The theme for the September 2014 Birchbox is Fresh Paint which is celebrating the transition from Summer to Fall. This was an anniversary month (4 years!) for Birchbox, so I definitely was expecting something exciting… however this month was a total let down. The brands/products are okay, but I’m disappointed that Birchbox has been so skincare heavy lately. I get including one or two, but the boxes are always loaded with them. Being that other subscription services that are the same price and aren’t as skincare heavy, I feel like there’s no excuse. Anyway, all whining aside, here is the review…
As you open the box the card resting on top gives you a little explanation and greeting on one side and a run down of what is in your box on the other side. Note with the skincare products I won’t be able to actually review, because in order to have an accurate review of skincare you need to test for 4-6 weeks and with the sample sizes that just isn’t possible.
From Acure Organics, Day Cream. This day cream is anti-aging for firming and protecting the skin. This cream smooths on easily and smells like orange peels, but not in a gross way. If you love oranges (I do) you’re going to love the scent. My skin felt smooth after application and I am happy to note is absorbed quickly.
From Caudalie, Vinoperfect Radiance Serum. This serum is thankfully oil-free and rich in anti-oxidants set to fade dark spots and even skin tone. I thought this serum felt nice and absorbed quickly, though I barely got to test it because the sample size was laughably small.
From Davines, Oi Conditioner. This conditioner is touted as a detangler that will protect and soften the hair. TBH I didn’t even try it because it’s really, really fragrant and even sniffing it gave me a major headache. It’s a very heady scent, so if you’re into that you might want to check it out. The size given was very generous and there were even extra packets of shampoo and oil to test along with it. I don’t mind small samples or packets when they’re just “extras” 😉
From Rituals, Zensation Shower Foam. This shower gel gives off a nice lather and is fragrant but note that you only need a very little amount. It dispenses out like hair mousse and a very little bit expands in size. A little goes a very long way!
From TEMPTU, S/B Highlighter in Champagne Shimmer. I’m such a fan of TEMPTU products so even though this was one of the tiniest samples I was excited to try it. It gave off a really nice illuminating look to my cheeks that lasted all day.
This month’s shipment was pretty much the pits. Birchbox had a few good months there after a really horrible run but with last month being so skincare heavy I really expected this month to make up for that. Instead it’s even more skincare heavy. To me, this was not worth $10.00. At all. I’m truly disappointed and hope that for October they can pick things up.
