There’s always at least one colorful Dior 5-Couleurs eye palette in their Summer collection and for 2015 that one is 556 Contraste Horizon($62.00 // Nordstrom). It’s a subdued sort of colorful – that kind that even the most timid can wear.
Packaging wise you’ll notice it’s housed in the same deep navy casing and velveteen pouch that Dior 5-Couleurs come in.
When you open the compact the five eye shadow shades are covered with plastic and sided with two double-ended makeup applicators. On the opposite side of the shadows is a full mirror.
The five eye shadow shades in Contraste Horizon are an icy mint green, a light sandy gold frost, a shimmery blue-green pearl, a chocolate bronze and a matte white. I found that all of the shades worked well together and blended nicely. The chocolate and blue-green are the most pigmented and while the gold and mint have a nice color payoff there is still a sheerness to them. I was impressed the white matte shade applied so evenly, not chalky at all and added just enough under my brow bone. When worn over a primer these shades lasted all day on my lids.
The swatches below are done dry, on bare skin with no primer underneath.
In the eye look below I began by using MAC Utterly Becoming Pro Longwear Paint Pot for a base. First I applied the icy mint shade (top left) all over the lid. Next I took the chocolate bronze shade (bottom right) and applied that on the lid (leaving the inner corner open so the mint shows), blending upward through and above the crease. Next I patted the light sandy gold shade (top right) all over the center of the lid. To deepen the crease I applied more of the bronze chocolate and blended the light sandy gold shade at the top of that to fade it out a bit. The matte white shade (middle) was used to highlight under the brow and blended down toward the gold shades to make it all seamless. A bit of the blue-green shade (bottom left) is smudged under the lower lash line. The top eye liner is Chanel Brun Liquid Eyeliner and the bottom is Urban Decay Stag 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil. The mascara is NARS Audacious on top and Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara on the bottom.
Of the two Dior 5-Couleurs released for Summer 2015 Ambre Nuit is my favorite. It might even be one of my top 5 palettes of the year. Contraste Horizon is clearly beautiful, but if you just want one… go for Ambre Nuit. (Note: Ambre Nuit is permanent, while Contraste Horizon is limited edition. If you’re wanting both, buy Contraste Horizon first!).
