Where Have I Been? Beauty Blogger MIA!

October is such a busy month!!!

Not only is it “Birthday Season” in this family (my son, my hubby, my mom, and a bunch of cousins) we’ve also been SO SICK here!  At the beginning of the month we all had that flu that everyone seemed to have, now my daughter and I are battling walking pneumonia (her) and bronchitis (me).  It’s wearing us out!  We didn’t even decorate for Halloween other than go get pumpkins that we didn’t carve!

So, yes, the blog has suffered.  Boo.  I’m trying to get up what I can, when I can.  Luckily I had a few things saved.

Anyway, I’m not going anywhere!  Just trying to get my rest on as much as possible and heal up.  Next month is going to be busy as well with my birthday, some travel, and the etc ;) AND, of course, Thanksgiving!

I hope you’re all doing well and keeping away from all of this sickness that seems to be plaguing everyone.

To close, I’ll leave you with a family photo (I never do this but I thought, whatever lol) from my sons birthday party.  He’s 6 years old now! Where did the time go?!  And does anyone have tips on how to get your kid to keep his eyes open in a photo?!  He never does!

Myla

Hey, everyone!

I’m at the bridal shower all day today, but I thought I’d post a pic really quickly of the newest addition to our family – Myla!

Her full name is Duchess Myla May – in this pic she’s 10 weeks old and completely exhausted from playing with the kids all day. She is SUCH a cuddler and has become instant best friends with my son.

We’re very excited to welcome Myla into the family ;)

Gymboree Haulage

Inspired by Emily at Wife Check, Mom Check, Now What – I took the late coming $25 in Gymbucks that I had and shopped the Gymboree sale. It’s addicting, I tell you.

Here is the haul:

The 2 tee-shirts are from the Poppy Love line. In hindsight, if I wanted to emulate Emily, I should have bought them in a 2T so Lydia could get some wear out of them next year as well. (that sizing issue is my only regret!)
The long sleeved white onesie is so she can get some more wear out of her t-shirts and dresses this Fall and maybe winter.
The green top and leggings set is from the Cowgirls At Heart line. Totally cute.

The entire haul came to $28.21 (or roughly $5.64 a piece). Pretty good for me! Normally I get side tracked by the full priced shinies and end up REALLY blowing $$ on stuff that will be on sale in a month lol

I owe it all to Emily ;) However. haha always a BUT. I loved that Poppy Love line SO much that I bought a couple more things on evil-bay. Some were bought with Buy It Now and weren’t full price retail, but some I sniped last minute and got for a pretty good deal. I’m still in search of the matching black with white polka dot shoes in a size 5. It’s like looking for a Unicorn! =\

Whatsa Goin’ On?

(pics are clickable)

Hey there peoples! I see I have a couple of new followers! HOOTIE HOOOOO! LOL I love it love it love it!! You all ROCK!

Anyway, I’ve been pretty absent this week. This week Owen started SWIMMING lessons (I know right? He’s going to be FOUR… can’t even believe it) and he also started Sporties For Shorties… where the little kiddies go in and learn about sports and how to play all of them. He’s a champ ;)

Our house has also been undergoing some drastic construction changes. Ladies and gentleman… we have a ROOF! Well… almost. The shell of a roof lol The roof will hit completion NEXT week. Anyway, I thought I’d use this post to bring everyone up to date on construction (beginning to now) – don’t worry, I will NOT bombard you with pics! Just a few shots here and there to show what we’ve been up to out here in good ol’ picksburg! haha

There were A LOT of little in between things that were done, but this will give a nice run down and give you the general idea of how much it takes to build an addition on a house. (A sturdy one, anyway. You know these guys told us that they had to go into a certain company’s home that was built – they build A LOT of homes and quickly but I’m not naming names – and basically COMPLETELY redo it. So for those of you looking to move into a plan of homes that were seemingly built over night…. PLEASE do your research first! This home was not even 10 years old and it was FALLING APART!)

We are adding on to the kitchen (Thank, God), building a Master bedroom with a nice size closet and master bath. The master bath isn’t getting finished, because I want something obnoxious. So it’ll have to be done in stages lol

What we started with:

This is the back of my house. That tree was just HUGE and totally rotted inside… can you believe that guy is just standing up there cutting it down? Yikes. Anyway, he trimmed it up to make way for Jeff’s Uncle John to rip it out.

Bye, Bye Tree:

Digging the footer:

That line in the last photo is the water line, which was eventually re-routed… DH is in the orange and his cousin Johnny is in the bright yellow. At this point it was still a family affair of work!

The contractor & his men arrive to start laying out the basement:

The footer is poured, smoothed and gravelled:

The super block layers bust hump and put up the basement walls in 2 days:

The contractor comes back to start laying out for the house:

between this point and the previous point of block laying was about 3 weeks. I was going CRAZY. I’m extremely Type A and couldn’t figure out why nothing was happening. This is a common occurance, from what I understand, in construction!

Laying the Floor:

Ripping off old siding:

(This wall will eventually be completely knocked out to make way for a bigger kitchen! YES!)

Framing up:

(oh, look, it’s DH! lol)

And that brings us to where we are today.

In between all this was the pouring of the patio and basement floors, filling in around the outside (aka the moat you see in a few of the pics), re-routing of the water line… the boring stuff ;) This past week they framed up the roof and next week we’re due to get the new roof put on. I think I’m going to start updating on the house once a week, just so the posts won’t be this long from now on ;) Thanks for bearing with me, if you got this far! lol

PS – for the hecks of it, here are samples of what our new kitchen cabinets, counters and hardware will look like, as well as what we picked out for roof and siding. Trim will be white.

My Thoughts On Childbirth, Kids…and the Experts

Today I met up with a friend I’ve had since 7th grade. She was talking to me about child carrying/birthing/raising. She’s a little anxious about it. It got me thinking and I want to release on it lol so here is a break in our regularly scheduled blogs on makeup, nail polish and shopping for a little girl talk.

My points here are general, they aren’t going to be 100% on point with everyones lifestyle, but thats what the comments section is for!

Here is my view on it. There is NOTHING in life that is going to be 100% fool proof. Everything has it’s ups and downs and you just need to take it and roll. If you want kids, have em. If there isn’t one iota of want in your body, then don’t. Don’t let anyone decide FOR you. It’s your body.

My thoughts:

Carrying the baby and the child birth are the easy parts. Healing from the whole ordeal is the worst part. I loveddddd being preggo.

With my first I was SOOOO sick. I actually lost 20 pounds in the first 5 months. Everything under the sun was used to try and help with the sickness. Organic, Wives tales, prescription SUPPOSITORIES (yes I went there)…. We found out it was because of the prenatal vitamins. I switched to Flinstones Vitamins twice a day and was fine. The rest of my pregnancy, thankfully, had no other complications. I swolled up a lot, but was fine. I craved steak, potatoes, pizza, orange soda, cereal (Lucky Charms!).

Owen came 2 weeks early. I had no painful contractions. I actually had to FAKE them to get admitted at the hospital. (FYI I had a REALLY bad experience at the first hospital we went to, the second one (MAGEE) was a dream) Before they checked me out they were already talking about sending me home… til they did their feel around and saw I was 5 cm dilated and 100% effaced. “You’re having this baby today.”

I say take the drugs. I’m terrified of needles and pain in general. The epidural was nothing. You’ll be ok. I’ve hidden behind chairs and plants from nurses with needles (at a lot older of an age than I care to admit), and I did not even tear up at the epi.

I did have my son that day. And he came out ripping me apart (literally). I got stitched up and sent home with a weeks worth of percocet. FOR EIGHT WEEKS I was in MAJOR pain. After your week of perks they give you Darvocet. Don’t even waste your time taking that. It doesn’t help. (BIG TIP, the hospital will have pads for your bleeding that double as ice packs. TAKE AS MANY HOME AS YOU CAN. Don’t feel bad, your insurance is paying for this all anyway, so regardless you’ll be charged whether or not you take them). I’ve been offered Darvocet by a Dr. for a different reason afterwards and I laughed at them. I call them fake pills. You’re better off taking an extra strength Tylenol. Anyway, I sat on a breast feeding pillow for those 8 weeks and couldn’t even do a #2 for over a week. I DO feel a lot of my discomfort came because of the hospital I went to. They were pretty careless and, with the exception of my Doctor and 1 nurse, I don’t recommend ANY one that I came into contact with there.

With my second child I tried the pre-natals and started to feel the nausea again after a week. I immediately switched to the Flinstones. No puking. I had the easiest pregnancy with Lydia and got A LOT bigger with her. I was a moose. No swelling or sickness though. I craved mostly fruit and chocolate.

Lydia also came 2 weeks early. I had a lot more Braxton Hicks with her, but still nothing too painful. They actually induced me because I was kind of hitting that point and ready to go, but normally they’d have sent me home.. except for the blizzard outside. So I walked around for about a day and then at the wee hours I was induced. It was ok though, Magee Women’s Hospital has some awesomeeeeee food. Which I wasn’t allowed to enjoy until AFTER I gave birth, but Jeff did lol I adored everyone there and I didn’t tear with Lydia!! WOOT! However… I was still getting horrible cramping a week later and clotting a lot… the did an ultrasound and I still had some stuffs floating around. Eventually it passed but they do have to remove it if not.

We never took birthing or parenting classes with either kid. Friends told us they were worthless. I never even changed a diaper before my kids. We were fine and were happy we didn’t waste the money. Always your choice though! All we signed up for was a free tour of the hospital and really I only wanted to do that to peek at the new babies lol Plus they give you tips on how to get free parking and all that.

A few other points:

Have em early. The older you and your signifcant other (SO) become, the more likely your child could have something wrong. It’s not just YOUR age that’s a factor, ladies… it’s SO’s too! I was one of those crazies who bought a medical book when I was pregnant. I didn’t want to read “what to expect when you’re expecting”. TBH I flipped through it, and it’s ridiculous. I wanted the straight-forward-no-holds- barred-heres-whats-going-down book. If somethings wrong with my kid, I don’t want 5 professionals to have to come in to explain it to me, I want to just KNOW.

And seriously.. my kids are SO active and … well…. crazy.. lol that there is no WAY I could chase a little on around if I was older. I’m a fatty. We don’t run.

Money. Most people will get help from family and friends. Not everyone, but there are ways around the huge costs. There are countless blogs, websites, foundations… help IS out there. You just have to look. I love to go to mamapedia.com to ask questions, get advice… plus if you join a mommy group you have a nice outlet plus those moms are always willing to share/donate time, advice, formula, strollers… you name it!

You’ll likely get a baby shower. Register. There are things the experts SAY you need that you aren’t going to need. Take a friend with you that has a couple kids to get it narrowed down. It’ll save you money like no other. We didn’t have to buy diapers for the first year after we had our son.

Go to a place like Sams Club or CosCo to get the diapers and formula. You’ll save a ton.

DO NOT buy things like cribs, car seats, strollers… etc from a yard sale. You have no idea if the items were recalled or were even fixed properly if they WERE recalled. However, you CAN buy these things at Once Upon a Child (kids stuff reseller – locally I know of one in Monroeville PA) because they have to have proof of the recall being fixed or they can’t accept the item.

The experts. Sometimes I feel these experts talk out of their ass. Some stuff they say is valid. But after a year of trying it “their way” aka “the right way” I came to realize that there IS no right way, there is only the way that works for YOU.

I’m a stay at home mom with 2 kids. Owen will be 4 in October 2010 and Lydia will be 2 in February 2011. I wear yoga pants/capris everyday and rarely is my hair dried, styled or worn down. I usually have food, spit, drink… crap… you name it… somewhere on my person and don’t know it. I dye my hair because it’s seriously gone grayyyyyyy in the past few years. I blame hubby and kiddies ;) 9 times out of 10 if I go out for lunch, dinner, or really any reason at all… my kids are with me. Which is a little annoying =\ I’m not gonna lie… they will run your life a bit but you need to control that straight on. I am fortunate to have parents on both ends that are willing to babysit every once in awhile, though we’re careful not to take advantage of that.

Would I change anything? Not for the WORLD.

PS ~ Thanks for listening. I could go ON and ON about so many different points… there are just so many areas in having kids. If you want to leave a comment and discuss any sort of area or aspect about kids, or even message me privately please do!! My writing is probably erratic because my son is singing along to Hi-5 as I type and I’m singing too lol

I’m sorry if anything was offensive and I’m sure I missed a few things. Like I said, these are just my thoughts and what works for me in my situation. We all have our views, and I’d love to hear yours expressed (politely) in the comments.

My name is Brooke and I’m here all night. ;)

Family Visit!

So we got home on Sunday and on Monday just lounged. A vacation with kids is just not a vacation for the adults so Jeff and I took turns napping lol.

Tuesday my Mom’s side of the family came over for a visit. We don’t get to see them much either, since they live in Ohio. Plus my little (ok, not so little) cousin Chelsea is going into her 4th year at Miami University of Ohio. Ridiculous. I’m so old.

They came for a late lunch/early dinner and hung out until early evening. I wanted to share some great pics we got and give a shout out to Grandpa George, Mama Luann, Aunt Sheryl and Chelsea! There are no pics shown of my mom, because she hated them all lol

Back From Vacation

Back from vacation and it was a BLAST seeing so many of my family members. My Dad’s side does this every other year where everyone gets together for a long weekend at a different location. We’re pretty much ALL over the US and have been as far away as Vegas (I’m in PA!).

This year we went to Oglebay (located about 90 minutes from me in West Virginia) and it was just absolutely breathtaking. We set a tent up on the bed and Jeff and Owen camped out every night lol there were butterflies EVERYWHERE and lots of fun things planned.

Here is a huge group shot of my entire family (that could attend) and my core family.

and of course a shot of a butterfly at the resort because I was just in LOVE!

We spent most of our time at family planned activities, but they have so many things there like horseback riding, paddle boats, a light show, golf, spa… something for everyone! We did get a chance to go to the Good Zoo. It’s a small zoo but they have a petting zoo area for the kids and some really cool animals.

I hope you guys all had a great weekend too (and are going to have a great one coming up!) – be prepared for a couple posts today and a special treat tomorrow ;)

Wedding Weekend

Hey everyone!!! Hope you all had a fab weekend! I sure did =)

We went to a family wedding, where my mom was the Maid of Honor!!!

She looks GORGEOUS… obviously ;)

Here is a pic of the beautiful bride and groom:

I’ve seriously NEVER seen a more happy bride! She was literally glowing, and not just from the 100 degree heat. Debbie beamed from ear to ear throughout the entire ceremony. It’s so refreshing to see people in love, getting married, and they are 100% SURE that this is what they want. Magic!

The wedding took place at the Atrium… which was SO beautiful. The setting was so romantic and the food was wonderful!

This is one of my favorite pics of the evening. It’s the most angellic beautiful pic of the flower girl, Debbie’s daughter Kassy.
I put it on photobucket and played around with it. Blurred the edges and cropped it a bit…

What would the evening be without a pic of the GORGEOUS wedding cake:

I also decided to post a pic of Jeff and I at the wedding, we rarely can get shots of us together than we like lol:

To cap off the night we have a pic of Uncle Greg making a fast getaway!
For this I used the cartoon feature on photobucket… cause it’s fun.
