Yes, your hair is oily. YES, you can still use hair masks! My hair gets oily 12 hours after I wash it (barely lasting a day) but I still treat my locks to a deep conditioning treatment once a week. Just because my scalp gets slick quick, doesn’t mean it doesn’t need love too!
How to use a hair mask when you have an oily scalp: When wearing a mask I apply beginning at the roots working up to the mid-length area (like where a low ponytail would begin), because that is the area that requires the most attention. I comb that through using a wide toothed comb and then comb all the excess product through my root area and down. After that, I simply follow the instructions on the packaging. Maybe it’s a 2 minute mask, maybe it’s 20. When it’s time to wash it out I always begin washing out the product at the roots, working my way down to the bottom.
Here are a few of my faves!!
Phyrra Pretty Little Elixir ($15.99, Future Derm). I love that I can coat my hair top to bottom with this and it’s not oily or wet looking even after I’ve dried it. Sometimes when I OD on a hair mask that happens. This is currently on sale for $15.99 (down from $39.99) so stock up now!
Aviva Hair Rescue ($32.95 for 7.0 oz, Aviva Hair)*. This is a Keratin Renewal Masque that is safe for color treated hair. My favorite part about this is that you only have to leave it on for 3 minutes (but up to 10, if you wish) and it still makes my hair look, feel and smell amazing. Yes, the scent is to die for… fruity but not overly so. The price is a bit higher than you might care for, but do note that there is a 30 day money back guarantee, which personally always makes me feel better about trying something new and spending the cash.
LUSH R & B Hair Treatment ($22.95 for 3.5 oz, LUSH). Control the frizz, control the flyaways. This mask is fantastic for when I need my hair to be extra silky smooth (let’s face it, that’s all of the time).
LUSH Shine So Bright ($9.95 for 0.4 oz, LUSH). I don’t know if I can really count this as a mask, but I love to work this into my split ends so I don’t need to get my hair trimmed as much. It’s a hair treatment that we all need in our bathroom!
Novex Brazilian Keratin ($14.99 for 35.3 oz, Sally Beauty Supply). I got this in my August Beauty Box 5 and I am able to get several uses out of one packet. This is another one that keeps my hair smooth and silky. Did I mention it’s also super affordable?
Agadir Argan Oil Moisture Mask ($14,63 for 1 pack at Amazon). This mask is amazing at making your hair not only look good, but also stop breaking (which I had major issues with when I went crazy blonde last year).
Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment ($42.00 for 8 oz, Sephora). When I first used this mask my hair was in dire need of help from the Summer heat. The frizz is real, you guys. I love the No Frizz line of products and this mask falls right in with that collection as an HG hair item!
OGX Quenched Sea Mineral Moisture Surge Treatment ($7.99 for 6.7 fl. oz, Ulta). When I bought the Sea Mineral Shampoo and Conditioner I picked up this treatment as well. It really makes my hair soft and manageable. The conditioner is so good that this treatment works along the same lines, but I like to use this better because the packaging is more user friendly. The conditioner bottle makes it hard to get product out, this type of squeeze tube is much easier!
Neutrogena Deep Recovery Hair Mask ($7.99 for 6 oz, Ulta). I love this for my ends because they just get so dehydrated and almost dead looking. This mask is an inexpensive way to put softness and life back into them.
Marc Anthony Oil of Morocco Deep Hydrating Conditioning Treatment ($2.99 for 1 pack, Ulta). This mask contains Argan Oil AND Keratin AND Grape Seed Oil for a saturating hair treatment. It’s basically a hair cure-all. I can’t use it weekly, but once a month I like to coat my ends in this and let it sit.

We’re all busy. It’s okay, that’s life. But why should our outer beauty and skin suffer because we’re short on time? Your friendly neighborhood beauty bloggers are here to help you crunch those minutes, people – it’s time for the Top 10 Beauty Timesavers.
Spray SPF. Who has time to slather their entire body with layers of lotion? Not me. Not ever. However, I also don’t have time for cancer, wrinkles or other forms of sun related damage so I reach for an SPF that sprays. Usually I buy Banana Boat Sport but I’m not above using my kids stuff.
Cabana Boy*. Oh, you want SPF on your back but can’t reach? No time to find a buddy or hot pool boy? Use My Cabana Boy. Well, not MINE, but get your own. This device makes it easy to spray your favorite SPF (Banana Boat, Coppertone, Neutrogena + more) on your back and other hard to reach areas. It was easy to load, easy to use and I never plan to be without it. Who needs a man, anyway 😉
Dry Shampoo. I have no idea why, but my hair holds curl so much better if I have this in my hair. Some of my faves are by Christophe*, Tresemme, Dove and Batiste*. I finish up with Agadir Finishing Spray* and it’s all day waves.
Infiniti Pro by Conair Curl Secret*. Amazing, uniform, perfect curls. Your hair stays gorgeous all day long and it doesn’t take all day to make it happen. Everyone should own one of these.
IT Cosmetics Celebration Foundation*. You don’t need concealer, you don’t need liquid foundation… dust this on and it’s full coverage. End all be all of ALL BEAUTY PRODUCTS.
Nail Wraps. There are so many out there, but not all are created equal. INNI Nails is a new company to the US and you can actually turn any picture into your nail design. Just snap a photo (even with your iPhone!) and create it over on the INNI Nails website. Scratch Nail Wraps also has an awesome monthly subscription program and their nail wraps are unique & amazing as well! I also love wraps from Sally Hansen, which are easy to pick up at the drug store..
Fast Dry Top Coats. Seche Vite is a big love, but it doesn’t work well for some people. I also have been loving Wicked Fast from Cult Nails.
Tinted Moisturizer. You can moisturize and hide some crappy mccrappy-ness on your face. Laura Mercier has a popular one with SPF 20, Jouer Golden Luminizing Moisture Tint, and Beauty Addicts Mineral Sheer Tint* – also with an SPF of 20 but mineral based.
This week for Makeup Wars we decided to do a beauty diary. Basically a “my day in beauty”. I tried to be diligent in writing down what I was using all day, so hopefully I don’t forget anything! Here’s what happens to my face, bod & hair throughout the day (beauty wise!).
Through the day… During the day I usually just touch up as needed. Generally that just means a dusting of IT Cosmetics Celebration Foundation on the nose and reapplying gloss. More often than not, though, I just end up slicking on Jack Black Lip Balm (of which I’m obsessed with).
She… (or he) is obsessed with her (his!) hair. So wtf do you even begin to give them for the holidays? I have a short list of a few of my faves as well as some great gift ideas for the Hair Junkie in your life!
Living Proof Frizz Collection. This has long been my favorite line of hair care, and is absolutely necessary for me to use in the Summer and humid months. I use the Styling Cream year round as well! These Travel Kits make perfect gifts!
Kai. This high-end brand has a line of 16 fragrance, bath & body and home items that are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates & phosphates. If you already know your recipient loves this, the full-sized shampoo and conditioner is a winner. Their travel kit is also fabulous, under $50 and contains smaller sizes of the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bathing bubbles, body lotion and a small vial of fragrance… all wrapped up in a clear travel bag!
Verb. I have so many faves from this brand. A new item they have out is the Dry Shampoo, which is a powder that is perfect for refreshing your hair and boosting body.
Batiste. If you’re more into the aerosol version of dry shampoo application, definitely check out this one. I have major oil happening at the roots and this does a great job keeping that at bay.
NuNaat. For those with unruly curls or frizz the Brazilian Keratin collection is wonderful. Make sure you use the shampoo and conditioner to extend the life of the style.
Agadir Argan Oil. All Argan Oils are not created equal, and the line from Agadir is definitely one of the best I’ve tried!
Infinity Pro by Conair Curl Secret. Insane amounts of awesome, this curler actually works! It takes a sec to get used to, but it’s really the easiest way to get perfect and uniform curls.
Let’s keep the holiday hair ideas flowing! What is your favorite hair product?
Confession. I really haven’t been one to jump on the whole Argan Oil thing. The roots of my hair get extremely greasy without the help of extra oils, and it seems even if I only apply a little at the ends it travels up and settles in my roots. Reverse gravity is something very real when it comes to hair.
Although skeptical, I had heard great things about the Agadir Argan Oil line. Rave reviews from other bloggers, actually. It’s because of this that I gave the products a go, and haven’t looked back.
These products are fabulous. No grease-ball head, just smooth and silky goodness. Even the ends of my hair looked nourished. After just one use of the shampoo ($20.00)/conditioner ($21.00) set I noticed a difference and the hair treatment oil ($25.00) is better than any other I’ve used. With the finishing spray you have to be careful not to over-use, but it really aids in holding the style and beating the stuffing out of humidity. I am in love, lust… enamored… somebody hold me up.
Obviously, I’ve learned my lesson. Not all Argan Oils are created equal and when you find the one that’s right for you it will be amazing!
