-8am (God willing, sometimes insomnia visits and that becomes around 3am). After my son is out the door I hop in the shower and hit my mug with Murad Clarifying Cleanser and my Clarisonic. I also like to use a lip scrub from LUSH. Currently I’m still using Santa Baby from Christmas. Once or twice a week I exfoliate my face with Kate Somerville ExfoliKate. For the bod I’ve been using Dove Pistachio Cream with Magnolia Body Wash & Body Bar. When shaving happens I generally use Schick Hydro Silk and Skintimate Shave Gel. Hair gets the AMAZE-BALLS OGX Sea Mineral Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner. I haven’t even been using a hair mask once a week, because the OGX is that good.

Out of the bathroom I start by applying Kate Somerville Anti-Bac Acne Treatment Lotion all over my face. Then I apply a spray lotion all over my body – something like the Vaseline Spray & Go or St. Ives Fresh Hydration Spray. The hair gets a generous hit of Living Proof No Frizz Styling Cream (starting at the ends and putting very little at the crown) and Agadir Argan Oil at the ends. My fave perfume is Chanel Chance EDT but lately I’m also reaching for Chloe Roses de Chloe.

In the interest of saving time I’ll just go through my daily makeup routine when I’m not actually going anywhere but the store or to pick the kids up from school. Generally (unless something is being tested) I start with the eyes and apply Urban Decay Primer Potion. MAC Utterly Becoming Paint Pot is an excellent base for all things eye balls and on top of that I go easy with Urban Decay Naked Basics or Hourglass Suede Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo. Lately I’ve been getting at my brows with Vincent Longo Eyebrow Micro Pencil and NARS Oural Brow Gel. For a liner I reach for something neutral like Marc Jacobs Ro(Cocoa), Urban Decay Hustle or MUFE Aqua Eyes in 24L. Mascara is usually IT Cosmetics Tightline and/or Milani Total Lash Cover. Face Makeup is IT Cosmetics Celebration Foundation, IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye/Hello Light Liquid Brightener and IT Cosmetics Full Coverage CC+ Cream. On the cheeks I’m using NARS Olympia for contouring and one of the six Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blushes. For my lips, when it’s just an easy day like this, it’s always some sort of sheer-semi sheer gloss like my current fave YSL Gloss Volupte in Golden (20).

Through the day…
During the day I usually just touch up as needed. Generally that just means a dusting of IT Cosmetics Celebration Foundation on the nose and reapplying gloss. More often than not, though, I just end up slicking on Jack Black Lip Balm (of which I’m obsessed with).

Nighty Night!
The makeup removal process is quick for me. I remove my eye makeup with MAC Gently Off Eye & Lip Remover. My makeup is removed by using Murad Clarifying Cleanser & the Clarisonic. Lately I’ve been obsessively staring at wrinkles by my eyes, so I start out my skincare regime with Le Metier de Beaute Revive Eye Concentrate and then I smooth on StriVectin SD Advanced. Because that isn’t moisturizing enough for me in the evening I also use Kate Somerville Oil-Free Moisturizer. I can’t fall asleep with dry lips so I always dab on a bit of LUSH Honey Trap Lip Balm. I also check for stray eye brow hairs that managed to pop up and get at them with my Tweezerman Tweezers.

After all of that I settle down to watch a show and slather on some LUSH Lemony Flutter & pop on my gloves.

I seriously didn’t feel high maintenance about myself until I wrote this post. Tell me I’m not alone!

7 Holiday Gifts for the Hair Junkie!

Press Sample/Affiliate Links

She… (or he) is obsessed with her (his!) hair. So wtf do you even begin to give them for the holidays? I have a short list of a few of my faves as well as some great gift ideas for the Hair Junkie in your life!

  1. Living Proof Frizz Collection. This has long been my favorite line of hair care, and is absolutely necessary for me to use in the Summer and humid months. I use the Styling Cream year round as well! These Travel Kits make perfect gifts!
  2. Kai. This high-end brand has a line of 16 fragrance, bath & body and home items that are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates & phosphates. If you already know your recipient loves this, the full-sized shampoo and conditioner is a winner. Their travel kit is also fabulous, under $50 and contains smaller sizes of the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bathing bubbles, body lotion and a small vial of fragrance… all wrapped up in a clear travel bag!
  3. Verb. I have so many faves from this brand. A new item they have out is the Dry Shampoo, which is a powder that is perfect for refreshing your hair and boosting body.
  4. Batiste. If you’re more into the aerosol version of dry shampoo application, definitely check out this one. I have major oil happening at the roots and this does a great job keeping that at bay.
  5. NuNaat. For those with unruly curls or frizz the Brazilian Keratin collection is wonderful. Make sure you use the shampoo and conditioner to extend the life of the style.
  6. Agadir Argan Oil. All Argan Oils are not created equal, and the line from Agadir is definitely one of the best I’ve tried!
  7. Infinity Pro by Conair Curl Secret. Insane amounts of awesome, this curler actually works! It takes a sec to get used to, but it’s really the easiest way to get perfect and uniform curls.

Let’s keep the holiday hair ideas flowing! What is your favorite hair product?

Makeup Wars ~ Favorite Oil Featuring Agadir Argan Oil

Press Sample

Confession. I really haven’t been one to jump on the whole Argan Oil thing. The roots of my hair get extremely greasy without the help of extra oils, and it seems even if I only apply a little at the ends it travels up and settles in my roots. Reverse gravity is something very real when it comes to hair.

Although skeptical, I had heard great things about the Agadir Argan Oil line. Rave reviews from other bloggers, actually. It’s because of this that I gave the products a go, and haven’t looked back.

These products are fabulous. No grease-ball head, just smooth and silky goodness. Even the ends of my hair looked nourished. After just one use of the shampoo ($20.00)/conditioner ($21.00) set I noticed a difference and the hair treatment oil ($25.00) is better than any other I’ve used. With the finishing spray you have to be careful not to over-use, but it really aids in holding the style and beating the stuffing out of humidity. I am in love, lust… enamored… somebody hold me up.

Obviously, I’ve learned my lesson. Not all Argan Oils are created equal and when you find the one that’s right for you it will be amazing!
