Makeup Wars – 8 Ways to Hide Flaws & Illuminate Your Face

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! This week’s Makeup Wars is all about being glowy. Illuminating, if you will. Some of these help to conceal, but for the most part I like to use them to give the illusion of brightness/being awake and all “no, I don’t suffer from insomnia at all”.

8 Ways to Hide Flaws Illuminate Makeup WarsIn no particular order….

1. Dior Nail Glow. I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed this yet! I’ve had it for a year and am obsessed with it. Running out the door and need a mani but have no time for a mani? You can slap this on so fast and it adds a rosy tint to your nails leaving them shiny and healthy looking.

2. IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye/Hello Light Liquid Brightener Dual End Concealer. A mouthful… but this is the real deal for hiding the evil that is the under eye area… especially after a night of St. Patrick’s Day festivities (hint hint – everyone knows you were out because of what you posted on Instagram, you can still look like a million bucks the next morning with this stuff).

3. NARS Light Reflecting Loose Setting Powder. I dust this setting powder over my face makeup to help keep it flawless throughout the day, but one of my favorite things about it is that it contains light-active micro-prisms that optically fade wrinkles, pores.. all that bad stuff. There is also a pressed form of this but reviews said that the loose gives more of a matte finish and I’m all about that. Cream wise I love the Copacabana Highlighter that I got in a Sephora VIB gift!

4. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush. Hourglass has some excellent Ambient Lighting Powders (see Mood Glow) but my heart lies with their Ambient Lighting Blushes. I got my hands on Luminous Flush during a VIB preview, then when the shades launched I bought up the rest of them. You’ll be seeing them very soon!

5. MAC Grain Eye Shadow. This eye shadow has been my go-to highlight shade for years. If I get a palette that doesn’t have a shade to highlight or blend a crease out with (which happens way more often than I like) I always add this in.

6. Tarte Champagne. I first used this highlighter when I got the Tarte for Aqualillies Palette last year. I use it all over – cheeks, eyes, anywhere I need a bit of brightness or deflection.

7. Benefit Rockateur Powder Blush. This cheek powder is rose gold and may be highlighter only status for some, but it’s the perfect blush for me! I also enjoy using Watt’s Up and am currently working my way through a pile of sample sizes I’ve acquired!

and finally…

8. Eat well. I’m really guilty of not doing this one. I just started back up (I see you coming, Summer) and it’s been refreshing. I have more energy, my skin looks better and brighter, I get more done… it’s just all around a fabulous feeling inside that radiates outward in your appearance!

  9. Laura Mercier Illuminating Eye Colour in Rose Gold – This is more of a “to be reviewed” because I just ordered it from the Sephora Sale on Sale.  I lusted this like crazy when it released but by the time I convinced myself to order it wasn’t around.  I considered myself ridiculously lucky that I saw it on sale online at Sephora and then got an extra 20% off on top of that!
  10. MAC RiRi Hearts M·A·C Holiday Cosmetic Bag – Not really so much a beauty “product” but it holds lots of beauty products!  I ordered this sight unseen, unsure of how good the quality would be or if I’d even like it.  I love it!  The quilted fabric feels plush and it’s a definitely win.  Review to come!

Benefit Instant Brow Pencil & Gimme Brow Swatches & Review

I’m unofficially naming these two products the dynamic duo.  Benefit Gimme Brow in Light/Medium and Benefit Instant Brow Pencil in Light to Medium saved my face.  How?  Well, I recently went very blonde.  LOTS of highlights later, my brows were way too dark.  I ran off in search of a lighter shade to fill in my brows and while I was perusing the shelves of Sephora I remembered a video from Raeview where she sang the praises of both of these Benefit products.

IMG_2332 IMG_2335 IMG_2833The Instant Brow Pencil ($20.00) is available in three shades.  I chose the lightest shade which is light to medium.  The shade of this pencil is perfect for what I needed and is waxy enough to groom the brows easily without making them look heavy.  Because this pencil is more waxy than not I suggest filling in a bit, then brushing through with the spooly side.  Keep doing that as you go through the whole brow and you’ll have perfection at the end!

The Gimme Brow ($22.00) gel is only available in two shades, so I also chose light/medium in this one.  As far as formulas go it’s your general, water-resistant tinted brow gel.  The brush is what makes it special.  It’s a teeny tiny tapered spool brush, which makes it easy to fill in my thin brows and not get extra gel product anywhere that it shouldn’t be, thus ruining my eye look.  This product kept my brows looking tamed and groomed all day.

I’ll probably actually keep up with these shades for awhile.  I’m keeping the hair light but thinking of lacing some caramel through in a month or so.  My other brow pencils will likely still be too dark to go back to just yet.

What are your thoughts on this duo?

Makeup Wars – 7 Products for a 5 Minute Face

At some point, you’ve needed a 5 minute face.  Maybe you woke up late, maybe you forgot that you needed to be somewhere, maybe you’re a mom and just don’t have the time to focus for more than a few minutes…. In any event, you’re stepping out the door and don’t want to actually look like you just rolled your tired booty out of that warm, comfy bed.

This week for Makeup Wars we’re focusing on the 5 Minute Face.  Guaranteed to make you look presentable since 2013.

5 Minute FaceFor my 5 Minute Face I focus mostly on the eyes, because generally that’s what people see first.  You’ll also want to start with your eyes, just in case you need to clean anything up before you work on your face.  Who has time to redo the face?  Not me!

You really can’t go wrong with a basic eye palette.  I tend to always reach for Urban Decay Naked Basics when I’m on the run.  It’s got six fail-safe neutrals that you can quickly pop on the eye to open them up.

To amp up the basic eye I add on a brown, neutral liner like Urban Decay 24-7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Hustle.  These are great because you have time to smudge them a bit (so you don’t need to worry about that precise line) but they’ll also set and last all day long.

Finish up your eye look with 2 coats of mascara.  Lately I’ve been all over MAC In Extreme Dimension Lash (shown).  And, of course, brush on a clear brow gel.  One of my faves is NARS Oural Brow Gel.  You want clear just for grooming, as a tinted (unless your brows are thick and lovely) could get messy if you’re rushing.

Next reach for a powder foundation.  My absolute favorite is IT Cosmetics Celebration Foundation.  It buffs on easily, blends in perfectly and lasts all day long.  The coverage is superb and hides a multitude of sins.

Make your face come alive and your skin look glowy with a luminescent, pinky peach blush like Benefit Rockateur.  This is a “rose gold” cheek powder with understated shimmer that will wake you up and add much needed color to your face.

Finally, a glossy and sheer lip.  You don’t want to choose a lip product that takes any kind of time.  This means toss all things bright, deep and vampy out of your mind for this day.  Those colors take prep… precision… lip liners… they rely on the execution to look good.  Those are things we don’t have time for.  You want to literally be able to run out the door while applying this and know it looks okay without even checking a mirror.  One of my faves (shown) is Marc Jacobs Heart Shaped Lust For Lacquer Lip Vinyl.

Benefit WING WOMAN, JUICY DETAILS Hydra-Smooth Lip Color Swatches & Review

Benefit has done the impossible and released a very different style of lipstick, not so much formula wise… but definitely with the casing!  The Hydra-Smooth Lip Color formula is available in 10 shades.  A lot will seem similar while swatching on your hand, but there are different levels of coverage and finishes.  To start off with, I chose two shades in Wing Woman and Juicy Details.

Benefit WING WOMAN, JUICY DETAILS Hydra-Smooth Lip Color What Sephora says about Benefit Hydra-Smooth Lip Color:

What it is:
A fun and flattering lipstick enriched with shea, mango butter, and vitamin E.

What it does: Hydra-smooth lip color is enriched with shea, mango butter, and vitamin E for lips that look supple and hydrated. It glides on smoothly with a double-slanted tip that’s custom designed to define and fill for an irresistibly smooth finish. This collection was specially created to bring you the ten most universally flattering shades. They’re easy to pick and even easier to wear. Available in three levels of coverage: sheer, medium, and medium-full. What else you need to know: Tip: Keep color on your lips, not on your teeth by closing your lips around your finger, and then drawing your finger out to remove the excess.

IMG_6418 IMG_6421 IMG_6423 IMG_7685Using the lipstick in this casing is awkward at first.  It’ll take a few tries to really get the hang of it and feel comfortable.  The formula is buttery smooth and moisturizing, with the normal wear you’d receive from a lustre finish of lipstick (a few hours).  The lipstick twists up and you’ll want to watch how you apply to keep the slant in the correct shape, as it can very easily round out if you apply from the top (which is easier to do than you might think).

Wing Woman (peachy neutral) is very creamy and moisturizing.

IMG_7758Juicy Details (natural pink) has a high shine an a lot of moisture, with a very slight shimmer.

IMG_9814Have you tried the new Benefit Hydra-Smooth Lip Color?  What shade is your fave?

Benefit Hydra-Smooth Lip Color retails for $19.00 and is available at Sephora, Ulta and Macy’s.
