You may have heard or seen the name Helmut Newton if you’re a fan of fashion or are one to casually flip through the pages of Vogue or Vanity Fair. If not, know that he’s a legendary photographer known for his “precise, glamorous and empowering photography of women”.
For their latest collab MAC Cosmetics has chosen to celebrate this esteemed artist with a small collection of limited edition products that focus on his exquisite taste and signature aesthetic.
The outer packaging features a selection of Newton’s most iconic photographs. The makeup products themselves are housed in the usual packaging known for MAC Cosmetics.
Point ‘n’ Shoot Eyeshadow Quad ($32.00 // MAC). The eye shadow shades in this palette are Real Fantasy (soft eggshell, matte), Hard Currency (grey, matte), Influential (brown, satin) and Point ‘n’ Shoot (black, matte).
I’m always happy to see a quad that can make for an easy smokey eye. The shades are obviously going to be dupeable but if you’re looking for these colors then it’s something you’d enjoy. Three of the four matte shades were impressive… smooth, buttery and easy to blend. The fourth shade, Point ‘n’ Shoot, was not. It’s a matte black that gives practically zero color payoff, is dry and chalky. The swatch of it made me not even want to post the swatch pics. You guys know Carbon? If you dislike Carbon, you’ll absolutely dislike Point ‘n’ Shoot. It does, however, work well when used wet for a liner (like Carbon). So, the entire quad is usable in some way – but I wouldn’t plan on using Point ‘n’ Shoot as a shadow.
Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour ($21.00 // MAC). Three Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour shades are available in Chateau M (deep red wine), High Heels (red) and Self Portrait (dark plum).
I found the formula of these Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour shades to be consistent with the other three I’ve tried (see review here) and think they’re perfectly in line with the theme of the collection and the season. Definitely the stand-outs.
Also included in this collection are three Nail Lacquers in Call Time, Berlin and Monte Carlo, Upward Lash Mascara in Upward Black and Liquid Eyeliner in Boot Black.
The collection as a whole isn’t particularly unique as far as color choices but if you’re a fan of MAC, fashion, art and/or Helmut Newton it’s worth picking up at least one piece! I would recommend one of the Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colours – my favorite is Chateau M.
The MAC Cosmetics x Helmut Newton Collection is currently available online at maccosmetics.com and will be available in store (at select locations) beginning November 3, 2016.
