Not too long ago my brother-in-law got married. At the same time I was recovering from surgery so I wasn't exactly mobile. But, I have a now 7 year old little girl who has some seriously out of control hair and needed an updo. She hates when I brush it because it's always knotted (no matter how often we get at it) and it pulls/hurts her. That day she was being extra difficult and I just couldn't battle.... so, to do her hair, I did a topsy-tail.... but I kept topsy-ing and twisting... and the Topsy Twist Bun was born.

For this hairstyle you'll need the following: Goody Ouchless Girls Oval Brush, Goody Ouchless Elastics, bobby pins and hairspray.

The Goody Ouchless Girls Oval Brush is essential because the FlexGlide Bristles made it possible to brush my daughters hair entirely without her feeling any pain and without any fighting. The bristles are strong enough to get through all of the knots and mess but in a gentle way so as not to cause her any pain. (She actually said "WOW, mommy, I can't even feel this"). My girl is DRAMA. If she could feel it, I'd know about it. I wish I had this brush the countless times before when we did this style!

The Goody Ouchless Elastics give a comfortable and secure hold to your hairstyle and are completely void of that metal piece that snags in your hair causing you grief all day.

Now, it's likely that the Topsy Twist Bun already exists, all hair styles seem to at this point. This is just what I call it and it was discovered by me on accident. A parenting fail became a parenting win, if you will. Since that time this hairstyle has been a go-to for us on just about every occasion - fancy or not. I've gotten pretty good at it so I feel like I can give you some good tips on how to make it easier on you and your daughter.

Goody Ouchless Girls Oval Brush review

My daughters hair is fine, but thick. It's actually rather thin on top but thicker as it goes down. It's bizarre, to be sure, and also has an impossible cowlick at the back left crown area. Hairstyles ain't easy in this house. Hopefully the tutorial below will help you out, it's so easy you probably don't even need the pics, but they're there just in case. ;)

Topsy Twist Bun Hair Tutorial for kids girls

Tutorial:

  1. Begin by taking the Goody Ouchless Girls Oval Brush and brushing through the hair completely, making sure there are no knots. Since my daughters hair is fine and silky once it's brushed I spritz in some hairspray and brush that through as well.
  2. Choose one of your Goody Ouchless Elastics (I used a pink one for the tutorial because that's her preference). Unless your daughter has very thin and fine hair you won't be able to see the color of the elastic at the end, but Goody does offer Goody Ouchless Elastics in small, clear bands (shown in the main pic).
  3. Wrap the elastic around so it's in a low ponytail.
  4. Right above the elastic split the hair into equal halves.
  5. Take the ponytail upwards and slip it down through the center of the halves.
  6. Pull through so it looks like two separate twists.
  7. Repeat step 5 and 6.
  8. Tighten by pulling the long hair left on the ponytail apart.
  9. Keep flipping what you have left on the ponytail through the center of the halves (step 5) until there is no hair left. You may still have random strands sticking up, but that's okay. See step 10! ;)
  10. Secure with bobby pins and spray again with the hair spray. I don't have any actual tips on where to place the pins, but I do them all over and I make sure if any hair has escaped that they're placed in the bun securely.
